Avoid Spinal Fusion at All Costs

I suffer from extreme lower back pain as the result of having my lower spine fused from L3 to S1. The fusion took care of the sciatica, but pain iincreased. Now I have a carbon fiber cage, titanium rods and screws keeping my lower back from moving. I live in Montana where the weather changes often, the titanium senses those weather changes and it hurts like heck. There are alternatives to fusion, make sure you speak to at least 5 surgeons who are not related in practice and go with the recomendation that is recommended the most.

I have had back problems off and on since I was a child. X-rays show nothing wrong - so why does it hurt? I wish I knew, but I sure know that I would put off any surgery until I was no longer able to do much of anything... the good news is... I'm now close to 60... so I hope to continue to put it off. I do think your suggestion is a great one, and I live in a large enough city I might be able to find 5 surgeons in that specialty field in different practices, but I would hate to live in a smaller town with the problem...
