Write about what you know!!

They do say that there is a book inside each and everyone of us, its up to us wether we ever decide to write a book of any sort.
They also say that if you ever decide to write a book then the best place to start is with what you know best....
So my question is...... off the top of your head/first thing that pops into your head, if you were asked to write a book what would you know best to write a book about?
I think mine would be about cheap quick recipes.

That is easy it would be a book of advice to other mothers about children and your relationship to your kids and there personalities and disabilities if they have any.

Wow, that was quick, since you write a lot about children on mylot, what sort of chapters would you have etc?
I'm only asking as I know you love chatting about children and asking for advice and giving other people advice.
Really when your baby is asleep you should try and plan a book as you are very good on that subject

I love that ShyBear88. You must have a lot of great stories about personalities and disabilities.
People should be educated on disabilities because I don't think that there is enough education out there about it, and if you could write a book on it, then that would be wonderful.

If I was to write a book on what i know best it would probably be depression and bi-polar discorder. And what it is like living with people with these disorders. Alot has been learned over the last decade about these two psychological disorders. There wasn't alot known back in the 70's and 80's when i was raising my daughter and she was misdiagnosed.

I was depressed for many years in the 80's in my teens, I once said to someone(another teenager) that I was depressed and they laughed and said I couldn't be depressed but just p***ed off!!
A lot has changed and it would be nice ot see the changes that have happened

I know that very much now, but back when I was a teenager many people thought it just as being p***ed off, but now adays it has all changed and people now know that even young people can be depressed for very good reasons and help is so much more ready avavible. Which is very good, just wish all this change had happened when I was a teenager, then things they have been different, but then again I wouldn't have had my hubby and children and I would do my whole life again even the depressed and really dark times to get my hubby and children because I wouldn't want to be without them even thought they do my head in sometimes, which is just life, but they are worth going though all the really tough and sh1tty times as they are my world

Haha, I agree. I cook OK if I have a cookbook but without one I'm lost. I'd probably write a book about living as sustainably as possible, or something liek that. Or maybe I'd write some sort of children's fantasy book - those are always so much fun!

Yes Anne, one of the first things I learned back in writing workshop many years ago. So I did write what I knew. To begin with I created a short novel based around my life as an adolescent who went into the music business. I used incidents that originally happened to me. There were some very exciting and passionate moments of the "Mrs. Robinson" type (The old Dustin Hoffman movie?). And then the female audiences more my own age... Wow! I couldn't really understand why they would want to idolise little old me though, as I could only play the keyboards and sing some harmonies . Anyway, in my writing, I fictionalized my experiences, exaggerating in places.. I took a chapter each week to my writing class and enjoyed every minute of the task.
I also know about life in the Welsh Valleys where I used to work in various venues, so my next effort was about a fictional Welsh couple who got into all sorts of difficulties. For inspiration, I used old local newspaper stories, particualarly the humourous ones. It was great fun to share and to listen to other writers who were all embellishing their own life experiences. _Derek

Hi again.. Actually, the story of the couple runs to around 40,000 words, so I wouldn't really know where to start, but brielfy, there are several stories that are humourous. The first story kicks off with them in a small grocery store that they own but the local council is going to redevelop the area which means that they have to move their business to another town. The don't really want to do this and hold out whilst all the road and other buildings are being reduced to rubble. By the end of the first chapter, they agree to move and cannot understand why they didn't do it before because their relocation is good. _Derek

Mine would be sort of autobiographical in that it would show what
a person of my age three years ago felt when her son lost his job, we got behind on our rent and thus of course evicted. From being born on a farm in S outh /Dakota and a happy childhood, to being reitired and feeling happy , to finding myself where I would never ever have
wanted to be,here in Gold Crest a retirement center. Here because we did not see any alternative three years aqo. both homeless, me with a s mall soc ial security check and my son out of work and money , and no family but ourselves. Quite a rude jolt from a happy life as a middle class citizen to a homeless person in a rather depressing tiresome retirement center. here not because I wanted to be alone with one hundred strangers but because we were out ofr money and here in the USA nobody without money is looked on as being wonderfu l or great but as trash.Perhaps writing this would bring back some happiness not that I cannot make myself happy whereever I am. but I am not here because I ever wanted to be here.
Again I might never write it,still pretty painful as I miss the middle class apt. live I was torn o ut of.

Now's the time to write it, Hatley. With the economy how it is and the public surge of disdain for money-based thinking, it'd sell like the proverbial hot cakes.
(And when sales skyrocketed, you could buy a dozen apartments!)

I do include the Llamas in my discussions every once in a while. First thing to learn about these wonderful animals is that they have be part of the human family for over 5000 years. They are the smartest of the herd animals with the exception of elephants. Like elephants they have fantastic memories. They are sight animals and recognize people and other animals by sight. Hubby always wears the same hat around the llamas but if he changes it they all treat him like a stranger until he calls them each by name. All in all they are wonderful animals to live around.

I would love to be able to write about Christian nonfiction. Or a devotional. Or a collection of short stories. Or something similar to Chicken Soup for the Soul. :)
I'd love to write mock diaries. Or something that's about life. I'm not really sure; I know I want to write a book, but there's nothing forming in my heart yet; though, these are the things that I would love to write on. :)

I'd buy yours! I'm terrible at quick, cheap recipes but they're the kind I need.
Mine's about part-time freelance writing. Should be published in a couple of weeks (if the proof copy ever arrives).
I'd really like to publish a novel, though. Much cooler than non-fiction but SOOOOOOO much harder to write!

