Do you prefer individual trips or group tours? Why?

I have been looking for travel information about Asia the last couple of days. We can't afford our trip to Asia yet, but I just wanted to look at some of the prices and things like that. On the internet I found a lot of group tours, and they are cheaper than individual trips.
When I look at the price the group tours look kind of tempting, but I really like planning my own trips and making all the decisions on my own. I like to arrange my own transportation, find hotels online and choose the ones I like the best, choose how many days I want to stay at each place etc. I just don't like the idea of a group tour where everything has been planned and organized for me. Of course it easier when someone takes care of all the practical things and in a way a group tour is more relaxing, but I still prefer individual trips.
Do you arrange own trips or do you buy a group tour when you want to visit another country? Or have you tried both? What do you prefer and why?

I prefer individual trips ... or trips with a small group of friends and/or family ... versus a group tour. I have done both, and you are right that the group tour is "easier", because all the details have been decided for you. However, I also found that some of the destinations did not interest me in the least. I still went, though, because it was a group activity and already paid for in advance with the cost of the trip. Similarly, there were things along the way that I saw and would have liked to explore more but could not as we had to stay with the group.

I understand what you mean. On a group tour you have already paid for everything in advance including the things that you aren't very interested in. It is hard to find a group where you are interested in everything and they all write on their websites that you have to pay for everything whether you want to participate in every activity or not. I would feel that it would be a waste of money to pay for everything and only participate in half of it. When I arrange my own trips I am able to make my own decisions about everything and I really like that.

I agree that it is very difficult to find a group where you are interested in everything they are going to do, and I also agree that it is a waste of money to pay for things and not do them, although I think it is kind-of wasting time and money to pay for an do things that do not interest you as well. That is why I also prefer the individual trips, because we can choose our own activities and change them as we find other things that are more interesting or arrange our schedules to fit how we feel and the changes that we have made to our agendas.

I have tried both and group travel is better for me. I want to just sit on the bus, enjoy the view and listen to all of the good stories. Individual travel brings a lot of problems if you don't understand the language, you don't know the land and you don't know where the most interesting places are.

If I don't know the country I usually read guidebooks about it and look for information online and that way I able to find the most famous or most interesting places. But the language can be a problem, that is true. It is a challenge to get around in a country where you don't speak the language and can't read the signs. One time my husband and I visited a country where we didn't speak the language. We walked around at bus station for a very long time. No one spoke English and we couldn't find the right bus no matter where we looked. Then we finally discovered that there was more than one bus station in city and we couldn't find the bus because we were at the wrong bus station.
That mistake took us hours, and that is one of the situations where it would have been a lot easier if we had chosen an organized group tour. Group tours are more relaxing and there are many problems that you don't have to solve, but I still prefer individual trips, because I love the freedom that I have when I travel on my own.

I prefer travelling on my own or with people I know, if we have about the same interests. Travelling with a group can be OK if it's well organized etc., but you might be hard put finding an organized trip where you want to do everything that's planned might be difficult.

Most of the organized group tours that I have seen also include some things that I don't find especially interesting. When you buy that kind of trip you buy the entire the trip and you have to pay for everything including the activities that you are not very interested in. Sometimes the places that I am interested in aren't included in the group trip and we only get to spend a short time there. We have more freedom when travel on our own and that is main reason why I prefer that kind of trip.

My husband and I take cruises. That way we are taken well care of on the ship. If we don't want to do an excursion(tour) we still get off the boat and do something by ourselves.
Since we just come back from a cruise over a week ago I will share what happened on our Excursion in Belize.
When you go on an excursion off the ship you are given one or two tour guides that take care of you while on your tour.
I wanted to get as many pics as possible as my baby granddaughter's father is from Belize. Our tour was supposed to start at 9:15 by the time we got on the bus it was 11:00am. Once on the bus we got our city tour on the bus. (I thought we would get off somewhere to let us buy souveniers.) By the time we got to their Zoo our two tour guides broke us up into two groups. One group had 26 the other 27.
I went with the tour guide that I felt would give me the best presentation. His name was Johnny and he was awesome!
When you decided on which tour you were taking, you could read and ask the cruise ship questions before putting your money on a tour.
But we had several people that got short tempered because they were walking to much (really??? it said WALKING)
So while I made it fun for myself and the tour guide I really feel for people in different countries trying to help you learn about their country and keep everything upbeat and there is always a few that makes the trip a little downer.
So Unless I am going to a foreign land like overseas, I tend to like to do things on my own. That way you can get up when you want and eat and do what you want to without all the frantic of having to wait for a group and listening to all the reasons that you feel that certain people should not take some tours.
Trying to keep a group together is like herding cattle for these tour guides.
They certainly earn their money!
When we got back to the snack and souvenir shop, not one person offered our tour guide (who had talked all through the tour) a drink. So after getting my husband a coke each, I went and found our tour guide and asked him if he would like something to drink. I brought him inside the shop and told him to pick out what he wanted. I think the poor guy was in shock. He looked like no one had ever offered him anything like that before. But I figure if he is taking care of us the least we can do is give in return.
When I am on vacation I don't want to spend it being on a clock. I feel maybe one day to do a tour but the rest of the time I did what I wanted when I wanted. It was a lot more leisurely which is what I wanted for a vacation.
I go on cruises to just be on the ocean its so blue and beautiful that I love just sitting on a balcony and would be happy to never reach land!

