i don't quite understand what you mean.
smart and clever are the same things. as far as i'm concerned.
some people would say that smart refers to intelligence but clever could be quick witted as in sense of humour etc.
if someone has told you you are not smart, first of all, they are rude and i wonder why your friend would make such a horrible remark toward you? but to say someone is not smart doesn't mean they are stupid as such, it just seems to question your intelligence.

I think that the term smart is used in a lot of different contexts in this day and age. Some of these contexts are the right context and some of them are the wrong context.
The actual definition of smart is:
1.
a. Characterized by sharp quick thought; bright. See Synonyms at intelligent.
b. Amusingly clever; witty: a smart quip; a lively, smart conversation.
c. Impertinent; insolent: That's enough of your smart talk.
2. Energetic or quick in movement: a smart pace.
3. Canny and shrewd in dealings with others: a smart negotiator.
4. Fashionable; elegant: a smart suit; a smart restaurant; the smart set. See Synonyms at fashionable.
5.
a. Capable of making adjustments that resemble human decisions, especially in response to changing circumstances: smart missiles.
b. Manufactured to regulate the amount of light transmitted in response to varying light conditions or to an electronic sensor or control unit: smart windows.
However, there are times that people will use smart when talking about decisions and such that they make in their lives.

Depends. Were you sticking a fork in an electric outlet when your friend said this to you?

i thnk we should differ smart and genious. some kdis are genious at academic or having good cognitive, but they are not smart enough to use their skill or knowldedge to solve problem or to make some thing usefull in their life. we call it iq and eq. i think you should read about 8 multiple inteleginies by howard gardner. it is so inspriing

Not smart does not mean that you are moron or stupid. It only means that your not taking a better decision. It could means that you lack some knowledge about something. Your knowledge might not be broad enough to be define as smart.
