My son's surgery went well.

My son went for a glaucoma valve surgery on Monday and it was a success. I'm so grateful to the children's hospital here in Halifax. We got excellent doctors and nurses here. It's really a day surgery but since he's just a kid they kept him in overnight. The room was huge and it had a fridge in it, it was a private room. They want all the rooms to be private, I suppose. To me it doesn't matter one way or another, though. But wow, it was almost a hotel room, in a way. We could see the Halifax Harbour from our window.
I just love the activities they put on for the kids. They have child life specialists working on the floor, I think they're actually social workers. They had a Santa and Mrs Clause come in and gave gifts to the kids and had a mini-christmas party for the patients and parents to enjoy, and to make crafts.
We're home now, and he is glad to get home. He can't go to school for a week or so, but it's okay, because there's only 1 week of school and they don't do too much school work just before the holidays. So today my son and I put up the tree and decorated it.

Oh good, I am so happy he made it through the surgery. I think he is also pleased to be home from school for a week and spending time with mom..

That is great news that the surgery all went well. That hospital sounds pretty amazing too. I cannot stand hospitals as they are usually depressing places with little views that are worth looking from my experience. Although the main public hospital in our city that my son was born in has some pretty awesome views over the waterways from the upper floors. I remember watching the sun rising over the water not long after he was born.
So, is your son off school for the rest of the year now then? Our children finished up last Thursday and do not go back until the end of January. They are already driving us nuts!

My daughter had a serious break in her arm at around his age. We had to go to a large hospital for children. The rooms were lovely. Isn't it nice, that made the stay less scary. I think it would be fun to be a child life specialist. I am glad his surgery went well and he is getting to spend some special time with you.

It does help to decrease a child's anxiety, but really, I think it's the parents who are responsible for how a child reacts, and the amount of time the parent spends with the child.

hey that is great Mash! i was thinking before i read further that this time of year would be a great time to be in the hospital for the Christmas parties lol!
As for the Halifax harbour, one of my favourite books is Barometer Rising by Hugh MacLennan about the Halifax harbour explosion in 1917 (i am a history fanatic and a Canadian history fanatic even more so!) When will your son get out?

I´m so glad everything went well, Masihi! I was so worried him being so small. My mother had an eye surgery this Monday too, but she is old so we must expect our bodies to have problems after a certain age. I´m glad that the hospital was so nice because surgery is traumatic for children. Good for him and I hope he recovers well from his ordeal. A great hug!

It hurts me when children have health problems of any kind. I know mothers make everything easier. When are you going to know how much more he is able to see, Masihi? A big hug

I suppose it would be especially for first-times, but since both my son and daughter have been around the block a few times, they kinda know the routine. My son was crying though, but I was there, and he made it through good :-)

Glad to hear he's fine. Does that mean that his vision will be fine from now on? I hope he does not have to go through more treatments. I hope you enjoy the time you spend with him until he goes back to school.

It is good that your son is through the surgery and doing well on the recovery phase from his surgery. I know that people try to minimize the seriousness of what you and he go through with any surgery, but I understand, I have kids of my own. When the orderly and his doctor come to get him and they roll his bed in past those doors that you can't cross, and he disappears down some anonymous hallway, someone is cutting on your child. Even if it is with a laser, even if you have the best most experienced doctors in the world, sometimes things go wrong. So you don't rest, and you don't do anything that could possibly tempt fate, and even if you don't normally pray, when your child goes for surgery,no matter how "minor" it may be, you pray.
Glaucoma in a child is pretty serious and if they can't arrest it with surgery he could lose his eyesight. So my prayers are with you and my heart goes out to you. In the end it will all work out the way that faith, fate, and luck have a way of hashing things out. Good luck to your son and to you. Now that the surgery is behind you at least you can rest better.

I understood the risks involved, and since I been around the block a few times myself for retina reattachment surgeries, and both my children been through the same type of surgeries plus my daughter has a glaucoma valve in each eye I was a bit more relaxed. I guess maybe it's because I'm so used to the routines.

Aww, I'm so pleased your boy's surgery went well. My Mum is having her cataract removed in the New Year but she's already had the other one done, so knows what to expect, I suppose.
Your boy is very brave!
It sounds like the hospital is a pleasant place for the kids to stay but I can well understand why your boy is pleased to be home, especially with it being near Christmas.
I bet the tree looks lovely! Any pics?

It's a little lopsided because I let him do the decorating, since Christmas isn't so big at our home, and it was nice to let him do something for a change. I did help. Here's a pic I took with my cell phone yesterday.

I am so glad to hear that you're son's surgery went well, I know I am a bit late in responding to your discussion, but I am hoping that he is doing a lot better now and getting ready for X-Mas morning.
Its also nice to hear that hospitals are still taking the care of their patience as a priority especially when they are children. God knows children already fear being in a doctor's office let alone a hospital, and making them feel comfortable in that type of environment is so important.
I hope your son is doing well, I am sure he is getting ready for X-mas morning god knows my kids are. I wish you all the best!!!

It was one of quite a few operations in our family, actually. But yes, he knows we all care for him, and so does my daughter.