It sounds wonderful to sit on the balcony and look at the ocean I hope that I will also get the chance to go on a cruise one day.
I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour and that you had a great tour guide. It sounds like you have a very positive attitude and that you have found a good way to enjoy your trips. Some people like to complain all the time, I have met quite a few of them when I have been on group tours and that can be a little depressing when you are trying to get the best out of the trip and trying to look at things from a positive point of view.
Yes, I guess that the tour guide that you offered a drink wasn't used to that, but I would feel the same way as you in that situation and would offer my tour guide something to drink or eat. I would like to give something back the person who has helped me, answered my questions and taken good care of me.

That excursion sounds very interesting. It must be exciting to hold things in your hand that were a part of history. We don't usually get the chance to do that, because when we see those things in a museum we are not allowed to touch the things that we see, we can only watch them from a distanse. I am interested in history, too and like to visit historical places in my own country and in other countries.

First thank you for best response.
My husband and I took a cruise last year we went to Cozamel and Calica. We did a mayan ruins excursion The Tulum. Our tour guide there was just awesome and so full of knowledge. I even got him to talk to one on one and brought back more information than the guests recieved.
When we were on the bus the guide passed around some samples of things made by the Mayans that they used in their daily lives.
I was so excited to hold some of the artifacts it was awesome to know you are actually holding something of history in your hands.
After we got off the bus, he showed us how pieces of pottery were still being found on the ground. He said most people thought of it as gravel and he picked up a small piece and placed it in my hand.
I was naturally excited again and tried to share it with the other people on our tour.
Not one person took it from my hand and showed it or held it.
It was a very small piece but I took it back to the tour guide and he said I could just put it back on the ground. Have to admit that small piece wound up in my pocket and I brought it home to my son. I also got post cards there of Tulum and he took a piece of scotch tape and taped the small piece of pottery to the post card.
We both love history, and fossil hunting and that tiny piece of pottery made my day!

When I went to Egypt, I went through a company that had groups of no more than 8 for each thing. We worked with the company to plan the trip. My husband and i were one on one with a tour guide for most of the trip. Even when we had a small group, it was not overwhelming, nor did I feel that we were rushed, or dallied in one area too long. We opted in on some additional items that were planned, and they had "days at your leisure" built in for shopping or doing something off the beaten path.
We are planning a trip to Italy...just getting an idea of cost and what we need to do to save up for it. I started the account, but it currently only has $100 in it. Hoping to get some Christmas money and put my husbands "extra" paycheck (he is paid every two weeks, so two months out of the year he receives a third pay check.) into the account.
The ultimate goal is to have the money saved and set aside by this time in two years, so we can pay for the trip to travel the following summer.

Your trip to Egypt sounds interesting. It must be a different experience to travel in a small group. I think that I would prefer that if I took a group tour. The group tours that I have seen online are much bigger than 8 people and it usually says that the group tour will be cancelled if less than 20 people or 25 people sign up. It didn't say anything about the maximum, but it is going to be a pretty big group no matter what.
I hope that you will have a great trip to Italy when you have saved up the money. Italy is a beautiful country, I have lived there in the past. I would like to go back for a visit one day Have you decided which places you are going to visit in Italy?

Although I haven't really been on tours and trips of my own, I would love to. You see, recently, my Granddad fell extremely ill and so we had to cut our schedule to check him out. He recovered.
But the point is, I felt amazing having gone on an unplanned holiday (Although it was just for 3 days, but still). While returning, I had the opportunity of travelling back alone, my dad had to stay. I felt even more amazing and confident. I would love to do that again if time permits.
I think it would be hard to not plan an international trip. But yes, an unplanned one, with loads of surprises is something else . . .

I am happy to hear that your granddad recovered. I like unplanned holidays. My husband and I went on an unplanned holiday this year. We usually plan our holidays in advance, but this time we weren't planning on going away at all. We didn't have to work for 3 days and we decided to go a town called Haderslev. We found a hotel on the internet, called them and asked them if they had a free room the next day. They said yes, and we packed our bags and drove to Haderslev the next day. We didn't make any plans, we decided to just go there and decide what we wanted to do when we arrived. We had a great time, and we really enjoyed our unplanned mini-holiday.

Hi!
Whenever we make a plan to visit any place. We go alone rather than in groups. However, we prefer to take along with us another couple (among our friends) as it helps in enjoying the tour. If two couples are there I could spend my time talking to my friend and my better half could spend time talking to his wife and our children could enjoy the company of my friend's children.

Travelling with another couple is a lot of fun. My husband and I have only tried it on short trips in our own country, but it could be nice to travel to another country with some friends if we be able to agree about the destination. My husband and I generally like to do a lot of sightseeing and our friends prefer to visit a place when they can spend their entire vacation on the beach, but if we can find a place that we all want to visit it could be fun.

