I think my computer is infected by virus since most of the times when I open a program it closes unexpectedly and have to open it again and also the capslock light on my keyboard is no longer working. I'm not sure if a virus caused this problem. I run an anti-virus from microsoft and used McAffe but it did not detect the virus. Does anyone know a better free anti-virus that I can download?

There is a possibility that your program is corrupted, not properly installed, or so. What kind of program that closes unexpectedly? Is it a lot of programs or only one program?
the capslock light on my keyboard is no longer working
And also there's a possibility that the problem lies in your keyboard and not because of virus. Have you checked via plug another keyboard? And even if the light can't be turned on, can you still write in Caps? (I believe you can, since you were using some caps in this discussion.. )
I just want to say that not every computer problem are caused by virus.. The problem might be something else.
And anyway, for the good Anti Virus, I suggest you to install AVG Anti Virus. Works great so far here. Well, Avast and Avira are also good, though.. Just make sure don't install two anti viruses at the same time. It may slow down your computer..

If your laptop has USB port, you should can install a portable keyboard - just to check things. If that works well, then the problem lies on your former keyboard.
And then first of all, try to either update your McAffe to their latest version or install another anti virus. Then run the virus checking..
Actually I am not really sure that it caused by viruses, but well, that's a worth try, anyway..

download stinger first (it's free) after that cleanup would be good too, next you can install an other virus killer for example avast or panda (both are free and you can find them at download.com)

Thanks! Is it also compatible with Microsoft Essentials? Since I had this software installed the system did not detect that I have an AV which is McAfee. Is it also better for spyware and malware?

I think anti viruses may slow down computers. You should try to download simple and free anti virus programs like avira.
