Thank God for the Poundshops here in the UK!

Our local Poundshops are always heaving at this time of the year. In this financial climate, who, without a good job, can afford a modern Christmas? Our energy bills are so huge now that a lot of people are 'energy poor'. That is that they spend more than 10% of their household income on heating and lighting their homes. They just don't have the spare cash to throw around at this joyous time of the year.
Our Poundshops fill the gap. Fortunately, most towns have at least one that carries things at heavily reduced prices, although in some not everything is a pound!
Do you use your Poundshops? They are certainly worth checking out and often carry the very thing you have been looking for forever!

I tend to spend more time in charity shops, but yes, I have been going into pound shops more often now. I've also become very good at finding bargains on Ebay. Talking of Ebay, if you're into selling on Ebay, pound shops are one possible source of stock. I bought a couple of DVDs in a pound shop a while ago and eventually sold them on for £1.99 each - only a small profit when you take into account Ebay and PayPal fees, but better than a kick in the teeth and there's some potential there in the future.

That's brilliant, I never would have thought of selling soap! I love Ebay, it gives anyone with an internet connection a chance to have a stab at business.
I read a newspaper article - it must have been a couple of years ago. It was an interview with a businessman. The way he started was, his girlfriend got into financial trouble. So they sold everything they could from her flat on Ebay. Then they sold everything in his flat on Ebay. Money still owing, they started shopping in pound shops and selling the stuff on Ebay. Then later on they went directly to wholesalers. Now he's got a big warehouse full of stuff he sells on Ebay and he's a millionaire!

I used to have a really snobby attitude towards Poundland but that was when I had a job lol.
Seriously though..you're right. These shops DO fill a gap in peoples'lives and I've bought stuff in there without any shame whatsoever (at one time I refused to go in..like the Charity shops that I have a completely different attitude towards now) so yes..go for it I say.
In fact, I wish I'd picked up a black pair of chenille gloves in there seeing as I've lost one of mine!

Keep an eye on the stock. I'm sure they'll be getting some more in for the cold weather.
I love charity shops. Most of my wardrobe comes from them! When I'm asked where I got something from I usually say: 'I'm dressed A la Charity Shop'! I've had some fantastic bargain outfits over the years!

Yes, I remember trailing round the high street shops with Mum as she wanted a pair of black trousers. She ended up buying a pair from the very last shop we went in - and it just so happened to be a Charity Shop! She wouldn't stop going on about them as they only cost her £3 (but she gave them £5), she's not tight lol.

I love these types of shops, I think they are what we call two Dollar shops, lots a good nick nacks and things, I can't pass by one, I have to go in and check what they have, always come out with something, I think it feeds my shopaholicism..

My local dollar store has the small bottles of arm and hammer detergent (32 loads) for a buck. The 96 load one at the local store is 8 bucks. So that is a good deal. Also, most paper products are quite a bit cheaper unless you go to sam's and buy enough for the whole neighborhood to use for a year. I found a really good deal on different sized post it notes that work just as good at the name brand, and I use post it notes all the time.

hello there.i am a Filipino and i am not sure if i understand what you mean by the word Poundshops. i guess poundshops are stores that sells bargain goods at an incredibly low price. i hope i am correct. i hope there are also poundshop counterparts here in our country so that those less fortunate families can also enjoy the festivities of Christmas with enough foods on the table.

You're right, they're basically bargain shops. In a pound shop, everything is sold for a standard price of one British Pound - I don't know what the exchange rate is with Filipino currency, but a pound's about enough to buy a couple of chocolate bars or maybe three postage stamps. Pound shops sell all kinds of things - food, cleaning supplies, CDs, DVDs, childrens toys, books - all for a pound each.
