Do you buy everything new?

Germany

I remember that already during my childhood existed secondhand shops in my neighbourhood where I grew up (which was in another country than I am now). Now, caused by the economical crisis, there are coming up secondhand shops around where I am living now. Some items offered by those shops are really nice and usefull. Do you also buy in those kind of shops? Or do you buy everything new?

Yes, I always buy everything new. I have never bought second hand things in second hand shops. Moreover, I am not fond of second hand.

Yeah, I knew. It's maybe because I was used to get new present or stuff on Christmas time. You knew most of my stuff I bought long ago and they are still wearable. I didn't throw because of it and I prefer using or wearing than buying second hands. I will buy new things if the old one was ripen out or broken. Thank you

I like buying second hand things. sometimes, like with furniture, second hand things are better than new. new furniture is really poor quality and falls apart very quickly. whearas if you buy second hand furniture, it's already lasted one person, so it will probably last you too. I buy second hand clothes if they are in good condition and I like them. what's even better is that you have something that's not in all the shops at that point in time. I mostly buy books new, just because I tend to read books over and over again, and the feeling of a new book is very nice. but I do buy books if they're ones I wouldn't really want to pay full price for, but would like to read them. absolutely nothing wrong with second hand things if they're in good condition. but I wouldn't buy second hand pants. that would be a bit much.

Further books, I remember I've bought one published in 1954 and a magazine published in 1976, they were very interesting and helpful and I wouldn't have got them in a normal store.

Practically there are those items that are second hands yet still useful. They may vary from household items to clothing. I sometimes buy second hand items if I find them useful and still in working condition. You can certainly save since the price is low. But of course you should also be careful most especially on appliances knowing that they may not last that long.

That's right, we have to be carefull, but the same problems happen sometimes with new items in a normal store. We always should check up everything.

We do shop second hand shops and garage sales but I am very picky about what I pick up there. I only buy items with tags still on or that are obviously still in very good condition. It is surprising how many people donate to these places with items never used. I actually had to purchase whole new wardrobes for my family (we where badly flooded and lost everything) and I spent $200 dollars to cloth six people and did not buy one item at the local charity shop that didn't have a tag still on it. They where good brands too. Really nice items too.

I don't buy everything new. I usually buy second hand gadgets when I think the brand new price is too expensive. I'm into photography and most brand new lenses are very expensive. The used lenses are usually a lot cheaper and still get the same results as the new one. So in this case I rarely buy new lenses.

I don't believe in buying most things new if I can help it. A lot of the things in my apartment have come from thrift stores. I don't think it makes sense to pay full retail price for something when you can find it gently used at a thrift shop or secondhand store for much less. I have a beautiful oak table with a glass top in my kitchen, a very sturdy little oak entertainment center that I've turned into a microwave stand/storage for my small kitchen appliances, and a lovely bookshelf that all came from the Goodwill store down the street. I decided I was tired of the blue and silver Christmas ornaments I've been using for the past 7-8 years and replaced them with brand new ornaments that someone had donated to the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. If I'd bought them at a regular retail store I would've paid about $30-40 for them, but I got them all for about $5. I've also found several nice seasonal knick-knacks. A lot of my daughter's clothes have come from thrift stores, too. I've found lots of pretty little dresses for her for a couple dollars each. Many of them have still had the tags attached. Kids grow pretty quickly, so it's very easy to find gently-used clothes that look like they've barely been worn. I probably wouldn't have bought any of them if I had to pay the full price, since they normally sell for around $30-40 each in the department stores. Of course, there are some things that I simply will not buy secondhand. Underwear is a big no-go for me. I honestly have no idea why the thrift stores even accept such personal items as donations. It totally grosses me out. I won't do upholstered furniture, either. It's too difficult to clean properly. I pass on most electronics... the big exception to that is photography-related things like cameras, lenses, and darkroom equipment.

That's a great way to safe money getting the items we need or wish and most of them near to new. Otherwise, we sometimes help even people who use these kind of stores to sell some of their properties to recover a bit of money they need or even for donations for a church or community. I love those kind of stores. Thanks for sharing.

