Hi, if you are near a Walmart check out their selection or visit walmart.com
I bought my Toshiba laptop there 2 years ago the price was 420.00 including tax. I believe you can fine one cheaper since some time has passed. I use the computer for surfing, download music, stream movies and work related projects. This computer has stood the test of time and pretty fast.
Good Luck on your search...

Hi,
I am from Malaysia and here I am using the brand Fujitsu. It is around $850 when I first bought it but now it is available for $500 each. The quality is superb, and I can watch movies without any problems. It is high in speed and there's no need to wait. Actually the speed depends very much on which level of broadband connection to are subscribing to. The more expensive subscriptions will usually give you speedier browsing and downloading/uploading experience.
I hope this helps you a bit. Good luck in finding the best computer!

If you surf microcenter or fry's electronic websites, they provide pretty good deal on the acer laptop, they can be cheaper than $300 and have pretty decent system that you are looking for. In best buy, you won't find much of the deal, but you can wait until the holiday come closer, you might find some good deal out of their laptop section.

Yes, you can get a laptop at that price nowadays. You mentioned that you are not going for high tech laptop, so most laptop out there will be able to be your options. You can start going to computer stores and look at HP, dell and asus laptops. You can get some which suited your criteria between $400 to $600. Acer can be cheaper than those but It has been reported to have a lot of problems.
Currently I'm using Dell 14 inch. I've been using it for 3 years and everything still run fine. Of course it is not for high end gaming. I plan to buy a new Dell in a few months to come. But generally, Dell's laptop has better quality which they don't break often. You can try and search in dell website for home user laptop, look at the studio and xps series. Dell has a comprehensive website which allows you to custom your laptop and order online.
