I have been with the company for four years and 10 months, from then on I never ask for any salary increase, I never had the guts and courage to ask my boss about it. Now that I have higher responsibility I've been thinking maybe it's about time to ask for a salary increase. I've been meaning to ask my boss about it but never had the courage to do so. I know that somehow I was able to help the company in my own ways. I have my accomplishment reports to support that, but I'm still hesitant to do so.
Any suggestions how to approach my boss for a salary increase request?

I would only consider asking for a raise if I am ready to quit the job.
Now, I'm not saying when you "want" to quit the job, but only if you are ready to accept quitting the job because they will not give you a raise.
If you ask for a raise, and he refuses, and you don't do anything... that could be a sign to him that you won't leave. And if you won't leave... why give you a raise?
The other part is, is the job you are doing, worth more than you are being paid?
See sometimes the reason you don't get a raise is because the job isn't worth paying more.
Like here in the US, working at a fast food restaurant. You can work at McDonalds for 20 years and never get a raise. Why? Because flipping burgers isn't worth paying more.
Only you can find out if your job is worth more. Are other people paid more? Do they give out raises to others?
Ultimately a better idea is to see if there is another position that you can do in the company, that pays more money. See if you can get promoted to a better position.

Funny thing is I got promoted and was only given a very minimal increase in my salary. Most of my co-workers resigned already because of this issue regarding salary increase. And I think It's time that I also do the same. I'm actually looking for a better job with a much better benefits. I'm ok to start as a minimum wage earner as long as I get a salary increase yearly, not like this. Last salary increase that I received was 3 years ago.

There is no magic way to do it. The best way to do it is to just go to the boss and explain to him that you now have more responsibility and you would like him to consider an increase in pay for you. It's not hard to do. I know you might be nervous, but there's nothing to be afraid of. Just muster up the courage to go in there and ask. Whats the worst he could say? No? So, don't worry.

Dear If you are working for some Pvt or Limited company their is no need to demand for increase in wage, as per company rules they have to increase their worker wage annually, off course some gain much benefit and some may not gain to much, but that does not mean that they gain nothing.
Now in your question regarding increase in salary if you have such experience in field you may apply for some company or post your resume or c.v. in some site, if better opportunity come just said your employer i have better opportunity and if he say you never go to any where or any new company, ask for increase in salary, its depend upon your capability if they thing the work you have perform excellent they my increase your salary and you have not to go any where.

Hello abmacasinag,
I remember once i joined a company and later on i got to know that employees there in that company did not get salary increaments from last 4~5 years. So from that day only started searching job and really i got a new job with in 3 months.Since then i have never worked in a company where there is no annual increaments.Presently i have been working with an organisation where we do get minimum of 12% increaments annually.
I think in your case too you must start searching a new job because this time if anyhow you get an increament too after talking to your employer then also there is no gaurantee if you will get it again soon.

Not entirely sure how it works but in all the companies I have been with, an annual increase in salary is assured. This is indicated in the Job Offer that I received when I joined the company. Of course, the amount will be based on the performance review that will be conducted by the boss and the HR head. I highly suggest that you consult your JO papers. If you have none, your colleagues will surely provide you in one way or another, valuable information on how to deal with this. Good luck :)

In my 19 years of working experience I have never experienced asking for a salary increase from my employer. What I do is to work hard and prove to them that I am capable of handling responsible jobs and other tasks that are beyond my profession as an accountant.
Through that, I gained my employer's trust and confidence. Along with that comes also a higher pay. Just prove your worth and your dedication. It pays when you do.
