Finally running again - after a broken knee cap!

I was disgusted that I had to set out about 10 weeks. I was running and fell and my knee hit the curb. I honestly thought it was minor. I looked at the blood running down my leg and into my shoe and tried to decide if I should finish my run or head back to my house! I kept trying to run on it because I was going to do the Chicago half marathon. The pain got too sharp and I finally went to xray it and there was a tiny sliver sticking out!I had to wear a brace for about 8 more weeks by then. I am finally running again and have been in two 5Ks since then. I placed in my age category in both of them! NOt too shabby!! Did you have any injuries this season?

I am sorry to hear that you got your knee cap broken .You surely had a hard time of it.You are really a person of strong character ,now you are running again.I hope that you will get good results in the Chicago half marathon. By the way, how is your son?

I did not get to do the half marathon in Chicago. But I am up and running again now. I've only done a couple of 5Ks post injury so far.. but many more planned for sure!! My son is doing well (thanks for asking) He is progressing very slowly still, but he is awake most of the day and is eating two times a day. He is also moving around a lot more. It's slow - but still progressing!

I am glad that your son is on the mend and you are up and running again. However You have to take some time to return to normal.I think you will be able to take part in the half marathon of 21.0975 km one day.

I don't have any injury this time. I'm really afraid to have one. I don't want to run or do things which can cause injury because I don't want to hurt myself. It really pains me to see blood running out from my body. Hope you'll get well soon. Have a nice day mylotting.

Yes, I was not too happy when I saw blood running everywhere! I really needed about 4 or 5 stitches at least but didn't go to the dr. I missed the Chicago half marathon. I will not race again until February I think. I might try to find one in January though. My son is progressing quite nicely really. It is still very slow - but he is making some good progress - awake most of the time now. thank you for asking!

I am sorry to hear about your injury as I know how much you love your running. I am glad to hear that you are doing well in your return to the sport though. Straight back to the top eh. Well done! I have not had any injuries for a long time thankfully. I get some pain in my left knee (which had torn cartilage removed in 1998) from time to time, but it does not restrict me too much. I do choose however to only run barefoot on soft surfaces these days though like grass sporting fields or the beach.

Yes, I was very upset to have to sit out for awhile since I really love running. But I am rebounding nicely for an old lady! lol!

I am happy for you that you are feeling ok now, good luck But i just wanna say that most of the time the bone need a lot of time to recover and the muscles need only few weeks, so try to do short runs so your bone will grow..

You welcome :) Try to sleep a lot, at least more that 6 hours per day, and eat food with calcium like cheese and stuff And try to load a bit on you weak lag, but don't use you strong leg to much so you will not overuse injury

Good to know that you are okay now after that incident. Good thing i wasn't really into running or ill get more injury worst that you got. :-) I am so blessed that me and my family did not have injuries like what you got. Careful next time mac. It's hard to compete when you know you are from an injury.

Yes, it was difficult to sit out 10 weeks when I really wanted to be running. But I did it because I certainly didn't want my knee to get into worse shape and lose running altogether! I am glad it was not a worse break too. That would have been devestating!

Hi macdingolinger grt to hear you are up and running again. I have not had any injuries recently but had a horrible cruciate ligament tear in my knee when I was playing basketball 2 years back.. It was a horrible injury and was on crutches for months and was dying to get back. Anyways I have had no issues now and still play and keep running. Wishing you good health .. CheerS :)

Oh yeah, I am being very careful now! lol!I am going slowly and also making sure that I lift my feet better. I am blaming it on my new shoes. But I am seriously taking it easy and being very careful!

Hi Mac! The only injury I have had this year was when I tripped over my own feet during the stupid 50 yard dash at the Turkey Trot on thanksgiving and about skidded and face planted on the asphault in the parking lot. I scraped my elbow, my knee, and got a huge bruise on my left hip when I landed. The next day I felt like I'd been run over by a semi. The turkey trot itself was excellent though, it was a 5K and I placed first for my age group and one of the top women overall. I joined some challenges via dailymile and also the 12athon to try and stay motivated. It's been super cold and running outside in cold and windy conditions is a challenge just in itself lol. I might sign up to run a 10K next month, my next big race isn't until late april (SoCal Ragnar).

I try to run a race a month but do not have one planned for January yet. I have one set for February, and maybe two for March and then another half in April. I have actually met some running friends and that makes it more interesting! Sorry you face planted... I know the feeling - a huge truck! I was black and blue all over too...and congrats!!!

Yes but only minor. There is a lot of info out there on ACL injury prevention. I know it was not your issue but none the less these excercises are great for strengthening the muscles around your knee and your core.

Yeah, not quite sure exactly what happened. It was so fast I literally didn't have time to close my eyes.. I could see the nearby traffic the whole time. Didn't even have time to put out my hands. I had bruses all over!
