While bones are not toxic to cats they have ability to splinter. They can cause cuts and lacerations inside the cats mouth and stomach and the digestive system. Bones can also cause obstruction in your cats throat which can result in choking, so be careful when giving bones to your cat.

I had a puppy once that got a steak bone stuck in the roof of his mouth. It took me awhile to get it out mostly because he wouldn't let me get near him. It wasn't stuck too far into the mouth but was wedged between his teeth so he couldn't close his mouth. When he finally settled down and let me help him it wasn't hard to get out. He could have probably done it himself if he had had opposable thumbs.

Wonderful public service announcement. I don't deliberately give bones to Shakti, but now and then he decides to tear up the garbage, and he finds some. When I catch him with one, I take it away from him.

I did not know that. We have outside cats which catch birds, squirrels, etc., and never had a problem. Gee we give them chicken bones and they eat them.
Will definitely stop doing that, another great tip.

Actually the same can be said about dogs, small dogs at least. I have three dogs & all of them are small dogs. I was told not to give them any bones for the same reason. I was also told to be careful with allowing them to chew on raw hide bones as well because some small dogs have been known to choke on them.