For me it's the other way around. I can't write if I don't think about it beforehand. Research, planning, putting the scenes in order, whatever - if I wrote before thinking I'd produce hundreds of thousands of words, but they'd make very little sense.
To each his own. I know some writers who can do that - they sit down, start writing and everything just sort of slots into place. I'm not one of those people, unfortunately.

Actually, I'm just focusing on the verb "write" when you said fiction is "harder to write". Often, what writers say about what's hard in "writing" is really more about thinking and planning.
Anyway, I'm just reminded of the movie "Finding Forrester" where the character of Sean Connery (who was an author) said that "Writing comes first. Thinking comes later." I reflected on this insight and found that I think too much when I'm writing pieces for publication. I mix the two activities when I should only be doing one.
Hopefully, I'll be able to prove Forrester's theory one of these days with a story of my own.

Yes I have embroidered many quilts. One twin size one years ago for my daughter which took 2 years, and then I made many baby quilts that were embroidered.
Quick and easy recipes is a very popular category. It is great to get recipes from others.
Have a nice day.

Procrastination Anne
I listened to this woman talk about her book. She wrote one on organization. It is out there, I think it is called, Organization from the inside out. What was interesting to me was that she was not an authority in the beginning but a discoverer which motivated her to write the book. She said she had a very important event (a friends wedding) to go to and was late because she lost her keys in her apartment. She talked about walking around parking lots all the time looking for her car because she lost it (one without the key beeper). She was disorganized in her mind too which is not a good way to be if you want to write a book. But she did it.

A lot of people say, they are going to write a book but they go through their entire life and don't do it. It has never been easier to get your work published with all the marvelous internet technology available now. The hardest part is making a start but you have to do it, or you will never get there. It took me a year to write my book and it was a terrible awful chore but I got through it by writing a small amount for two hours every day and doing it little by little, so I did not have to do a whole book at once..it is the small successful activities each day that lead to completing the big goal of finishing the book. I would urge everybody to have a go at writing their book, it won't cost you anything to publish it and who knows, you might sell a lot of copies.....

I've just published my book on Lulu.com, It's about the little patterns I found in the UK lotto data and the low cost betting strategies I use to bet on the hot picks games (putting lotto bets on is something I know a little about).I won £45 a few weeks back when I used a bet that cost £7. My book is not called 'how to win the lotto', it is called 'UK Lotto patterns and how to bet on them', so it does not guarantee that you will win shed loads of money and be able to go and live on an island, but rather is aimed at people who like to bet on the pick one, pick two and pick three number hot picks games (win £5, £40 or £450) and are bored using house and birthday numbers. I have used a pen name, as in the olden days, you could get thrown in jail for writing a book if somebody didn't like it.

Mine would be about I don't know lol. I am dealing with a very vocal, sensitive, pre-teen who has been very rebellious lately. My book would talk about her temper tantrums and mood swings and the strategies I use to discipline her. Right now I am clueless on what to do but hopefully while writing the book I can figure it out. It would be about my journey in dealing with this situation. Actually, I think I will attempt this! Thanks for the great idea!!

Yes, that is the plan anyway! I hope to start writing soon. I am working on devotionals for those who are staying for long times in the hospital now. I am still blogging a lot too...so for now it will have to wait. But very soon I hope I find my thoughts, settle my emotions and can find time to write! thanx...

I think if you are writing a non-fiction book you really need to know your subject. I'm sure we've all checked out books and realised the author has jumped some bandwagon (frugal books are often victims of this) and just cobbled stuff together and doesn't really know their subject.
When it comes to fiction, you might have to research some details but you don't have to know the subject and in some cases you can't - some fantasy, sci-fi and horror books.
That said, I'm really picky about historical fiction and find it hard to enjoy books that focus on periods of history I know a lot about because if they get some basic, important details wrong I know they really don't know the period. I've also found it is not the better writers who do this. When they have ignored the real history they are often writing romance or bad detective fiction in an "historic setting" rather than really writing an historical novel.

"how a dysfunctional childhood screws you up"
What a brilliant counterpoint that would be to all those US-made "feel-good" movies about how dysfunctional families are really so lovely, deep down. I'd watch it!!

I think the problem would be that hollywood likes a happy ending based on reconcilliation and forgiveness - not one where you break off all contact with most of your family and leave them to continue to tear each other apart because that's what they seem to enjoy doing...

Hi Anne.
I think my book would be sad, because almost all my life there is something that I have to struggle with: first hunger and poverty, later leaving my own country for better life, loneliness, my disability, my mother illness and now my dog is very very sick. Well I have no idea who would like to read book about being sad. What you think?

I think you have right. I write some stuff however I have never publish anything ( except some articles on triond). I like to create new characters but I don't like place myself in the story. I always believe that people don't want to read about someone's life ( I mean real person's life not a character). And I don't think so I could describe what I have been through. Anyway I enjoy writing but not about me.

Hi koperty
This is not a book to make people feel happy. It will be sad. Just because it is sad does not mean it will be unread. It means people looking for a happy book will not be interested but people looking for answers will be. Not everyone experiences what you have experienced or understands what is going on within you.
To make an excellent book however might mean breaking down any barriers that would inhibit disclosure. People will want to identify and understand and live out and take on the role the person in the book which I will assume will be a character you invent or yourself in person depending on how you want to write your book. The diary of Anne Frank (ending) was a sad book but in it is a wealth of emotions and passion for life.

Well, I would write a book on fitness. Though we all know "health is wealth", but few of us actually realize it until we are on the verge of losing it. I would write how we must make children aware of their health since their childhood, and how exercise should be a part of their daily routine. I would mention some fun and refreshing exercises too.
