Made in America!!

Have you thought about it? Are the products you are buying made in America or China or Malaysia? If we think to look and make sure we are buying products that are made here we could be giving a person a job! Where if we buy a product made in China or Malaysia or whatever then we aren't helping our own Americans to keep their jobs. What are your thoughts on this subject?

I think it's really important to source local stuff whenever we can find and afford it. I know here in UK we've lost masses of industry because it's been cheaper for companies to buy in manufactured goods from abroad but it's so sad that we are unable to look after our own workers.

It is has become epidemic here there is so little made here anymore. It has caused hardships in many communities especially ones that were heavy employers at one time of manufacturing. Now everything is either service or heathcare sector jobs and those don't pay much and they can get rid of you for someone cheaper at the snap of their fingers.

Hard to find the answer. I think if we all try to buy some of our locals products we are helping atleast.

not sure what the answer is to be honest 3snugglebunnies but I think GardenGerty has some really good suggestions and we try hard to source local stuff when we can find (and afford) it. Every little has to help though it can be tough these days to stick by our principles sometimes :(

There ought to be a movement, but it needs leaders. Any volunteers?

That's true alot of times there are no options to buy American for certain things.

I have heard this really promoted this year especially and it is a valid premise. I have also heard it said that one of the few ways to make sure our money is helping our economy is to spend it on local businesses. The mom and pop diner, the corner grocery store. Give gift certificates for auto detailing or a massage, or a hair cut or a subscription to the local paper.

Very good ideas Gerty! True that services by local businesses may be better in the long run than finding products made here.

I would think that products made out of the US might be cheaper.

I've been saying this for years. Buy American to keep American's working. Only problem is not enough is made here any more and if it is people have to shop by price American always costs more provided you can find it.

And of course the stores get a higher profit margin from something imported from Asia rather than made here.

I heard about people against outsourcing, since our jobs are transfer to other countries in term of cheaper labor. But we still have to work harder to bring our economy back up. I hope that we can balance the domestic jobs and outsourcing. Since we really need our jobs here, and also we have to keep the balance of importing and exporting.

I would agree on the balanceing, however I'd prefer if it leaned more in our favor. Darn us for wanting benifits and good wages.

Balance is good. Everyone in all areas has to make alittle money.

I try so hard just to buy american made but guess what? hardly anything is made here any more and the ones that are is more expensive because of our crappy economy. so its kind of a catch 22. you know? a rock and a hard place.

I agree. Something needs to be done. We need to try to buy Made in America if at all possible though.

I have thought about it before and we have become a "buyers" country versus a producer. I think that it got out of hand a long time ago and now, even if it say s made in America chances are that it isn't. I would love to see America become more productive and I would support it for sure.

It would be nice to see more products made in America as opposed to having them made all over the world. I know a lot of the things I have are not made in America. Most of my electronics are from somewhere in Asia (at this point, I don't even see made in Japan on my stuff). Most of my art supplies are stamped from somewhere in Europe (most of it is German). Speaking of Germany, they take pride in their country and do things to protect that pride. This is why they are such a big exporter of products, and their economy is weathering it out with the problems with the Euro. Our companies don't have that kind of pride here as Germany, which is sad that they put profit over everything else. We probably wouldn't have this recession if the companies were so greedy as to find the places to build stuff for cheap. I wouldn't mind paying a higher price if it meant that the product was built here.

Yup! We buy American products! Our dollar is up over parity against yours, so we're investing in "Brand America" as fast as we can make the money to buy it. It's much cheaper for us consumers to buy online than it is in any of our retail stores, so our whole retail sector is going down the gurgler! I can't wait to see that vacuum line (like they have in supermarkets) to be built from here to the USA to reduce freight costs & increase delivery speed! They can run it off those New Zealand volcanos! Our company buys a fair bit of American equipment & technology. I've personally invested heaps in that area over the past year from the USA. Okay, in all seriousness, I do support locally made for both economic & environmental reasons. Food miles are becoming a big issue nowadays too. I wish the government could fund the "Buy Australian Made" organization which has been around for decades already.
