Sneeze

I had a woman come into my office and sneeze in front of me without grabbing the tissues or Kleenex that are present in my office. I must admit that I flinched as she sneezed into her elbow. I offered her some Kleenex and did express a little confusion about her behavior... as I had seen people cover their mouth and nose with their hands, tissues, etc. She set me straight. She said that she worked at a hospital and was told to sneeze into her elbow rather than using her hands. I guess that makes sense in a hospital setting as maintaining great hand washing and hand hygiene care is important... But I can't imagine doing it or the thought of being hugged by someone who has been sneezing into his or her elbow. That last thought is rather gross. What do you do? I still must admit that I like Kleenex and other paper tissues best, probably as that is what I grew up with. I don't think I will be sneezing into my elbow any time soon.

Depends on if it's a spur of the moment thing. If the sneeze is coming too quickly to grab a kleenex, I always use my hands XD But yes.. Hands are preferred if no other implement is available.

Thank goodness for the Kleenex! Here's hoping you have hand sanitizing soap handy and that no one comes up to shake your hand after you sneeze. I always wonder how guys deal with that situation? Do you tell the person, "Sorry, I can't shake your hand as I just sneezed?" or do you just shake hands anyway? Wondering what is standard operating procedure for most men, not what you do as I do not want to have you incriminate yourself. :) Thanks for your response.

Well let's see. I have two answers for that! I tend to see a lot of the same people everyday. So my first answer is, Procedure #1 *Sneeze into hand* *Here comes person I dislike* *Guy offers handshake* *Proceed to shake hand..for an extended period of time* Procedure #2 *Sneeze into hand* *Here comes guy I'm alright with* *Immediately make a discreet attempt to wipe hands on pants thoroughly as possible before shaking hands* And yes, I usually have some form of sanitizer ready. Isn't that the trend nowadays?

Ah, I forgot the wipe hands with pants routine... I had seen it... didn't realize it was so popular. You mean guys really make that decision about what to do based on whether or not they like the guy? I thought it was mostly habit. I am glad you use the sanitizer! :

When we go to our small group meetings there are times when the same things happen there some times. Some don't try to cover at all, I am glad to know by using your elbow it's good hygiene. As I think about this, not all time my hands are clean to use at that time. When it's time to sneeze you can't stop to clean your hands. I don't hug, so I am ok with this elbow covering my nose. I just try it and I like it. I still will keep my handkerchief and tissues. Your on hand con spread germs. What do you think?

Hello... I agree with you... It was gross... It was kind of discourteous too... She must have used tissue or something to cover her mouth.. I mean, one can't sneeze in your face... That is so rude and improper...

The one who sneezed without grabbing anything at all or sneezing into her elbow either was indeed exhibiting gross behavior. The one who sneezed into her elbow was actually doing something that she had been taught to do in a hospital as way to avoid passing on infections. The one who sneezed without grabbing anything later told me she just had allergies but I was still not happy with the behavior. Luckily neither really sneezed in my face. That would have been bad. They were though in my small office. Thanks for commenting.

hi whiteheron I agree that its best to grab a Kleenex when you sneeze but if you have to use your hands do go wash them with hot soapy water.I fail to see how sneezing into your elbow is less germy than your hands.I would suggest the person also go wash her elbow instead of sharing her germs with others. Its cold and flu season and we all should be practicing washing our hands well after all sneezes.

I always sneeze into my shirt. Sounds disgusting I know but it is actually more hygienic as well. Germs are passed onto so many surfaces from coughs and sneezes on hands. So I always think of others before I sneeze or cough. Just because I am sick doesn't mean I have to get everyone else sick to.

All I can say is I really hope you wash that shirt a lot. Thanks for covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough... That is a polite and kind thing to do.

Yes I do! LOL if I am sick I will be thoughtful of others. But as soon as I get home the shirt goes in the hamper. Then in the shower I go!

