Why is it that American film makers are always picking disasters..

I mean in India we hardly have horror movies. We also rarely have a movie like Towering Inferno, and all those disaster stuff. I find American films concentrate a lot on something that is going to be bad and then bring in a protagonist to rescue. Love takes a backseat in these movies unlike in our movies where the hero and heroine get to do some dances and sing songs that are neither Indian nor Western anymore. But coming back to my query..why are so many American movies focused on something bad? We had one - burning train - it was a star studded film - failed at box office so we are forced to watch it every second week. Difference in tastes?

We always want to see/experience something different, in USA life is easy and they have patience and happiness in their life. Here in India the struggling middle/lower class experiences all types of problems and that's why they don't want to watch a movie to experience the same thing again but in USA or in any other developed country, it's just opposite.

So when the real problem comes they would be immune to that pain!!! Right?

I am not quite sure. But I think that there are really many kinds of movies in America. And the disaster movies are just one of them. Perhaps it needs a nice special effect so that you can feel the disaster. And people like watching the special effect. It is one important element for the commerical movie. It is likely to sell well. I love China

It could be the special effect obsession. I mean when we were young circus was supposed to be a great entertainer. But they had to include some new item to draw us again each time they come to our town. So its something like that I suppose. Oh so you love China. :) And a lot of Chinese movies are about martial artis. :)

That's a very good point. We in the West seem to love a good disaster whilst you tend to emphasise the twists and turns of love and desire. Bollywood is popular here in Britain and not just amongst the Asian community. When a non-violent western film is made people often say what a refreshing change it makes. Perhaps we are used to being fed a diet of horror and gore and don't expect anything else.

I dont say American movies are not interesting. But I dont like scientific fiction, and too much of horror or disaster. It gets boring. Because we are constantly facing the Bollywood stuff, even that gets boring. I was watching a rerun of a movie that was hit at the box office a couple of years ago. I found it so painful to watch it. Shows that once the novelty wears off, it is not worth watching again.

They like to create movies like that because they wanted to show that they are greatest in anything and they are superb in solving any problems in and out of the country in real life.(^^) Look at the background of the movies. It seems that in such movies the main location for the disaster to take place will be their main city. They will showed how they solved the problem and be the hero of the world. If we watched it carefully there always hidden message in it but I don't want to discuss about it. Simply say that they like to be the one and only hero for everything~(^^)

May be ..or may be it is because they simply have no other goals to look forward to and therefore they are finding a way to keep that adrinalin moving. Lots of weird movies..matrix, lethal weapon, die hard, misson impossible.

All about technologies and adventures~ while the local movies are all above love theme.hehe... If they want me to choose between the local movies andd hollywood I will choose the hollywood not because of the propaganda or the message they want to send to the viewers but they offer varies and different themes of story from fiction to non-fictions. But between hollywood and other Asian country movies I will choose Asian movies like from Japan. The story packed and filled with humanity and good values depends on the story respectively.(^^)

I think the reason is more because of Hollywood. Hollywood makes only what the producers think will sell. As long as disaster movies are making money that is what they will continue making. Once they stop making money then they'll go to the next thing. Games are the same way. Actually, I think that the content in games is driving movie production to some extent. As long as the top-selling games are as violent as they are, I think, producers trying to target that age market are going to follow that trend. I wish for more positivity too ... but not too much to the point that there will be no conflict at all. I'm not really into those sort of movies. Hopefully that doesn't say too much about my tastes.

Horror movie of India suck. Most of the horror stories keep rotating round a story of a person dying, becoming a ghost and seeking for a revenge. When will these movie directors learn that only ghosts aren't the only thing left to scare people.

absolutely we used to have movies with lots of music and dancing, now we don't when the economic times were bad and then the second world war, we had lots of fluffy musicals, oh, we had other kinds of movies too, but we had a lot of the musicals then, but in the 1970's when the economy was generally pretty good, we started on disaster movies... so, generally speaking, in the hollywood, if things are going bad, make happy movies, if things are going good, make disaster movies... Now, the big hits are action adventure and super hero movies like Pirates and Batman... probably a sign of the times...

Actually recently I saw a couple movies..dont remember the name of the movie but in one there was this heavenly princess who had a step mother, and who came down to earth and found earth to be a pleasant place, and her prince came behind her and her step mother tried to kill her...the story had so many songs in it. Absolutely divine. I am not great one for romance ..no I prefer detective serials or law serials. But this one was a refreshing change from the normal fare. May be war and economic times have something to say. But why not in the movies of other countries.

Movies are a Big subject. I think there is a shortage of Good writers so they pick anything that might make a story. Also remember the audience movies are made for. Movie theaters are frequented by the youngest of adults and teens. So many times it's all about the special effects and flash. It would be so wonderful if movies came with an actual PLOT. I guess that takes work. Since they can make money with the flash, they are lazy to make a REAL Picture.

But compared to India, there are fewer Americans in their teens! However, you did indicate something..special effect and flash. While I do watch plenty of those movies, they dont make an imprint on my mind like some of the oldies did. Problem is we Indians suddenly believe that everything American must be right.

America used to be like that. Go find some old movies from the 40s 50s and 60s, and you'll see dance routines, and love stories, and all kinds of stuff. America has largely lost all it's standards, and marriage has become a rather unimportant side note to America life. Today most of so-called romantic movies, involve some sl*tty girl, running around with various promiscuous guys, until accidentally becoming pregnant, and trying to figure out which one is the father. Or in many cases, it's about a married couple, or several married couples, all cheating on each other, and breaking up one marriage, to go marry someone else, and do the routine all over. Why? Because this unfortunately is the new normal here in America. Hopefully the reason you do not see 'romance movies' from America is because your culture has higher standards still, and those types of movies don't play well in India.