I am an independent traveler and all I book is my flight. Then I make my own choices of a route, places, accommodation and sights. I don't choose a group tour unless it is essential. Like I had to for Kangaroo Island in South Australia. It didn't have public transport and I wanted to see sights out of the town. I took a day trip in a group up the 90 Mile Beach in New Zealand. Again there wasn't any public transport and a four wheel drive was essential for safety reasons. In Colombia I took a day trip which was boring and dangerous. I left it and came back to the city by bus, taxi and ferry. It was one very adventurous and exciting evening. I use travel guide books to find accommodation. Good luck planning your travel plans to Asia.

I usually do the same thing. I read my guidebooks and look for information and then I make my own itinerary. That way I am able to visit exactly the places that I want. Yes, a group tour can be a good solution if there is no public transportation. Renting a car is another option, but is can be difficult to drive in foreign country, and sometimes it is better to take a group tour. There are some places where we HAVE to a take a group tour if we want to see the country, because individual trips aren't allowed for instanse in a country like Libya. There are also some places where individual trips are possible, but too dangerous because of muggings, hostage takings etc.

I perfer individual trips to group tours. There is a lot of benefit to group tours, it's safer and the guide takes you to all the important destinations in the area. Still I like the freedom of being in control of everything in my vacation. Last time I went on vacation, I went on a group tour and I felt rushed knowing that I have to meet back with the group at a certain time everytime we went to do an event.

The things that you mentioned are one of the reasons why I prefer individual trips. I like to have the freedom to make my own decisions about everything like the places that I want to visit and how long I want to stay at each place. When I travel with a group everything has already been organized for me and there is little room for spontanity. Sometimes I find a place especially beautiful or interesting and I would like to spend more time there, but when I travel with a group I have to follow the group and leave when they have decided to leave.

Hi Porcospino
Never been to a different country but there have been many offers of group travel - kind of holiday packages for groups here that do allow cheaper travel, boarding and also food. But I never prefer these. I always prefer to be a free bird. Traveling in groups is good and fun too but the only issue is the timings pre-set. I mean say if I am at a place that I would love to spend some more time, I cannot, just because I am traveling in a group and they all have set time slots... Similarly, I cannot leave a place early if I dont like it...
Also the accommodation is not that great many times forget the food. Being a free bird, gives me much more space and much more enjoyment

I can see that we agree about this topic. Freedom is very important to me when I travel. I love making my own itinerary. That gives me the chance to stay a bit longer if I really like a place, and spend the time that I want when I visit the different sights in the area. If I don't like something I can leave when I want. I also have the chance to stay at the hotels that I choose and eat at the restaurants that I choose. I have to organize my own transportation, too and that can be a bit of a challenge if I don't speak the local language, but I still think that my freedom is more important than the practical problems I experience when I travel on my own.

Hi Porcospino....
I personally prefer personal tours because I can arrange where I wanna go and what I want to eat. I don't think traveling alone will be more expensive if you traveling the way backpacker did. Eat where local people not fancy restaurant for tourist.
I think you and I now the most expensive part in vacation will be plane ticket and hotel than local transportation and eating. I think if we can find cheap flight and cheap hotel every thing will be cheaper than traveling with group.

I also prefer to plan my own trips because I have more freedom that way and I am able to do the things that I want to do and see the things that I want to see. I think that people who organize group tour are able to get some group discounts that you can't get when you travel alone and I guess that is one of the reasons why the group tour are relatively cheap, but I think you are right, as individual travellers we can also find ways to spend less money when we travel. I also use the local transportation as much as possible instead of expensive tourist buses. I love to eat the local food, not only because it is cheaper but also because that gives me the chance to eat food that I can't find in my own country.

Today I travel with my husband and it is very nice to share everything with him and talk about our experiences.

I have never traveled and I will never travel abroad. I know I can't afford of travelling somewhere. I think to travel with a group is a lot more fun and relaxing. I have ever been on school tour two three time where there were hundreds of student and I was one of them. The street were full of our bus and many yell from happy student who have holiday, was exciting and entertaining.
If I can afford of travelling to an unfamiliar country, I would choose some of my closely friends or relatives. I also travel here in Indonesia and most of travelling time is done only by myself and I was happy to travel inside my country as well.

I have never been on a school trip where there were so many students, but I have travelled with my own class (about 20 students) Unfortuneately travelling is expensive if we want to visit places far from our home. I have been able to visit other European countries, because they are quite close to my own country, but the plane ticket to Asia, Africa, Australia etc is expensive, so I need to take some extra work in order to save up enough money. Your country is one of the countries that I hope to visit one day, but it is very far from my own country and it is a long and expensive trip.

I haven't traveled out of the country before, and had only been to few places here. But if I were to travel, I don't think I'd be doing it alone. Being with someone I know on an unfamiliar place would make me a lot at ease and eventually enjoy the whole trip. And of course some group tour package are a lot nicer than individual ones :D

I think that is one of the big advantages about group tours, and I actually met one of my best friends on a group tour. On the other hand I miss the independence that I have on a individual trip, because all the decisions have already been made and I can't a stay a few days longer if I really like a place and I can't pick the hotels and the forms of transportation that I prefer.
