Do you enjoy 3D movies, games, etc?

Hello mylotters! So I bought a nintendo 3ds which has glass-free 3d capabilities. I have never experienced watching 3d movies in theaters so it was really my first time to experience 3d media at its best. The 3d function of the console is really great however I have experienced eye strain and somehow light headache during and sometimes after playing. Then a while ago, I did some researching on the web regarding the effects of 3d to the human body, I have read various articles and some of them claim that based on some scientific studies, it could actually harm you. Though it is still debatable and further studies should be done. Nevertheless, manufacturers of these 3d products etc, do admit that some people might experience mild discomfort when viewing in 3d. Now, I am really thinking of stop using the 3d feature of my nintendo 3ds and just use it in 2d, since I am afraid that I might suffer some unexpected long term effect. That also means that I have no plans of watching 3d movies in theaters or at home. I am really worried and I hope experts come into a solid conclusion whether 3d is harmful or not.

The effects of 3D could varies to each person. For me, i feel my eyes a little stressed and make my eyes feels a little hurt but i guess it is not harmful as long we rest our eyes for 5 to 10 minutes every half or one hour watching it. It is true that the 3D effects make everything looked more great and futuristic and i like it too. But, i think the 3D technology that created now is still not perfect since there can be some side effects after watching them. I hope in the future they can make the 3D technology more perfect so there are no side effects like this anymore.

Thanks for the response. I definitely agree that the 3d technology that we have today is not yet perfect or fully developed. I really hope that they develop a better way of implementing it that will also minimize or better eliminate the undesirable effects.

Yeah, i'm sure they will find some way to perfect it since technologies getting better everyday. If it really is perfected, then everyone could enjoy the 3D effects without afraid of any kind of side effects.

I also experience headache during and after watching movies in 3D. I don't think our eye or brains are able to process this kind of strain. I truly believe people are going to see damage and after effects later in life. I went to see a 3 D movie twice and will never sudject myself to this again.

I really think that scientists should really look into this matter deeply since 3d is obviously becoming a trend nowadays. 3d movies, games, televisions, etc. If ever there are indeed long term damage later on, it's really saddening.

I think that movies and games in 3d are enjoyable. they would probably still be enjoyable without 3d but 3d can give a different dimension totaly to the experience.

I agree, in spite of the discomfort that I experience, I do still appreciate the 3d effects. However, I still prefer high definition 2d.

Not really to be honest with you. If the quality is not there and I'm just not feeling it, then a movie or game is not going to be good, no matter what dimension it is right going to be in. And somehow the fact that there might be some kind of discomfort when watching these movies honestly does not surprise me one bit whatsoever. Still, I think that recently, people have gone insane with the 3D movies, where it is quickly losing its appeal. To the point where some people are going to use the effects offered by 3D to mask the fact that the actual presentation that they are going to put out on the screen really is not all that good. So it really does not have an upside. People just have a new toy and they are rapidly wearing it out by each and every moment.

Thanks for the response. I agree, nowadays many films are being shown in 3d and obviously it's just a marketing strategy, however you are right if the quality is not there, then it's not worth it. I guess it's just really a matter of choice whether to watch a film in 2d or 3d. Anyways, in the end of the day, I prefer quality of the story of the movie over any kind of special effects. Have a nice day.

I also had a headache after watching a 2-hr movie in 3d in the cinema. But I would say watching 3d is cool. Objects in the movie would bounce off and seem close enough to touch and feel. But watching in 2d is still good and cheaper!

Thanks for the response. Yeah it is indeed nice however the discomfort that some people experience just shows that it's not for everyone or probably it's not yet that fully developed.

It's bad! Oh no! I have a 3D TV at home I have a 3D Tv which I can watch 3D movies on it using my blu ray player, I sometimes rent a few 3D movies from the DVD store and watch them at home. I have two 3D animated films and I recently watched Rio. I really love watching movies in 3D, everything seems so much more clearer and I feel like I'm actually inside the movie. You should at least try to watch one 3D film, especially an animated one because it looks better. It is a bit discomforting though having to wear the actual 3D glasses, I have to wear my normal glasses with the 3D glasses and that dented my skin on the bridge of my nose. I don't tend to get headaches but i reckon if you watch too much then you'll get headaches. I have never tried playing a Nintendo DS in 3D before. Are the long term effects really bad? I guess it's alright if you don't expose yourself too much, I just watch 3D films like once every few months but one day 3D TV will come out and that might be detrimental.

I guess the effects really varies, since they say some people can't even process 3d images nor videos. Hmm... I might try watching a 3d movie in the future however I can actually try it by putting 3d movies on my nintendo 3ds.

I haven't experienced watching 3d movies, its so expensive. I hope I could have the chance soon so I could also go through with that extra ordinary feelings, different from watching ordinary movies. As to the effect of it to ones health, I really don't have idea. Maybe you'll just have to limit yourself from watching about 1 or 2 3d movies a day.

Thanks for the response. Well that's the same reason why I haven't seen any 3d movie in the theaters. However, since I purchased a 3d gaming console, I am really worried whether these 3d effects is harmful to me. Nintendo and some experts recommend to take breaks between gaming sessions like rest every hour.

Hi Ghajani I too know a thing or two about how this effect is produced since its yesterday only when I gave my "TV & Radar Engg." paper and believe me it was a horrible one... :p There I studied about the concept of 3D and how it can be produced but I never experienced headache or any kind of pain while watching a 3D movie. The incident with you seems pretty unusual.

Oh don't say it doesn't suite you. I bet there might be some other explanation, may be stress. Cause you see, in 3D motion picture the red light signal is delayed by a very small amount of time in nanoseconds. I guess that effect might have irked your vision or may be its your 3D goggles creating some problems. Go on... try them often and you'll eventually come to know the reason.

People have been trying to push 3-D since I was in grade school, and I am now 67. It hasn't really caught on and I doubt it ever will. It is totally unnecessary. I don't know who would want to waste their hard-earned money on it.

Yeah I heard that 3d is indeed not new since it is obviously been there for a long time however only recently it has been implemented this way. I mean everything is almost going into 3d, movies, games, television shows, and even youtube videos.

I don't think it will be harmful to the general public, just special situations where people get headaches rather easily. I personally do not require the need to watch 3D films or video games, especially as having glasses are just a hassle on my face. The only 3D films I enjoy are in Disney where you sit in like the bug's life theater and air pressure etc interact with you making you feel bugs around. But aside from Disney, I don't need to watch 3D films, its just a way for a company to increase the price. Also if I were to have a 3D television for example, it must be extremely large to feel that you are immersed in the effect, if its a small television (even 50") and you sit a relatively far distance, you'll feel 3D is useless. Cheers!

I somehow agree that those 3d glasses can be a hassle however some new devices like my nintendo 3ds can provide 3d experience without the need of glasses and some newly released 3d tvs also feature glass-free 3d experience. The trick is that the screen is consist of 2 separate parts that displays the same image/video at different angles.

I never hear of it being harmful... But I know of a lot of people who dont watch 3D movies because it gives them headaches. I enjoy watching movies and 3D movies but i dont think there as great as the media makes it seem. I dont know if we should be worried about the discomfort of 3D movies and games if it just causes headaches. I dont think they would let people watch 3D if it was harmful. Beacuse now a days most movies are coming out in 3D.

Thanks for responding, well as of now there is no concrete conclusion whether 3d is harmful to its viewers or not. I guess we all have to wait for the results of ongoing and future research about it.
