When does being a "fan" of a celebrity become scary?

I am a dedicated fan of a particular artist and happen to be a fan club member. I've never been a member of anyone's club; not even when I was a teenager. I just happen to love everything this artist does and also feel he/she stands for in terms of being a humanitarian, etc.
I don't go on the message boards too often, but when I do, I am constantly amazed at some of the things that are said. Grown people attacking each other over what they THINK they know about this artist. It's just kind of spooky. I'm sure that this isn't uncommon or specific to this particular celebrity, but it still always shocks me. It makes me wonder what that celebrity is thinking while reading some of the things people are talking about.
Have you experienced this type of behavior before and should I be as surprised as I am?

I have seen such behavior and it is indeed scary. This is what gives rise to stalker tendencies. Like this guy in my college who likes this particular actress. His phone is full of pictures of her, he adds every girl named after that actress. It is SCARY!!!

You have to wonder what being a celebrity would be like. Worrying about being followed, your home address found, dangers to your family. I'm not sure if it would be worth it. Maybe the good outweighs the bad????
