The sweet, tart juicy pineapple story

I've been eating more pineapple this year. I enjoy mine sliced. My husband showed me how to slice it in half and scrape the flesh from the bowl like shape. When I go shopping the price of a pineapple is usually around 4.50 each on sale 2.50 each. All of the pineapple consumption got me asking how are pineaples made. I researched on the internet, of course. Here are some interesting facts! The pineapple needs temperatur of 73 and 86 degree farenheit to grow and full sun. It takes 7 months to produce a little reddish, purple flower. At first bloom farmers spray the flower with a natural gas called ethalyn. Ethalyn allows the bulb to grow. The stem thickens and becomes bulbus (pineapple). Five months after first bloom the pineapple is ready for picking. Pineapples go through a ten step cleaning process. Frogs like to lay there eggs in the pineapples crown.

I didn´t know it took so long and was so difficult to grow a single pineapple. It´s amazing how they can be so chep, when they should be more expensive. Today I went to the super and pineapples were cheaper than the fruit we grow in our own country. I thought it was a shame! I decided to buy some oranges that were at a reasonable price and take my vitamins and minerals through veggies until prices got more reasonable. Next time. I will buy a pineapple. Now I cannot eat it as it has too much fiber.

Such an exquisite piece of fruit. I always thought 5.00 was too much for the fruit. Now that I understand the labor involved and climate needs, I promise not to haggle over price anymore.

I agree. It used to be more expensive in my country, as we don´t grow it. But now fruits come and go throughout the world and I can see that our native fruit is more expensive than imported ones.

I don't know what country your referring to. In the US it seems all the produce is expensive especially the organic kind. I'm not sure of what percentage are imports or domestic.

I want to move to Hawaii, and be with the pineapples. Is there a sweeter, juicier fruit? Oh my goodness, it's just the best!! Pineapple is expensive, but I love it so much. Wow! It takes a long time for pineapple to ripen, but it's definitely worth the wait for that juicy taste. lol...that's funny about the frogs, I wonder if we would find Kermit in one of those crowns. I usually just cut the eyes off down the sides after cutting off the top and bottom. Thanks for the tidbits on pineapples. They are the best!!

Other countries that export pineapples are Thailand, Phillipines, Brazil, Cote d'Ivoir, and Costa Rica. I would like to visit all of these countries, do you think one would fit in my luggage.

we used to grow pineapples in our backyard. it was the small variety of pineapple called the QUEEN pineapple from Ormoc, Philippines. we just left it alone in the farthest side of the garden because of the countless spikes on its leaves. we were able to harvest a couple of very small but very sweet QUEEN pineapples from our very own backyard:)

Wow thanks for sharing that with us. I found that very interesting. I love fresh pineapple. It's been years since I have any though. My husband is not big on fruit and vegetables so we don't buy to much of either.

Veggies and fruit provide necessary nutrients. You and your hubby should rejoin the produce world.

Here in the Philippines(Im in Bukidnon) Pineapples season is a very wonderful time of the year (any tropical fruit season here is wonderful) people would rush to fruit vendors and buy what fruit is in season especially pineapple, and they eat it fresh, make it to pie, tart, juice they even add it to adobo it adds a refreshing flavor to balance the savory taste of the adobo. The cargo trucks that passes by the street that brings the fresh pineapple is so huge and the truck smells sweet.I really appreciate how much effort they put into planting and growing the pineapple fruit. have a great day =3

Is adobo a meal or a seasoning? In America adobe is a seasoning. Do people chase after the pineapple truck. When is pineapple season in the Philippines? I'm sure you have nice weather year round!
