My Parents Don't Want Anything For Christmas!

What the heck am I supposed to do?! My mother and father are very adamant about not wanting me or my sister to get them anything for Christmas. How can I not? They're my parents! They want us to save our money because I'm going away to college starting in January and I might not have a job then. Yet, how much is it to get them each a gift? Really? I already bought my mother a book that now I'm having doubts on. (I actually did get it free on Amazon because I had a bunch of gift cards).I bought it before they told me they didn't want anything!
The book is for new moms. Advice for new moms. But it's written from a parent who was a new mom and it's utterly hilarious. I thought she could reminescence about my younger years and laugh about it. And if I give her that, what do I get my father? I can't leave him hanging! Yikes! What a dilemma! Any suggestions?

Hi StephanieAnnc, I probably think that my children are in the
same delimma...The keep asking me what I want and I honestly do
not want them to spend them money purchasing me anything...Its
not like I have everything but I am not working right and have
no intentions of going back to work...I have more clothes, shoes
than I will ever wear out.. I just don't need anything else.
So I could not come up with anything to tell them.
But since you have something for your mom how about getting your
father something inezpensive that he could get some use out of,
like is he involved in any sports. fishing or anything like
that....What about a nice TV pillow for them to use when they
are watching in bed...or a nice plant for your mom something she
can look at while you are gone and still think about you...what
about some matching PJ's for them
Wiah I could help more..good luck in school...happy holidays!!!!!

Thanks for the ideas! I ended up getting him a book, even though he's not a big reader. The only book he ever read front to back was "Angels and Demons," but I think this hilarious memoir might spark something!
And I understand why they don't want anything, but I feel like they deserve something and I didn't just want to get them something. I wanted something that held meaning and made their hearts melt or their souls laugh.

I agree with most of the others on this conversation. Go ahead and give them a gift. Just like you got the book for your mother because it might bring funny memories, what about your father can you get that would do the same thing?

I actually did find one. He's not a big reader so I really hope he does like the book and try to read it. It's funny so maybe it'll keep his attention. It's entitled "Sh*t my Dad says' if you want to go look it up! It's supposed to be a hilarious memoir!

My parents still write 'From Santa' on them even though I'm 20 years old now! It's kind of cute though, I must admit! It's been a tradition.

Explain to them that you enjoy giving, and that the gifts are from gift cards. Does your dad read? Play golf? Like interesting foods? Do you have any more Amazon gift cards or enough in Paypal to order something? Then just tell them you spent "free money" on them.

Humor can be a wonderful gift. I think you will be showing them how caring and smart you are by using your online earnings for their presents. It is kind of a grown up and mature thing for you to be giving them gifts.

Actually, your comment really helped me a lot! I used the last $5 I have with Amazon and transferred the $9.86 in my Paypal to my checking account. Then, I found a book called 'Sh*t my Dad says' for about $10 and bought it using the Amazon gift card and charging the other $5 on my credit card. Then when the Paypal money goes through to my checking account, I can pay the money due on my credit card. So, technically, it was free money!
Ha, they can't say anything now!

That sounds like a cute idea! I made myself a scrapbook once, actually! I decided to get my father a book, since I got my mother a book before she said she didn't want anything. (She says that every year but none of us ever listen! ) My father doesn't read as much but I hope the title catches his interest and he gives the book a chance!

I used to give them coupon books, but I' feel like I always do that. I know they're my parents and all they want to know is that I love them, but I can't bear to see them buying all my college dorm stuff and not give them somethinng in return. It means so much to me what they do. Maybe I'll write a short note with the books I'm giving then as well to show them how much o love then. Thanks!

Well, I already had my mother's gift before they said anything. So I didn't want to not give it to her. Yet, I didn't have my fathers. I found him a book though. With my gift cards. It was technically free money, so they can't complain. And I bet the books wouldn't go to waste either! Thanks for the response!

Hi Stephanie,
I tell my kids that each year also. None of us has much money and I don't think we should be spending our money on gifts that no one needs. Still, I know how you feel because they have told me not to buy them gifts also and I can't do it. So we have set some limits and boundries so that we just exchange something small. I think your mom will love the book. Just get your dad something small that doesn't cost much. What they really don't want is for you to go spending a lot of money on them. I don't know your dad so can't really help you with the gift ideas but keep it small...a few lottery tickets and something you bake?

