Because my daughter is sick and suffers severe coughing, we went to her pedia last week and the other day.We are thought to "not give calamansi and other citrus fruits" to her,to our surprise.
All my life, i always drink and eat citrus fruits and juice whenever i have cough. That is why i always give my daughter citrus fruits to eat whenever she have cough too.Only to be thought that it is a "BIG NO-NO"
Doctor said, having citrus fruits triggers asthma and cause itchiness to throat. That is why it should not be given to person with cough.
Weird right? What do you think about it?

I was given that too when I was young. So that may be the reason my cough took long weeks before it goes away. Severe cough that won't let me sleep well, they even though I've got asthma.
Thankfully I won't have to use that in case one of my brothers (or me ) wlhave babies in the future.

but the question is how did you prepare the calamansi juice?...It must have served as hot calamansi juice rather than cold...:) It really helps to relieve the cough..maybe its luke warm or cold when you drink it..of course it will take a week to recover you cough..:)

It was hot and they squeezed it, put it in a spoon and made me drink it like a cough syrup. In my case it's not just A week. Until now I had to buy 3 bottles of cough syrup until my cough goes. How's one month of having cough?

That is not weird. Citrus and fiber are no for many other disorders and ailments, simply because of some reasons or the other. I have been suffering from Ulcerative Colitis and both are NO for me too. It is kind of like what your body needs and what your metabolism can handle. Things that work right for someone may not work the same for the other.
Would you believe that I have been asked not to take Apples, Bananas and Papayas? These papayas are supposed to be the best ones for any digestive disorder and my late granny used to take one daily as she was suffering from Piles.

Papaya is one of the best fruit to eat on digestive disorders... one that I usually eat also. Maybe because of your UC that's why they asked you to stop taking those fruits. Did she explain to you why you can't eat those?

Good thing is, only 3 fruits won't be good for you to take. There are still lots of fruits you can eat.

Sorry to know that your daughter is suffering from asthma attack.
Yes, calamansi(lime) and mangoes are not advisable for asthmatic people my dear.
The fiber will trigger the itchiness indeed and made the situation worse.
I advise you to give her coffee without creamer when the attack is so bad- the caffeine will help her to boost the histamine.
My niece and nephew's suffering same condition and I know how hard it is when asthma attack :(
Hope and pray for your daughter's recover soon

Wow I never knew either that calamansi is not good for cough and cold. I've always thought since this is rich in vitamin C, then it should be good to cure cough and cold. Oh well, maybe we ought to ask another doctor's opinion or search for it on the internet. Maybe we'll be enlighten in this issue

In some cases its really big NO.. all fruits have their disadvantages and when its too much it is also not goo in our body. In your case, the doctor might not let your child take it because of some reasons which the doctor only knew or might have some problems could occur, because prevention is better than cure.. To avoid confusions, CALAMANSI is a very good source of vitamin C but not for kids who is suffering for asthma, throat problems as well as cough because they cannot tolerate from it, and their system is still immature..:)

I don't also agree to that "calamansi- big no-no!" all because I do have an asthma that has run in our family for year and was passed on to me. And every time that I do have colds and cough I do drink pure calamansi juice without any sugar because it's a big source of vitamin C for our immune system and in such manner, I will feel better after 3 days of continuous drinking of that natural juice without even taking any medicine for my asthma. Actually, before, whenever i caught a common colds it will eventually be a big reason why I will have an asthma attack, but thanks to God, until now, I don't have any attack for more than a year. I think it's just a matter of taking good care of your self and of the children who do have such ailments if it's not as severe as an asthma can be.

I just read some article that we must be careful on what food we are eating if we're taking vit c... citrus fruits are full of vit. c... and for some reasons it turns food in toxic and can poison us esp. eating shrimp and prawns after taking vit c. and if we are not careful enough it might cause worst effect on our health... you suppose to take the doctor's advice... rather than to risk for your daughter's health... I declare healing for her right now.. In Jesus name!.. God bless you.