Yes I always buy everything new. I don't like used things specially if they are too personal like utensils or clothes. But I remember I use to buy second had books in college days, and I don't see any harm in using second books. After all the whole library is full of used books. . Besides books, I have never brought anything that was used before.......but if some people have to buy them due to financial problems , it is OK.......there is no harm in it if the things are in good conditions and also bit cheap. No need to waste money if you can manage and save.

camomile, I am very happy you posting this discussion because I have the same burning question. As for me, I am a committed thrifter. I love browsing through thrift stores. It is especially fun to go to the "Bargain Barn" section of "Goodwill" where I recently bought a beautiful felt hat valued at approximately $80 for only $1. The hat is brand new with original price tags attached. Generally speaking, thrift stores are one of the first places I look when shopping for something I want. Thrifting is a great way to stay within or extend your budget while still being able to afford the things that you desire. Wise people thrift.

Thank you for your post. First of all, with your post I knew new vocabulary, as English isn't my mother tongue. The same as you, I also am a thrifter. It's very necessary nowadays to survive. Generally with the economical crisis, particulary having a family with children....Otherwise, I love second hand shops and markets, there you can find many usefull items and very cheap!

Yes I do buy used. I mainly buy used for myself. My financial situation is a little tight for the time being, so I have to. I also buy lower cost items for myself, and I don't really buy anything that I don't need right now.

Yes, those second hand shops really proliferate here also in the Philippines. In fact, my husband is fond of buying from them, specially those nice jackets, because they are imported. Sometimes, he also buys some imported second hand shoes. But as for me, i only buy from them, for my house wears, like sleeveless tees and some shorts. They are indeed cheap but useful still.

These shops are really usefull, there you can find almost everything most of them very cheap, ones are almost new, others not too much. Everytime I go to one, I feel like on a flea market. Everytime I use one, sometimes I buy something usefull for home or as a present for someone, sometimes I leave some items there to see wether I can sell them. I really love it. Thanks for your post.

I am a very practical person, and I make sure that I get my money's worth every time I buy something. I really do not mind buying second hand things. Even clothes, I buy second hand ones. Putting them into the washing machines would actually clean the dirt off. Unless of course if it were under wears, I would never buy these things. But for things, specially appliances, I really buy them at reasonable prices, comparing them to the quality that I would get as I buy them of course.

I don't mind secondhand stuff! I always buy a few secondhand stuff online on ebay. All the nice branded clothing are way too expensive to buy outside in a store so I'll just pop on ebay, find a nice looking one that looks almost new and bid for that, it still looks like the new thing! Secondhand stuff are way cheaper too! They can be worth it and useful, just like the new one. As long has it's not broken, stained or ruined in some way then i reckon it's all fine to be used. Me and my family usually go to the markets that are outside where people lay their stuff in open space. There are a few secondhand stuff people bring out to sell and they look pretty useful. We bought a game console for like 50 dollars plus a whole heap of games too and we bought it as a gift to my little cousins. It stilled worked and looked just like the new thing, even better as it could play copied games. So there's nothing wrong with a secondhand shop, they actually have stuff which are really good at a cheaper price, even better!

You are right. I also love to buy on ebay, first, because it's international and I already bought items from other countries. Second, because I found there old books which you don't find anymore in a normal store or library. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I love buying new things but I also am buying secondhand items especially if they are still in very good condition. I found this site LIFO.com and just wanted to share it.It is an online home for information and comment on girls interest whether it be the latest Hollywood Gossip or the trendiest fashion.

I dont have a problem buying from used stores. I do window shop though and compare prices. Once i went looking for a pet carrier. i found one for $15. at a thrif store and it was dirty but a new one from walmart for $13. My most recent experience. I was looking for a stove top coffee pot. i found a new stainless steal one at target for $20. Then i looked on ebay. Found the same one new for $30-$40. Used ones for the price of the new one at target. I finally settled for a nice used enamal one from ebay.

You'd be surprised how new a lot of second hand things look. There are a lot of times regarding clothes, where a lot of people only wear them once or twice, before they give them up. A lot of people are rather going to be a bit petty even if there clothes are the slightest bit faded, even if they are still wearable and nice looking by the standards of most. I tend to frequent those kind of shops when I can, to save a few bucks here and there. You'd be surprised how many good deal and rather respectable bits of clothing it would be rather good. The only thing that I really will buy new is electronics (although maybe not the newest brand), as you never know what people put them through until you get them.

when I was smaller my parent would buy at secondhand shops sometimes and they had pretty nice stuff, but now you hardly find any shops like that here anymore and I don't feel the need to search for them for now as most of my clothes I order online anyway, cause styles that have ours shops here I don't like, so yeah I buy everything new now, unless someone hands out some clothes sometimes I'd accept, but that's another story.
