Do you ever wonder why celebrities get plastic surgery? I mean I understand that if your an actor or an actress it's a tough business so they may feel that they have to make themselves look younger in order to compete with the younger actors & actresses, but do they realize just how bad they look afterward? Nine times out of ten you can always tell when someone has had plastic surgery because they look so very bad. I mean think about Michael Jackson & what he did to himself. Joan Rivers is actually famous for all the surgeries that she's had done & Joan Van Ark who played Val on the prime time soap opera Knots Landing has had a number of surgeries so much so that you can no longer even tell who she once was. Just look at the photos below & see how very bad they look. So you have to wonder why do they do it? Why not just grow old naturally? If you were a famous celebrity would you have plastic surgery done or would you just allow nature to take it's course?

A lot of people have already pointed out that celebrities are under tremendous pressure to look good. I won't repeat it. But I'd also like to point out that plastic surgery doesn't always look bad afterwards. When plastic surgery goes well and looks good... you don't hear about it. You don't notice it. Marilyn Monroe had plastic surgery, and did you ever hear about it? Even suspect it? And I think Cindy Jackson, the woman who holds the world record for the most cosmetic procedures, looks pretty darn good for her age. ( www.cindyjackson.com ) Granted, she's not nearly as old as Joan Rivers. I think that plastic surgery can be done well, but there is certainly a limit to what it can do even if it is in the hands of the most elite professionals in the world. That's the reason I think many celebs opt for it, because they honestly believe it's the best move for them and that it can make them look better. Obviously, sometimes things go wrong for whatever reason... whether it's because they had a doctor who botched it or they just pushed the surgery past it's natural limit. I think that's the reason Michael Jackson and Joan Rivers look so bad to people... they had so much done. If I was a famous celebrity, I'd probably have plastic surgery up to a certain point. At that certain point, I think I'd just have to accept that I'm getting older. But, I'm not a celebrity and I don't have hordes of cash lying around. And I'm not really aging yet either, so I won't worry about it!

Marilyn Monroe had at least a chin implant/augmentation and a nose job. It was actually pretty standard procedure for stars to have some plastic surgery in the classic days of film, studios and managers would even recommend it. As for the stars that look bad... they probably do realize that they don't look good. I think most of them don't try it intending to look bad, but they either make a mistake or wind up on a slippery slope where they just can't stop. I think Michael Jackson in particular was on some sort of dangerous quest for the ideal image, and was constantly trying to fix things he perceived as flaws. Instead of looking better, he just wound up pushing the surgery past its limit. There's only so many nose jobs a nose can take. A good and morally upright plastic surgeon would have refused to do anymore work on him, but there are loads of plastic surgeons out there and not all of them are good. But you know, once they've had the work done and it looks bad... there's not a whole lot they can do. Plastic surgery usually isn't easily reversible. If they honestly think they look good that way, it's probably better for them and their mental health and happiness. They can't really change it, and wallowing in misery and hating their own reflection really isn't a great option.

A good plastic surgeon would refuse to do more, but there are enough plastics surgeons in the world that if you knock on enough doors you'll probably find somebody willing to do what you want. And there are plenty of scammers and pretenders willing to ruin a face for hordes of cash as well.

It's is sad just how far some celebrities will go. I think that after so many surgeries Plastic Surgeons should refuse to do anymore, but that will never happen as long as the money keeps pouring in.

Maybe the actress and actor want to make there self more attracting on tv but honestly i don't like artist that make some operation on their face..i think their face become mature after the surgery and it will take a life time treatment for that operation.. If im an artist i will show my natural face and i will not take any operation..

I dont think they get plastic surgery because they like that , that is the demand of their profession.Honestly everyone in this world wants to look younger and beautiful but some people dont like to go through such surgeries some people cant afford, but people who like and can afford, they go through that.

True. I just can't see looking like that when it just doesn't look good. I know they think it does, but it really doesn't.

I think that being a celebrity puts you in a different light from others in the world. Celebrities make their living on how they look and how the world perceives that look. keeping the fame and popularity going for them can depemnd on appearance. getting plastic surgery can keep celebrities in the realm they need to be to keep their success alive. it should not have to be that way but it is often how it happens.

I agree. There is this constant pressure in Hollywood to look good & glamorous at all times forcing these actors & actresses to go to extremes. Me personally I would rather just retire then to go through one surgery after another.

