Publishing ebooks

Has anybody done any research on publishing an ebook? This seems a lot easier than getting a publisher to publish your book, particularly if you're not already famous. However I don't really know where to start.

There are do-it-yourself or print-on-demand publishing solutions like CreateSpace of Amazon.com where you just need a manuscript to get published. Your book will be listed at Amazon.com, but it is not printed. Of course, buyers may opt to have the book printed--hence, print-on-demand. By the way, if you also opt not to pay for the ISBN, your share of the sales will be less. But who cares? You got yourself published and you are listed at Amazon.com.

I'm sure there are some dreadful ebooks but there are also dreadful books produced by "normal" publishers (Mills & Boon specializes in them!). I suppose it does depend on your objectives. I want to get round the "No track record so we won't let you get started" catch 22 situation (I've also been told that there's a conspiracy against me but not the details and I think it nobbles my career). I'm also very computer literate so I think I can lay out a PDF file or something in a professional way. If you want a family history for your grandchildren or something, I guess the standards are rather different.