Glad that that shirt goes into the hamper quickly. And that you take a shower too... Ah it is nice to be able to get clean and to get one's clothing clean too. There are some people for whom that is difficult.

I usually would sneeze on a tissue that i always have in my pants' pocket. But if it is inevitable that i don't have any, i would usually cup my mouth with my hands whenever i sneeze. Then , i would wipe my hand with a tissue and wash my hands.

stowyk-- I must say, I really did wish she did use the tissues provided but at least she did use her elbow and did do her best to protect me against her germs. There was one other person who came into my office and sneezed twice without taking the Kleenex offered to her and did not really cover her mouth adequately with her hand either... That was gross.

Covering our mouth when we sneeze is a good manner. If tissue is not available, then we can us our hands to cover our mouth when we sneeze. Then, you can wash it right away after that, or if you have a hand sanitizer in the bag, you can use it instead and wipe it with a paper, if there's no tissue around.

Well, it's different people with different view. I think she did the right thing. You sneeze either into elbow or into tissues or Kleenex. But since she's not in hospital, I think she should grab a tissue or Kleenex. It might be her habits then. I would use a tissue by the way.

I sneeze into my shoulder. There is hardly time to grab a tissue every time I sneeze, and at my job I can't simply leave to wash my hands every time I sneeze, so its more hygienic for me to sneeze into my sleeve than into my hands that will be touching customer's things. Unless I'm really snotty. If I have a cold and a lot of mucus I try to keep a tissue to sneeze into, though sneezes do happen so suddenly.

Ah so it is into the shoulder and not into the elbow that you prefer. You must have a good and flexible neck... I don't think I can do that without a lot of effort. I am glad that you are considerate of your consumers and do take precautions. Here's hoping you stay well and free of snottiness.

Hi! I too sneeze into my elbow, it will be cleaner when compare to sneeze into your hand or any kind of tissues paper. Hand is the most easy part to spreading viruses where hand is the part that make the most contact with anything, even thought if you did not shake hand with someone, but remember, if she sneeze into her hand or tissues paper, her hand still contaminated with some viruses and when she touches something like computer, chair or table, other will get infected easier, where as elbow is the most less contact part and we can still wash it later without spreading the virus.

I agree with you I think that's gross & I also agree that I wouldn't want someone who who just sneezed into their elbow to hug me afterward. I always use a tissue & if I can't immediately wash my hands then I will take out my little bottle of Germ-X & pour some of that into my hands so it kills the germs.

Good thing that you have that Germ-x as some people say that the Kleenex doesn't trap all of the germs and some do go on the hands... Sorry that I brought up this topic now...

I usually sneeze on my hand if there's no time to grab a tissues, but one of the responder said the problem when using hand is when we have to shake other people's hand after that, so maybe i start to use my left hand for covering my sneeze from now, so when i shake other people's hand they won't feel uncomfortable.

Yeah, it's quite a disturbing thought that someone's germs might cling to you. But I reckon that's better than sneezing in your hands. It's even more gross when people just outwardly sneeze into the air and you can see all the wet particles fly in the air! Tissue is good but sometimes you just can't beat a sneeze. A sneeze is very unexpected and you're just not fast enough to dig into your bag or pockets, find some tissues and then sneeze into it. Sometimes I know it's coming and I grab out my tissue but sometimes I'm just too slow So I just resort to sneezing into my hands. My sneezes tend to be pretty big and loud, I get pretty embarrassed. I've been my friends sneeze into their hands and then not wiping their hands with anything, they just continue touching other things and they even touched me with their hands! So I guess it's better to sneeze into your elbow, what are the chances that you might hug someone compared to the chances of touching things with your hands?

I must say, I hate it when people do not grab a tissue in my office and just sneeze into the air... Yet we have all had times when we have not been able to get to the tissue quick enough. You are quite right. And I am beginning to think that the elbow move might be okay... probably better than the just sneezing into hand and wiping it on pants move that many men do. My sneezes are loud too... and rather shocking.