Oh but there are good movies. I meant in general. I liked quite a few recent American movies as well. I think only when you are knee deep in that culture do you realize its flaws and high standards. As of now, I have to admit that what started as our culture was good just like all cultures. It got embroiled in a whole lot of nonsense because of selfish interpretations and tweaking. So what is being followed is neither here or there. Finally, we are looking at other cultures and happily adopting it because we are now well read and well informed to understand the inconsistencies and illogics in our culture. However, what we should be doing is removing these inconsistencies and illogics to reach the original standards and tweak them enough to fit the contemporary life style so that everybody is happy. That is what is not happening. As of now, yes, I am disturbed because we are following the footsteps of Americans. An average Indian has an extremely high opinion about an American because by default all Americans are rich according to him or her. They've closed their eyes to other factors in your society. It would be alright if the end result was good. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be, does it?

You really got to know your audience and American people in general are drawn to disasters. Otherwise that parasitic life form known as the American media would not be around to the extent that is. Granted, I do think that we get enough bad times, disaster, and horror in the real world. And often times, the news is more horrifying that any movie. Yet, that's what draws the money for this audience. I guess it is a sense of trainwreck potential. Just something that is horrifying, something that you cannot look away from in any way whatsoever. I think that different countries, something will play different. I think that it is mostly cultural thing myself. We are more drawn to disaster.

Funny dont you think. We are same species. But popular themes in American movies are different from what may be in the UK, Canada, and even Australia, leave alone Eastern countries and other European countries. Why is it that American audience wants such movies?

You said it the best so far. Superhero, batman, spiderman..they want heroes ..they want to see heroes. But I would presume such things came during the period around World War I and World War II. Are we now having wars to fuel that need generated by those two wars? Makes me wonder. We dont have as many movies on wars, operations in wars, or catastrophes, or gang robberies, or even psychopaths. Nor as many serials on such things. Though I find our stuff a bit hard to digest, I feel thankful that it is still around because at least it is not making me fear something.

I think American film maker wanted to show the worst thing that is possible going to happen in the future as described is some of their catastrophic movies. I find enjoying American movies that tell about facts, stories in the future. They have also many great movies that tell about the past. Mostly, their movies are based on true story and many movies also tell the life in the future which is greatly to be watched or seen.

I think always thinking about and watching catastrophes must make nerves taut and such people can become tense, especially if they do not have a large and loving family to return to at the end of the show. Family diverts our mind and helps us forget such things.

Different people have different interests. There are also different ways to relax or to have fun. For some it's by watching comics, to others animé and an other group likes to watch a horror. I don't think it's typical American, people all over the world have different taste. I only think they are more willing to make movies like that. To listen to what the audience does like and to take the risk not everybody is watching that movie.

It's not the difference in taste. But they know that such disasters movies would have good sales and views. People like something these stuff because they normally have very beautiful and realistic graphics, it also post some questions in people's mind about disasters. At the same time, these movies normally have nice storyline which has the very exciting climax and some resolution. I like to watch these types of movies such as independence day, deep impact, the day after tomorrow etc. I don't mean that the Indian movies which is usually about love, some nice dancing and love happens etc are not interesting. I love those movies as well. I can say that both are interesting, just that disasters sounds more catchy.

Yeah with graphics options that seem to be a child's canvas. Everybody trying to show something different. Yes there is storyline - most of the time. But if we were to sit down and classify, you would find the likes of Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Mission Impossible outnumber the realistic stuff like Erin Berkovich, and Working Girl. The later are far easier to relate with. You like Indian movies? Honestly, I have yet to see a single couple in love break into those songs and run behind those trees. I have tough time digesting that. But I am partial to those catchy numbers.

I guess its just a style. For example, in music, in some cultures, the music videos tend to be fun and exciting with lots of dancing, in other cultures there are very little dancing yet the song is made to be for dancing. Film makers tend to have ideas and targets that what their culture enjoys. It also gets very risky when they try something new that their culture hasn't been exposed to. But usually if its a hit, it will lead to success no matter if the culture hasn't experienced anything like it before. It as you can say sparked interests as it has never been done. In north america, it seems like we enjoy thriller, high octane, action packed movies. I mean they tend to be really popular especially when they have a really popular action star in it. Similarly, in countries like China for example, they enjoy having comedy in their films, not ha ha ha belly laughing comedy, but goofy comedy that always gets people smiling. For example, in legend of the fist: return of Chen zen, it was full of action, yet their was many comedy bits in the film. So yes I guess its just different tastes, as every culture is different, but every culture can also be adaptive in trying something new, which can be a risk but also offer great rewards. Cheers!

I too like goofy comedy - Jackie Chan variety. :) And yes they are full of action as well. But somewhere in mind they dont leave you as stressed out as you would be if you watched a Steven Segal movie or Misson Impossible. I cant say it is culture. I think people are in it only to make monies. People to have other tastes you know. The Practice - the program on law would not be as successful if people didnt want to use their brains. I think tastes can be cultivated, and modified. If we continue to expose generations to those thrillers, they would soon reach a level when they want it in real life, that adrinalin and stuff. Its just like you constantly hear bad words, and those words become part of your language.