I don't know if you've decided what to do yet (I'm responding from an email) but I can tell you what I gave my parents one year when they said the same thing to me: I wrote a short story about each of them.
I'm not a professional writer, by any means, but I did my best and wrote from my heart. They both teared up and told me it was the best gift they could ever receive.

That is so sweet of you! One time, I wrote my grandfather a card telling him that I loved him and it made his day!
I decided to get my father a book as well. It's almost. Memoir but it's hilarious because his dad says the funniest things. It's called "Sh*t my dad says" Maybe I'll write a note along with the books explaining why I chose them and how I couldn't resist getting them something and how it ended up being free.

The best gifts you can give your parents are not things, but your love for them. Things fade, parents get old, remember them in your youth and as you age along with them. Remember the sacrifices they made for you and how much they still think for your future even now.
Give them a hug daily. I am sure they will appreciate the hugs more than things.
Whenever possible, obey.

I know whatcha mean. I wanted to give them something more though. You know what I mean? I know they know that I love them, but I wanted to show it in a different way. I wanted to ive them something heartfelt that will bring back memories and such. And I th ink I found the two perfect books to do that! (AS long as they read them!)

Hi! Here is a possible idea sort of along the same line--does he have any films that could be transferred to a new format or old pictures that could be put in a picture frame? Sometimes people of this age group, they want something familiar, something memorable.
Hope this will work!

Why can't you accept the fact they don't want anything?
How about respecting their wish?
I am happy my kids respect me if I tell them I don't want anything and they don't give me an other useless present which is just a waste of money to me.

Normally I would respect their wished, except I bought my mother something before they said anything and I'm not going to let it go to waste, so I have to give my father something. I ended up getting these 2 hilarious books so they can reminiscence about my younger years while I'm away at college. I mean, it's not a useless gift compared to what I've given them other years.

That's exactly what I'm doing! I decided to get them both a book that will bring them back a few years. I just hope they read them! I'm going to write a short note as well explaining why I did get them something.

Your mom will not refuse the book once you give it to her and that you got it for free. The only thing that I think she would ask you is, how did you get so many gift cards? If your father is also fond of reading, why not also give him a book like the one you gave your mom? This time, covering the father side. After they are both done with their respective readings, they can then exchange books and continue reminiscing :)

I earn the gift cards from various online sites. I usually get a $10 amazon giftcard every 4 weeks or so, so they just kept adding up! I had about $65 in gift cards. So I bought my boyfriend a shirt, book, an Xbox live card and bought my mother that book with the giftcards for Christmas. I used the last $5 on a book for my dad and paid the other $5 with the money I got from mylot in my paypal.
I hope my dad does read the book. He's not a big reader, but it's supposed to be hilarious so I hope he likes it. It's called 'Sh*t my dad says'

Maybe instead of buying them something, make something from something you already have. A gift from the heart often means more to someone that anything that money can buy and if you put your whole self into it, all should go well. I know it is too late to help with last year, but it might help with this year. Have a great weekend!!!

They want you to save for incoming college, as you mentioned. If ever you will tell her that you have a bunch of gift cards from amazon or anywhere then it might change her mind.Anyway, I believe that the greatest gift is to give happiness to your receiver.Be it a tangible or intangible things, important is you will show how you want them to be happy.

My parents would say the same. You may want to give them supply of their medications or vitamins. Usually, at that age, they were probably taking medications for their heart problems.

Well, my parents aren't THAT old yet, well, my father is 60 and takes vitamins, but I feel like I'm aging him that way. I'll keep that in mind though for when they get older! Thanks a ton!

I think you shouldn't worry about it!
Specially if you got that book for free. If the only reason your parents don't want you to get them any present is for you not to spend anything, then this gift has achieved that purpose!
Now if only you could have something similar for your father.

Hi Stephanie: Just go on and give them their presents. Follow your heart, you want to be special with them and sure they deserve it. Actually I think your parents are too good and they feel concerned about your financial situation which is lovely.

That's a thoughtful thing to do. I see that you have a gift ready for your mom but not your dad. How about focus on things that your dad really is dying to have (off course not the expensive things like cars and the likes). Get him something he does for a hobby or anything that he likes to do on his spare time. If you still have gift cards left then use it to find something for your dad on the internet or if you can't find something for him ask him what he likes and tell him the choices that can be found on the internet so as not to give him something he doesn't like or need.
I hope this helps..... Merry Christmas to you and your family! GOODLUCK!
