Majority of the foods we have in the market is freaking toxic, cancerous and not safe. Try to search about genetically modified foods and its freakign scary. Majority of fruits and veggies in the market are not even organic, then there is the GMO controversy, People instead of planting useless Bermuda grass, please, Plant your own food. I live in a condo unit and I still manage to have a vegetable garden. you can grow them in containers. if you have a backyard dont waste it.

We were told we could plant a garden, but the ground needs to be prepared. So far my SIL has never prepared a piece of ground. I don’t know anything about planting, but I remember my dad doing it when I was young… he always had a big garden. If my SIL would prepare the ground I would work the garden and harvest the food.

The market is filled with unsafe food indeed so it is always wise to plant in your own backyard in order to get real organic food. But the problem is either people are too lazy to do that or they are too busy (so that their land are rendered empty and useless), or they don't have the yard to do it and do not have the patience to plant on containers. Actually if there is a will there is a way but many people just don't have the will so they just take the risk.
As for me I also do plant ornamental plants. I have roses and lilies around my home but I also do have trees that bear fruits for me and some easy to grow veggies like tomatoes, peppers and the like. I can't remove my ornamental plants because they beautify my surrounding and their flowers relaxes my soul.

I wont mind ornamental plants but I will go for edible ornamental plants, well sunflowers can provide seeds, those seeds can be eaten toasted or can be sprouted into salad greens. Rose petals can be mixed with salad. The infamous Bouganvilla is actually a salad vegetable in some countries.

I have a small vegetable garden in my house. I also love flowers so part of it has flowers. I don´t feel that objects of beauty are useless. But last Winter I had raw lettce salad every day and this Summer I am looking forward for my tomatoes to ripen.

speaking of tomatoes, some groceries rub kerosene on their tomatoes so make them shiny, I know its sounds gross but lots of them do it.

We have a backyard, but unfortunately we can't just plant anything on it. It is managed by the strata in our complex, and if they see something out of the ordinary in your backyard, then they wouldn't clean it. Maintenance people come once a week to make sure it's clean and well groomed.
But I think small vegetable pot/garden could be manageable. Something to think about in the new year.

how about at least having a tree. container garden is very doable indeed. there are also some indoor vegetables like sprouts. Tomatoes and chilis can be grown in containers.

You should be growing more veggies now cos we cant trust the food in the market nowadays. Just read throughout this discussion and you will know what i am talking about.

Yup. My mother likes to plant a lot of vegetables in our garden. But sadly the grasshoppers and other insects come and eat some of the vegetables before we get to.

Yeah but adding more insects to the insects already in my garden? I'd rather not add in other organisms and disturb the whole food chain thing unnecessarily.
Mint oil. Hmm. I've never seen or heard of it. Is it found in gardening stores only?

lady bugs wont eat your veggies, they will eat the insects in your veggie, and they wont enter your house. Theyw ere not like ants and cockroaches.
Mint oil is found in food stores and aroma theraphy stores.

Solution againts insects.... Have some carnivorous insects in your garden, Ladybugs and praying mantis are good for those. another one would be spraying mint oil (mint oil is edible, so its safe for humans but insects hates them.

I agree with you Capt.
I am trying to start a backyard garden too.
Just need a few fences since I have dogs and cats.
I don't want my pets to plow my garden :p

My cat (RIP) loves to gnawon plants. I think you can start with a moringa and tamarind tree. Both trees produces fruits, their leaves are also edible. I know Filipinos cook Moringa, I found out it can be eaten as a raw salad if the leaves are young.
Tomato and Calamondin are Filipino nececities, anyway if you will plant tomatoes, dont use the seeds from the one you used for cooking, they could be GMO, try to find non GMO tomato seeds instead.

Our back garden is quite shady and not really suitable for a lot of vegetables but I have planted some fruit trees this year and we keep a few hens for eggs. We do have an allotment (a plot on a community garden) and grow more things there including more fruit as well as herbs and vegetables.
If space is tight, as it is for a lot of people, then the best things to grow are herbs, fruit and salad ingredients like leaf salad, tomatoes. Also things that climb like beans. These things are often the most expensive to buy so it makes sense to grow them yourself (organically) and then buy the cheaper vegetables from a farmers market or organic store if you can. Also, there is often more chemical spray on fruit than vegetables so growing your own organically makes the best use of your time and money.

I think there are plants that grows in shady environment, non everyone is sun dependent.right now I am into sprouting, I just love the fact that its a fast harvest. there could be some dandelion, amaranth,Miner's lettuce or nettle growing in your backyard, those weeds are actually edible.

hello,
Thanks for the warning. I am not aware about that I thought all the veggies in the market are real organic. We have a backyard which is full of fruits not veggies because my mom just bought it in the market. We also have Bermuda grass in front of our home. alright? I will try to convince my mom about it.

Fruits and vegetables cans till be organic but still have dangers, some organic produce are GMO, because of those evil giant corporations that makes those mutants. its really hard to trust the food we eat now.its really sad that giant evil companies are killing us.

Oh yes!I've been planning to plant in our backyard. We do have a vacant space in our compound, but it seems that the soil is not good for planting vegetables. It is also a wise idea because I don't need to go to the market just to buy vegetables.

some of the weeds in your backyard may actually be edible. there are videos in youtube that shows which of those wild plants can be eaten. there are actually some plants that were low maintenance.
