Pennies in a jar.

Do you save pennies or other loose change in a jar or tin and then bank it when either the jar is full or you have enough to bag and take to the bank? I've got a couple of old pickle jars one for silver and one for copper and I manage to save a fair bit this way. How about you?

I have done this at different times. I let my change purse get full and then I roll the coins and bank it. The bank has become weird about doing this. They don't seem to want to give me coin wrappers and so I don't usually do it. I think they don't want to deal with the change. And maybe they don't trust that the wrapper has all coins in it.

In the UK only new coins are rolled. Otherwise they are bagged in clear plastic bags and weighed when you take them to the bank or post office. Most banks have a limit on how many bags they will take per customer per day (except business customers who are paying a charge anyway). My own bank allows you to deposit five bags per day and as I rarely let the collection build up too much it is unlikely I'd have more than five.

Unless I am completely broke I never spend my change, until its time to take the kids on a vacation. Then I gather the coins and cash them in. The vacations are always close to home, but there always seem to be enough for us to go away for 3-4 days and to hit the amusement park for a day or two. Since there are five in my family. I figure with spare change being able to take a vacation even if it is a small one isn't bad at all.

This is how we get our 4 year old daughter to save...my hubby doesn't like carrying change so he gives it to her to put in her 4 money boxes...once there is enough to fill the coin bags you get from the bank, she gets to put it in her own bank account. My friend has quite a few hundred dollars in coins bagged up for the bank & another few hundred to bag up

Don't have pickles jars, but two small banks that my husband and I use. It's a good way to save up money. My Dad used to use an old lamp base (the kind you could fill up with shells or other decorative things) for a bank. Man, could he save up the money!!

Hi hvedra: I remembered I used to do this and it actually works because you are more aware about the money you are saving. I am not saving pennies right now but I make plans to control the money I earn and to focus on the things I need and also to save a good percentage of my own money. ALVARO

Well, I think that people should save any and all change that they have in general and not just pennies. Yes, I know that pennies are more expensive to make now, and that they have a different sound from pennies that were made before the new ones came in, but the fact is save them until you have enough to cash them in. Also, this still baffles me because I really don't know of anything that truly cost a penny anymore, and I am beginning to wonder why we still have it around? I am wondering if it will go the way of the half-penny?

I save all my change. I have it an old margarine container. When i feel it is full enough I take it to the bank and have it counted out. I usually put in my Christmas Club account. It is one fo the few ways I can save money! I am trying to save some paper money in a old olive jar for something in the future. It is growing slowly! I hope never to use it except for what I plan to use it for!

When I was a kid, I used to put coin that had been given or encountered to the jar. My parents cut down bamboo and put a hole the same size as coin. So, I can save every penny I found and put into it. My sister did also saving their penny at different bamboo.

We have a shop here who loves the pennies so I save it for them (it cost them money to change at the bank). for the rest I save small coins if I go on holiday. I don't miss them that much (well most of the time) and this way my holidays (or times in need) are less expensive/problematic

I do collect my change in a jar. Then, every so often, when money gets really tight, I take it to the bank and get cash. I used to roll all of my change, but now I am lazy. My credit union (bank) has a change counter and they keep 3% for their fee. Change counters in Wal-mart and such places charge more like 8 or 9%. Recently I read an article about people who collect pennies for the copper. Older pennies (I think before 1982) are like 95% copper and worth much more than a penny now. However, until the U.S. Congress passes a law, it is still illegal to be melting down those pennies.

My dad did this for a while. He put all his spare change in a novelty bank my sister got him one year. Eventually he took it to the bank and it ended up being 220 dollars.

i started a jar for my daughter when she was born. she generally gets all the pennies in the houe, found in the laundry, pennies found on the sidewalk... etc. in the course of her 11 years.. she has banked near $1000 in change. that lil ball canning jar has come in quite useful towards her college education =o)

Yep, my husband & I do this as well. One time we saved like $64. Now every time we have loose change, even if it's only a few pennies we throw it in this little plastic piggy bank our bank gave us years ago. When it's full, we dump them out, roll them up & deposit it in our bank account.

I still put pennies in jar or tin.I hope I have more this year if I open it and change to bill.Sometimes it helps in some little ways especially in time of difficulties. And is one way to save money even in small way.I will continue doing this no matter what.
