I agree Tolkien was a genius. If you haven't already you should ofcourse read The Lord of The Rings trilogy :)

Tolkien is one of my favourite fantasy authors, I much more prefer the books to the movies (though I must admit I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming movie version of the Hobbit!) and I'm glad to see you've started reading his books in the correct order! After the Hobbit I would advise you to read The Fellowship of the Ring, then The Two Towers, then The Return of the King and lastly The Silmarillion if you are still interested in the starting lore of Middle-earth. To my shame I've never been able to finish The Silmarillion as it's quite dense in information and it mentions a lot of names and characters not mentioned in LotR or the Hobbit.

Tolkien set a number of his works in the fictional mythology of "Middle Earth",some of which were stories, others were reference and background material supporting the others..the best known of these (and recently filmed) have been "The Hobbit" and the 3 books known as "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy.."Fellowship of the Ring","The Two Towers" ,and "Return of the King".
These 4 books can be read in that order (recommended!) as "The Hobbit" tells the story of Bilbo Baggins going on an adventure with Gandalf, while the "Trilogy",written as a sequel, references events and Characters from the earlier book with Bilbo, having lived a long life, yearning to have another trip out into the world, while his Nephew and Heir,Frodo, goes off with Gandalf on another Adventure..Another work,"The Silmarillion" gives more background on the world and it's History, but is for more in depth study,IMO.