I dont know about that doctor except maybe hes trying to gain more business. Anyway the thing i know about colds is they need vitiman C. I have some books about foods and cures, etc. in them i have learned that mangos have more vit C than all of the fruits and veggies around. Once when my daughter was still a baby i was waiting to see the doc i overheard the medical staff say that when they feel they are coming down with something the take alot of vit C. Ever since tehn ive done the same thing. I havent been sick for along time.

This is one reason that I don't put total trust or confidence in Doctors. For centuries what is one day considered proper treatment is later found to be improper. The same goes for what we eat. we are constantly hearing changes in what is right or wrong to eat. One day something is healthy for us and the next it is harmful. It can be confusing.
I have been lucky because for some reason when my body needs something I will start to crave a specific food that somehow has the proper substance I need. For instance if my protein level is low I might start to crave fish or meat. I know this sound silly but some people are attuned to their body's needs and it communicates with you by the type of cravings you have.
I have had ulcers and probably still do to a small extent but I have learned on my own the types of food that will upset them. To my surprise spicy foods are not too bad for me. I think too much spicy foods can upset anyone's stomach but what really gets my ulcers upset is a mountain dew. I can drink all other sodas but if I drink a mountain dew it will upset my ulcer.
I don't know what calamansi is but I have always been taught to drink plenty of fluids when sick. Things such as tomato juice, orange juice, apple juice, cranberry juice, etc. I always like to get second opinions from doctors until I find a really good one that understands me and my specific problems. I now have a great family doctor that listens to me and even takes my suggestions under advisement even though he may not always agree. After all he is the doctor, but it is important that you find a doctor that understands your particular body and system and takes the time to really help you. A lot of doctors these days just want to rush you through without really listening.
I am not saying your doctor is wrong, calamansi might be bad for you. It surely won't hurt to try his advice and see if it helps any better. If not you can always go back to giving the citrus fruit. Citrus fruits do however contain certain acidic qualities but I think apple juice is calming.
If I get a bad cough I myself use cough lozenges and I also drink fluids because it helps ease the sore throat that can come with a cough sometimes. Drinking fluid when sick has always been a common thing to treat with along with the other medicine like antibiotics and cough syrup.

Yes, I do drink pure calamansi juice whenever I have severe cough too. I learned that from my brother.Whenever he had a cough he broil the fruit and once heated, juiced it and drink it directly. I guess it helps but for me sometimes it does too.
Well, we can not question what the Doctor says because it's their job to know what is best. Maybe being a child your Pedia thought that it could trigger more once her throat becomes itchy because of it's acidity.

for me i loved to drink calamansi juice every time i feel that i will have cough or even cold or runny nose,i don;t want to have cough or cold because its hard to move and enjoy my day,and aside from that its not good when you are working or when you are go to school.

That is something new for me. Maybe the Doctor have basis for it, that citrus fruits can exacerbate coughing or asthma. I would make a research about it. When I have colds, I will start to take vitamin C tablets and I think it helps my immune system.

That's true.Although citrus fruits contain vitamin c which is good to fighting cold,it also causes irritation of the throat or lungs.
It has vitamin c but causes irritation so a person who is suffering from cough must not take it...

Every time I have cough. I buy calamansi juice. For me, this is my remedy. I know it can cause itchiness in the throat but I really don't bother it.

I know that eating and orange can cause your throat to get very flemy. So I would think other citrus fruits would do the same.
Since she is already having a lot of problems with her cough, I would agree with the doctor to stay away from citrus fruits when one has a cold.
It is interesting the different things we find out when we get older. The things that helped us when we were younger may not be what we need to give our children now a days.

the main reason why people eat kalamansi or other citrus fruits is the vitamin c. citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C which is good when you have a cough or common cold. but what i know before, sour fruits such as calamansi might irritate your throat more when you are coughing because its too acidic.
when having a cought you can opt for other fruits that are rich in citamin C like guava.

In some cases, citrus fruits are bad, but the tried and tested cure for cough is lemon and honey.

I agree with that. Citrus fruits can actually irritate our throats which will exacerbate cough and asthma conditions.
