Is there such thing as a STABLE JOB today?

Me and fiancee came from the same company and we decided to resigned from work since I got sick while a problem occurred on their department that led to a few non-working days. Some of our relatives and friends questioned our decision on resigning and they told us that its still best to have a job with monthly income than doing freelancing.
But we explained to them that nothing is permanent and there's no stable job. Even if we have an 8 hour job still there's a possibility that we'll get laid off one way or another.
We have a lot of responsibilities and right now we are paying for our house, our relatives and friends are very concerned about how we can manage but right now we know in our hearts that we can make it by doing freelancing.
I've got a job right now at home and I have time to do things I can't do while working in an office. This goes the same with my fiancee. If I'll be asked if there's a stable job right now, what I can answer is there's none.
We have to live one day at a time. Save as much as possible from the money you are getting and spend wisely. There's a lot of people I know who managed their money well and is now living well. Not very rich but is in a better position.
Jobs may come and go. Its how you save and spend in your life that will matter when you are going to retire.
What about you guys? Do you think there's such thing as a stable job?

looking after horses is a time consuming job has the need a lot of grooming to keep them in top condition, especialy horses has the use a lot of energy when racing. So you could say there will always be a STABLE job for those who work in that industry.
Have a great day from Deeeky

There's nothing known as stable life, much lesser a stable job. Companies are only out for profits and how matter how valuable we are to the company now, when crunch time hits, valuable employees are the first to be hit with retrenchment due to high salaries. After all, that's the purpose in working right, to have high salary and career advancement. In my opinion, the most stable job today is to stay home, be a home maker.

Hello... I don't think there's anything like 'stable job' these days. It keeps changing... In hot fields, people change jobs when other company offer better package.. That's how it is in my field too...
We are after a good package not a stable job, these days...

Sad to say it seems there are no stable jobs today. Actually today the job market is very competitive. Even if you are a good employee, but one day you may leave since there are new employees join in the company. They are younger, much more energetic and less salaries. So sometimes the employers will choose them.

Though I really don't feel like there is any such thing as a job that will be stable forever, I do feel that there are certain benefits to working for a company where you are paid a set wage and you know that you have work to do from one day to the next day.
With that said, I think that working as a freelancer has its fair share of benefits if it is possible for you to go without money when the work is short.

I don't think there is such a thing as a 'stable job'!
That's why I keep looking around. Even though I currently have a job, I continue sending out my resumes, and going for interviews.
After the first day of a new job, I would always go home and update my resume, and start sending it out again.
I think that I should continue doing this until the day I finally decide to retire.

I think we have very few really stable jobs for a few people. We can never foretell the future of any company and of the workers. People change, the economy changes, etc. We just have to do everything to help out in the house and be productive to the community as well.

I agree that there was not a stable job. The job may come and go. I would say for us Indonesia my job is quite good one. I earned a little higher than standard minimum region salary here, but I did not spend my money wisely and didn't save as well. I almost spent all my money to fulfill my pleasure needs than spending them in save place or bank. I didn't even realize what I was worked for. The stable job can not guarantee us from financial problem or loss if we didn't save a bit. I knew the job coming and going, it didn't really help us right if we didn't help ourselves as well.

A job is never stable they can always kick you out.
I don't think there will be much people get a contract for 6 months or longer now a days. Also you have a test period if you start (can be 3 months). Your responsibilities (paying your bill) is not the same as the responsibilities of a company (not to be stucked to an employee in times of need).

I'm prompted to make a detailed comment since I can relate very much with this issue right now.
Around 2006, when I quit my long years from a semi government job and met the MD of a closely held Company which I was joining if I could count on a long term job guarantee with him, he [wise man] thoughtfully told me why was I asking that question. For, he said first of all did I visualize myself working long term with them. He meant I could be moving out in a few years landing an even better job. Having moved from a government job, my confidence was not great and it's full import didn't sink in. Precisely 2.5 years later, I was offered a lucrative job and I left that Company!
There was another bit of advice the MD of the first Company had given me. He had said conventional parental anxiety about job security always dictates that only government jobs are secure jobs. He said if people are contented getting one fourth of what they would otherwise paid [if they deserved, that is] by private owners & if they considered that is what security is all in their perception, he said he would very happily provide secure jobs at those lowly salaries for hundreds of people.
But right now, I have come a long way and as you say, I shouldn't really be worried if I had to quit and freelance. Because, my Company is moving me to a very far off division and I tend to think whether it is not possible for me to stay put where I am right now by declining the transfer. And if they said no, I would quit. But as you have brought it up, my people tend to talk about the stable job and are not too excited about the prospect of me earning by freelancing. I can easily overlook their anxiety and take the plunge. But some conservative families cannot reconcile and digest the thought. So, for now, I have decide to give the whole thought a little more space while continuing to build my online profile through select jobs. And once I can prove to them that there really is money earned, I'm sure they would shed the anxiety easily.

I am afraid there is no such thing as a stable job today. The manager or the owner of the business you are working for today, can fire and hire anybody anytime. I guess that if you own a business, you might consider your job as stable. But for a variety of reasons, many businesses go bankrupt. This is the reality we are facing today. While at work, endeavor to pay yourself first at least 40% of your salary every payday, save it towards investment purpose at a future date. This is also money you can fall back on when you are out of work.

I don't think there is such a thing as a stable job, or job security. There is always someone else that can do what you do, faster or better. I don't mean that to be discouraging. I think you should always do the very best that you can do in your profession. Always strive to learn everything you can, and diversify your knowledge. Know more that one skill or task. That way if the unthinkable ever does happen and you do somehow lose your job, you are more prepared and apt to find another job quickly. Reducing needless spending is always a good idea. If you can, put away a savings so that if things do take a turn for the worse, you have something to fall back on while you are looking for another job. If you can, supplement your income as much as possible. You could do the freelancing (in the evenings) as a supplement to a full time position (during the day). This would be a good way to become more financially stable.

I don't think their is a stable job. All business always have a percentage to go bankrupt. Even if the best people are hired to do the job or even if everything is being closely monitored, we just can't predict the market. It's the buyers/consumers who dictates the market, not the business. Companies need to be competitive in order to survive the market war.
