I notice that new year of 2012 is coming closely. I will have to announce my new year resolution in front of all family member, that was tradition in my big family. So that every one can support each other goal, that the reason our resolution must be realistic and achievable. I think reducing weight should be realistic but must mention how much weight loss we plan to achieve in the following year. I think I need to figure out not only the target weight but also effective method to do it..I have seen many diet program which unable to maintain weight after successfully loss it..What do you think about above goals? How specific the goal should be?

Losing weight is an excellent resolution (if you are overweight, of course!).
I think that your goals should be very specific - remember SMART ... Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely (to give one version of the acronym).
When losing weight, it's important to realise that with most successful systems, you will start off by losing weight quickly but that, as you approach your target, the rate of weight loss slows down.
Begin by working out what your approximate ideal weight is. There are many online calculators and charts for this - just search for 'Body Mass Index calculator' or 'BMI' and you will find plenty.
There is usually an upper and a lower limit for a healthy weight for your height. As long as you fall within this range, you shouldn't stress too much about losing weight. Many people (women in particular) believe that they are more overweight than they really are.
You should take your family history into account as well. Some people are naturally heavier than others for their height and some are naturally 'skinny'. Find a weight which is healthy, you are comfortable with and is realistic.
It's a good idea to set monthly targets (allowing for the fact that you aren't going to lose the same amount every month). That way you will gradually develop a regime and dietary habit which will naturally keep your weight where it should be (or where you want it to be).

Well Owlwings, really appreciate to drop by and commented on this discussion..
You are right, losing weight is not easy resolution.. We need to have proper Goal, we can use SMART goals as per your suggestion.. So we must be specific, like how many kgs in how many months our target.. I would rather to set not too higher target in the first months rather than having up and down weight..It would be not realistic if we could not get it in the first month.. You have good points, we should check our family history about weight.. Since to thin or skinny person is not really healthy.. However, I believe our body will find the correct or ideal weight after we can push it to as low level as possible..
Good idea to set monthly target and follow up to check against our resolution, meaning we should have good plan and action for our resolution..

well, it seems good for you and every one..we should have good program to follow our resolution..Since if only plan without action then we would ended up to wasting time and maybe money as well.. So the key of our resolution is the way we carry on and motivate to accomplish it..

If you need to lose weight, then the new year is often the perfect place for you to start, because you know that there will be a lot of other people who are trying to do the same things as you are during that time. However, not many people manage to stick to their resolutions because they get bored of the changes that they've had to make to their lives. If you resolve to make smaller changes, such as eating one fewer piece of chocolate per night at the beginning, then this is an excellent start and you would be able to build on it from there.

Hi omchesunche, actually i am on my diet program too. I just joined gym last month. I am very commited to attend the class organized in the gym center. I had lose 2 kg in 1 week.
For me, when we talk about diet, its not only lose weight but also how to create a better body shape.

That is a good idea and we should have a good plan to implement them in the future. We should practice a regular exercise and follow them to reduce weight.

Hi omchesunche, I normally try not to make New Year resolutions
because I just don't...
I have tried several times to lose weight...I don't believe in
diets...I just don't think they work effectively..But thank God
I am slowly losing a pound here and there...So as long as there
is a will there is a way...and I am on my way....

I think it is a good goal but i would not be to specific don't push your self to far think realistically and healthy i know some friends that took it to far remember beauty is within. that it a good idea to be healthy and to eat and excessive right. i would talk to a doctor and a nutritionist and see what they say is the best way.

It's also my objective next year. My priority after gaining much weight unpredictably this year. I have done losing weight my weight the right way before, and I am sure, I am gonna do it soon.
First of all, everything should be in moderation. Everything excess is harmful and dangerous. It takes discipline and sacrifice to achieve what we need and what we want in life.
Secondly, the food we eat is what we are. My choice of foods reflects what I am today. So, this time I have to change my lifestyle and be more disciplined in everything I do.
It is not easy, but no pain no gain. My doctor says I might have heart problem or diabetes because I am overweight.
So, I have to go back to the gym, eat less carbs and sweet foods, pastries and beverages.Drink a lot of H2O.
Health is wealth, its more expensive to be sick and be hospitalized.

That also is my 2012 new year resolution. I will be turning thirty six, and they say after thirty five, you have to be more careful with your diet. I think you should just stick to eating healthy to add strength to your body, and the weight will just melt off.

Yes i think you should enjoy and indulge in Christmas lunch and deserts first before you tackle on the weight loss hehehe.. I need to lose few pounds too and losing my flabs is my ultimate reso for 2012. And diets, to be honest i hate that word, should be seen as a lifestyle change because as soon as one think of the word "diet", you immediately question yourself how long is it going to last.