Robswife: By sharing the images of before & after of Knots Landing, you have driven the point home very well! I reckon that being their primary means of making a living at the level that they see for themselves, they must be feeling tremendous pressure to look attractive all the time. It looks ridiculous having seen those two shared photos though that the pressure can get on them so much that they only get driven by the intensity of desire without pausing to assess what they have made of themselves! That's a pity for sure. If I were a celebrity, I would have followed the few that are content with staying as they are & depending more on characterization roles which requires actors to just the make up for the specific roles.

It's not really a before & after picture since those are two different actresses, but the point I was trying to make is that these two are just 2 out of over a hundred or more actors & actresses who have plastic surgery done. Even though they look awful they still can't seem to stop themselves. They just keep right on getting one surgery after another.

I remember seeing Joan Rivers interviewing celebrities with her daughter. When we cut off our cable TV I haven't seen shows where I usually see her and her daughter. And that was 6 years ago and she looks like an old lady those times. So is this her latest photo? She looks really odd.

Joan Rivers must have had a better surgeon than most, she doesn't look nearly as bad as most do. Most look really really bad! Hers isn't as bad as I thought it was going to look before I looked at the picture of her. BUT Joan Van Ark! now that is another story! Oh my goodness! I could believe how bad she looked! How disappointed she must have felt afterwards! She should be taking that doctor to court! He ruined her! She was so beautiful before! I hope she can find a better surgeon to help her to look better! I feel so sad for her... But there is a lot of pressure in the hollywood circle to have plastic surgery. Some just go too far and have too much done!

I agree that some some go too far & have too much work done. Perfect example: Michael Jackson. I remember what he used to look like back in the 80's. In the 90's he no longer looked like the Michael Jackson I grew up with.

In fact most celebrities earn money by their look. So they will try all methods to look better. Having the plastic surgery is a shortcut. As nobody was born to have a perfect face. So they want to take a risk to have the plastic surgery to have the nice look immediately. As to the result, they haven't thought so much about it. They care to the present much more. I love China

Yes I agree that that's probably what they are thinking. I think it has a lot to do with insecurities & that as they get older to realize they have to compete with much younger actors & actresses.

Aging can have some rather bad psychological affects on people. Not to mention the fact our society really does have a disturbing emphasis on looks. Almost to the point of a disturbing level to say the very least. There are a lot of times where celebrities get this the worst all, and they are going to be shoved right underneath a microscope for the entire world. And they get desperate and try to change some things. Often times, it is a slight change. Then they tend to get more desperate and there are times where they overcompensate. To the point where they contain more plastic than a toy factory. There are times where celebrities just go over the top and they look like something out of a horror movie, which is sad.

It really is. I used to watch Knots Landing back in the day with my Mom & I remember Joan Van Ark as looking very beautiful. I think she would have been an equally beautiful older woman, but to look at her now it's like you said, it's like something out of a horror movie.

Some people look better as they get older and their personality starts to show on their face. The problem with people who have had PS is that their real personality never shows on their face. They just look like they are in a wind-tunnel, with their huge, out of proportion, mouths, upward-slanting cat's eyes and Barbie-doll plastic skin! Give me a real face to look at any day!

I agree. I remember a commercial that starred Joan Rivers a way back & she was asking the person sitting beside her if she was smiling because she couldn't tell. She was making fun at all the plastic surgeries that she's been known to have. So obviously they've heard what people say about how they look & yet they still get more plastic surgeries done on their face. I simply don't understand it.

The main reason celebrities alter their appearence to appear younger or "ehance" their beauty ultimately boils down to their own insecurities and fitting society's picture perfect image of how a celebrity "should look." If I were a celebrity i would not endure plastic surgery unless it was absolutely necessary. For example, getting into a car crash or some accident where my face was disfigured.

Yes I agree under those circumstances I could most definitely understand someone getting plastic surgery. I also agree with you as to the reason why these celebrities get plastic surgery in the first place. That makes the most sense.

the face and body of an actor/actress are their bread and butter. And i think it's addicting to them to have a plastic surgeries, it makes them very confidence with their self.

Yes that's true. It's a very tough business. You have to be thick skinned & take everything with a grain of salt. I personally could never do what they do. I don't think my nerves could handle it LOL
