Can you remember people's names easily?

To be honest, I am not very good at this as I always forget people's names within an hour after they have told me their names. This gets worse if I am told with more than 5 names at a time. Even if I can remember all the names, I cannot usually match them with the correct faces. Therefore, the percentage for me to be able to call the person by his name after the first time I meet him is less than 5%. Yet, I know some people who can remember names once the people have introduced themselves to him. Are you one of these people and how can you do this?

Hi! I could remember the names of those people with who I get in touch on regular basis. It is possible that if I have met a person only once and I have no common interest with him/her, I may forget his/her name.

Yes, that's why sometimes I just remember the short form of the names, like Ben for Benjamen and Lucy for Lucinda, etc.

When i meet someone new i do not ask their names right away. I keep until we are about to say goodbye. After that i keep the name in my thought. I visualize the face and the easiest way to identify. Once i do this, i don't forget their name. I usually use their names during our conversation if we are newly acquaintance and usually the full name of the person.

Maybe this may help because you can associated them with what you have talked about and remember the conversation is usually easier than remembering their names.

I am very forgetful about people's name just as well. In fact there are times that even those whom I know for long,I sometimes forget their name and could only remember after a while. That is memory gap or what? Well I think most people are like because most of my friends also tell the same thing about their forgetfulness experience. Now if there are those who are very sharp in remembering names, lucky are them.

Yes, sometimes I just cannot recall the people's names all of a sudden.
13 Dec 11
hi:) Most of the time I can remember their names even if just first introduced to me, but I can remember better their faces, so even if sometimes they wasn't actually introduced if I saw them with my friends, I still recall them once I see them again. what I don't recall is streets name and addresses, I'm really bad at that even if I've been to that places many times, I still forget.

If I refer to the map the first time I find the place, I will always remember the place but if I walk to there occasionally, then I will never remember the names of the street but only the architecture there.

I am not a person who is able to remember every names who I has interacted with. I find it is really difficult to remember it all at once but it becomes easy when we interact with the persons each day. When we interact with them unknowingly we have the names in our mind. I don't know how I studies it. I think it is a simple human behavior or character . What do you think ?
@06MLam (620)

It depends. If I miss it the first time, I have to ask for the name again even if I keep in contact with that person as it is very easily to forget people's name after meeting like 20 of them for just once.

I am not very good at people names either and sometimes it can be embarrassing especially when I have already been introduced. It is rather strange because my memory for other things is quite good. I tend to remember numbers like pin-numbers and account numbers quite easily and I realized that I need to focus and concentrate more on the names. But it didn't work too well and I read a book on remembering. You look at the person who is introduced and like their name to a picture in your mind. The more ridiculous the image, the more likely are to remember the name. A name like Jill if it's a woman for instance, you would visualize her with her brother coming down the hill with a pale of water - as in the children's nursery rhyme, Jack and Jill.. If you don't think that is strong enough an image, imagine the pale of water balancing on her head. The next time you look at her face, you would remember her name. I tried it, and it really worked, but the problem it the mind likes to be lazy and go back into its old ways, but if you can get into the habit of making crazy images of people in your mind linked to their name in this way, then you should always remember names. But I wouldn't tell them what you are imagining about them or they may feel unsulted... But there again, some people get upset if you can't remember their name! _Derek

Maybe I will try this next time and of course I won't tell people what I have imagined in order to get their names correct.

I used not to remember the names of the people who are introduced to me actually.Maybe because they are not that important persons. But i noticed that for the past months, i can already remember the names of the person if they are introduced to me. Or maybe it really took the effort to memorize them. One such incident is when 5 male and female members of CPAs were introduced to me, for me to assist. I really memorized their names when i asked them listed in a piece of paper. Then , i spoke each name as they introduced themselves. Whew, after that i was able to call them by their names. I associated their face with their name. Like the guy with eyeglasses was. . .

Sometimes association with something special of the person might help, like in your case.

For me it's not too hard. Although I may forget when I never seen them or haven't really talked to them. But once I get to see their faces and have a little chat with them I would have their names in my mind. It will take long years to forget a name of a person, usually I forget names of those whom are not actually my friends.

If I have not seen that person for a very long time, like 10years, it might take me quite a while to remember who he or she is but all the memory will just come back as soon as I can recognise that person.

No I can not. It is very difficult for me. If you only can not match faces and names, I can not remember the names completely. I still can remember the face. So I usually try to have the picture and write the name on it. A modern cell phone can help me remember people's name.

No 06MLam.. I am not one among theose people who are gifted with good memory to rememer every single person they meet. I have a pretty decent memory and I try my level best to remember the names, but have had my share of embarassing moments confusing people's names. I sometimes try to make a mental picuture of a person and his features ( Its something I read somehwere ), but unfortunately it is not foolproof and still the old problem of forgetting names persists, when I meet a large no. of people.

Maybe we have to find another way to solve our problems as this problem always makes us into embarrassing situations. I sometimes just escape from the problem by not calling the person's name while greeting he or she if I cannot remember his or her name. However, I still think that I should search for my own way to tackle this problem rather than just escaping from it.

I am not one of them, but sometimes it is already in our nature. Even we don't like it, it just happen.

That's why we have to try to avoid it from happening or at least reduce the chance for it to happen.

Depends on the person and the conditions when i meet them.... I kind of remember their name if they do something that makes a great impact on my mind... But is their name is kind of complicated,i might take time to memorize it.. It may vary from person to person...

If their names are unfamiliar or let's say strange if they are telling me their names in their own language but with the English translation version, that would take me ages to learn how to pronounce them properly as well as to remember them.

There are times when I can remember people's names easily. I think that it just depends on several different things. Sometimes, it's more difficult for me to actually remember people's names.

If the people gave me very strong impression the first time I met them, I will probably remember them the next time I see them, including their names.

two things i am terrible at are remembering names and remembering directions. like you i often forget the names of people just a short time after they are introduced to me, and i can easily get lost to places specially when the place has many turns even i've been to that place several times.

I can find my direction very well with a map but I just got no idea why I can't remember the names.

Remembering someone'nam,e was always something that seemed to come easily to me. i muight remember a name befor i remember their face. It doesn't take effort or pondering for me to come up with a name no matter how much time may have passed.

Good to hear that! The problem for me is to remember the names shortly after the people have introduced their names to me for just once. If I know the people for longer, I might be able to remember all their names. To be honest, after getthing into university for about 2.5 months, I still do not know all the names of people in my course with just around 47 of us.

Usually I remember the names in a easy manner. At the same time if my mind got any confusion about the accuracy of a name, then it is very difficult to recollect that name. There were many occasions I found myself in deep trouble when some distant relatives requested me to fill up some forms for them, in which there name to be added. For some moments that particular name wouldn't reach in my mind.
@06MLam (620)

This is quite common because you don't usually call the full names of people. It also takes me quite a while to remember people's full name if these people are less close to me.

Stress is one root cause of forgetfulness. This is true in my case. Ever since I retired from office work, deadlines and the rest, my memory improved and I am more organized than before. But then again, this does not apply to anyone. On some people old age triggers their forgetfulness.

Nice to hear that you are enjoying your life after retirement because some people might find it boring after retirement. Working do give people quite a lot of stress sometimes. For myself, I will become more messy and unorganised if I have too many work to do because I just do not have time to plan and think what I have to do next. Ageing is really a problem to a lot of people which leads to people's forgetfulness as what you have mentioned.
