I am thinking of growing my own vegetables but we don't have a garden. My next option would be to plant on pots on top of our roof.
Can you suggest fruit bearing plants or vegetables that I can plant on pots? Our climate here is rainy season and summer only.

This is a good idea. You can try to plant some herbs, such as the parsley and so on. The herbs can be used quite often when you are cooking. It is very convenient that you can have the fresh herbs anytime you want. You can just pick some from the pots. Or you can plant pepper or cherry tomato. I have seen some people plant these on the pots already, so it will not be very difficult.

Hi youless.
Those are good suggestions. It would be easy to find such vegetables. The good thing about it is that I like the colors of those vegetables. I would just have to think of how I can cover them. Maybe, when they started bearing fruits, I would just wrap the fruits on plastics.
Have a nice day!!!

Most vegetables grow in pots including those that grow on creepers for which you will have to make arrangements for the creeper to climb.

I'll think twice about the creepers. I am not good in forming vine walls. I'll stick with small vegetables like petchay or lettuce and Okra.
Thanks for the idea.

What you can grow depends on how much weight your roof will hold and what kind of veggies are planted where you live. I have even grown potatoes in big sacs and better than on earth. Any vegetable can be grown in a container. Read online how big are the plantĀ“s roots so you choose the right container size. In my climate (dry Summer now) I have tomatoes and peppers. Choose the right seed. I spent too much money on imported seeds, but normal seeds do better in my climate.

1-Beets- These can be grown in as little space as a cake pan and are better picked small & tender.
2-Spinach- it is good both cooked & raw. This is a cool weather plant and does not like hot summer.
3-Leaf Lettuce- can be grown in a small container and doesnot need hot summer days to mature.
4- patio Tomatoes - They are coming up with more and more types of tomatoes that are suited to container growing.
5- Radishes - Like beets, radishes donot need a huge pot to grow and mature fairly quickly.
6-Green Beans - You can plant 16 green bean plants in a square foot.
7-Green Peppers - These take a fairly good size pot and are definitly warm weather.
8- Squash- new varieties are very compatible. this mild summer patty pan squash is only 2ft high and 2ft wide. it may be too big for an apartment but then maybenot.
9-Eggplant- Its a mainstay Mediterraean cooking. Its compact size makes it an ideal choice for container growing.
10-Garlic Chives- Its beautiful flower and every part of plant is edible.
11-Swiss chard- Its a sweet buttery flavor that is delicious.
12-A pot of Herbs-You can mix and match herbs in a container. Basil, thyme, sage, tarragon, rosemary will all grow fine.

These is a good list. I think among your list the Green Beans, Leaf Lettuce, Patio Tomatoes, Eggplant, Garlic and Spinach would survive in our climate.
Thank you for the tips.
