Is homelessness a choice?

I think it's complicated. I think that homelessness can result from personal choices that have gone wrong. I also think that some people just have had some bad circumstances with no fault of their own. And, I think some people are homeless because they're incapable for making a living for themselves. But, I have actually talked to some people who say that they chose to be homeless!
What do you think?

I think most people end up in such a position through bad choices or bad circumstances but, more and more, there is an ever growing percentage of people who actually seem to want to wallow in the "victim" role. More and more we have a growing group who refuse to take any personal responsibility for their own lives and situations and habitually look for a person, or an entity they can blame all their difficulties on.

That is so true! Look at all the people who sue because they tripped over their own children in a furniture store. Or, spilled hot coffee over their lap because they didn't want to put it in a cup holder or wait until it cooled.
I wonder what is causing that attitude or what can be done about it.

I agree with you and then i don't! because most of the time it is a choice, because people do make stupid mistakes and loose what they didn't relize that they had! but then again sometimes it's not because some people didn't have anything to start with and then are left out on the streets!

That's a really good answer! Yes, some people don't have much to begin with. I have also seen it when children are kicked out of their homes.

Thanks for answering. I assume you mean "mental illness". If I am wrong, please correct me.

i agree with imabagel...everybody hits rock bottom at some point in there life and you have to WORK your way back to the top not beg from others...but i also agree that some people have illness that prevent them from working, but there are ways of making money. and i dont think begging for it is right.but then im one of those people that give them a dollar when i walk by but i always say in my head mcdonalds is always hiring!

Thanks.
Though, I have to say, that I've tried to get some of those jobs like working at McDonalds and I couldn't get hired! They're not always easy to get.

Thanks for answering. It's true, the ones who really don't want to be homeless at least try to work on their situations. But, I think that some people are incapable of doing that because of mental illnesses.
