What would you do if you only earn $5 of all day work? There are lots of people who even earn less than $5 a day but surprisingly they can survive supporting 6-10 children, enjoy life and live happily. I know most of us may say that it ain't enough but what if you are in their situation? Could you survive if you earn $5 a day?

if the 5 is for 7 days I can buy food/clothes/etc for it for the 4 of us. but I cannot pay our health insurance (it's law to have one), burial insurance, rent, gas/electricity etc from it. So just for surviving it's enough.

Hello Jacruz25,
I don't think earning of $5/day in a place like DELHI is enough to survive with a family. These days house rents in DELHI itself is so high that one need to earn much higher.Though $5 is sufficent to survive only if i don't have a family to look after and i have my own house.

Hello... Here $5 would not really be enough... Yes, if the fellow can live like a Spartan then it'd be good. I'd say $10 per would be good enough for me.. Yes, some people can manage with less money too, but I am quite lavish at spending...
Please note $1 is 50 Indian rupees approximately..

If I have my own house and no internet at all. I might actually survive. $5 will be for my food and maybe transpo if my work is just near my house.

I don't believe that others could survive 5$ a day salary. In today's world that everything rise up always. Im wondering how could they survive. Maybe if they have gardens to plant vegetables and fruits so that they will not buy it anymore in the market. I would say they can save money. By using charcoals from recycling wood you can save gas from your stove and electricity. Going back to basic and simple life is the best way to save everything. But if you live in the city, its impossible to live with that 5$ salary. In rural areas it could attainable and possible.

Hi Jacruz25.
I think this varies from country to country. For Instance I am from India and so 5 $ a day translates to around 8000 Rs per month which is like the salay of more than 90 % of the population .Thankfully I earn much more but seeing most of my nation lives on only 5 $ I surely think I can too. But it would involve leading a basic life and cutting out the luxuries and being single too would help.
But here a huge chunk of the population live on leass than 1 $ a day. ( 60 cents is thrshold for below poverty line) . If I ever have to live on such income I am sure I would not be able to. I really dont know how people do it and also have large families, but as for me it seems impossible.

I guess yes, being a Filipino, I believe that we are very flexible in everything. That's why we could easily survive any calamities in life and we could easily adjust to any country we decided to work. There are lots of people here earning less than $5 but still they can manage to smile and be happy for small blessings. Even the children are regarded as blessings or wealth, we never complain on how hard it was to raise so many children but just confirm the happiness of a bigger family. Maybe because our demands depends upon our capacity to earn. The bigger earnings we have, the more are our expenses. What is important is we could give food for our children, the rest does not matter anymore. Filipinos do get to find ways like for shelter, living under the bridge does not matter to some family as long as they are together.

I definitely wouldn't be well off, well at this point in time I would because my parents are still supporting me, but I think I could survive. I can't picture my parents wouldn't take care of me in the future, they said they would never kick me out. Right now I'm studying online and doing all the work I can online, not because they expect me to do more than school work but I just have an obsession with trying to make money online. It's not even worth the time considering what I'm making but I can't stop trying to find new methods and to try to make more. But yeah, it would be very difficult to only live off of 5 dollars a day.

the more salary you earn, the more project for a money to spend, and if you notice later, small or big salary is for all of us to face later financial problem.
Its only the way we budget our earnings, on how to add or multiply, and no such thing as liabilities, think assets always.

It is hard to tell if 5$ per day will be enaugh.
If one lives in the streets , he may get sick and probabely won't be able to afford medical therapy.
If he stays healthy , he can probabely sleep somewhere with a roof to protect himself from the rain...He can even get food from trees that grow in the nature but he will also need other kinds of food .
I know there are people that search food and other things in the garbage everyday many times a day. I see some when I walk with my dog around the neighbourhood.
If one has no house and no normal life , he has a lot less things to be worry about and he will need food mostly and somewhere to stay at.

Well I have'nt experienced it...I never had a day where I was left out with just $5. But I think I could survive. But I have to workout on my expenses and plan my living. I too agree that there are bid family members who just earn enough for a day and are living a happy life. It depends on the individuals.

I guess it depends in what country you live, do you have to pay rent? do you have a family to feed, do you grow your own crop? so most of your food comes from your produce? then may be you can do it...but then do you have to pay for internet and so on? so no...5 dollars a day! won't even come closer.

For a single person to live with 5$ is quiet enough to just surviving, of course you cant survive when you have to support many children s, am sure that must have to starve for days, and just for food alone they have to struggle for it, for me i can survive alone with that money i meant only surviving like animals with no time pass or extra activity that make us humans. nowadays even 5$ is not enough since things are getting expensive.

I think that if it is just me, I might be able to survive. Of course, I might have to be creative with what I do to stretch the money out. However, when there is one person, it is not as hard as one would think to survive on about five dollars or so a day. Well maybe it's hard but rather not impossible to say the very least. There are going to be a lot of tricky situations about that.
Also, one thing to really consider is that if you had saved money in years previously, you should have something to fall back on if things get a bit rougher. That is the thing so, that many people don't save their money when it is rolling in. Therefore, there are going to be a lot of people who are going really struggle. I think that going down from a lot of money a day to very little will be a shock for most.

Hi there, Interesting topic. If I had $5 of all day work or get paid $5 a day, I'd probably buy food or something. I can buy clothes less than 5 dollars as well.

I think I can survive. But being in an average type of a family, it would really be hard to adopt with your new environment. But somehow, you'll get to it. We can still live life happily because it doesn't matter if you have the right amount of money. It is with how happy you are living together with your family. Have a nice day.
