Yes, There is always a Joker in the bunch. People love to give gag gifts for Christmas. I know I get more than my share. I think some are trying to get a reaction out of me.
I have found when money is tight that people tend to give more joke gifts. I guess it allows them to put more gifts under the tree. I understand. It's not always easy to be able to pay for Christmas.
Gag gifts never bother me, however they can hurt some people. They won't say it but I have seen it in some people's eyes. People sometimes judge their worth by the gifts they receive. Yes, I know it's crazy but true. So be careful with the jokes. Christmas isn't really a joke. Give from the Heart. There will always be something you can give even if it's little.
Hmmm?? What to do with all those Jokers in my life?? I know I'll just save that old shoe and give it back to them next year. Maybe I'll wrap it in the old box within a box within a box within a box trick. Won't they be surprised??
Merry Christmas Everyone!!! No Joke!!!

lol....... many of my family members expect gag gifts. This is a day of celebration not underclothes and socks like I always got as a kid. But I do understand, some people especially in this economy, truly want something they need rather than something fun or funny. Usually there are a few serious gifts in my group. Last year, we had funny ball caps.....the kind with short hair as the cap, some in blue! Actually the recipients used them during cold weather and had a lot of fun with them. This year, my hubby is getting at his age (in his 60's) two remote controlled toy helicopters. My daughter-in-law and step grand-daughter are getting matching monkey knit caps for cold weather, but they also are getting an expensive family membership to the botanic gardens. Last year, my grandson was given an anime computer program and a leg lamp like was in the movie "A Christmas Story." I think gag gifts are fine, if they are interspersed with serious. The best part of last year was when my step gran daughter wrapped my grandson in ribbon and paper and bows....what can you expect from a five year old?? Good fun and laughs. Hope you do send that shoe back but find an original way to do it like a box with a note giving directions where to find it and lead them on a merry chase for an old shoe. Merry Christmas!!

Christmas in our family is a time of joyous celebration so gag gifts fit right in. The family has a wonderful time together. It is sad that in parts of the world it isn't fun and joyous. I hope some day you get to enjoy the season of celebration.

Yes, send them on a Merry chase. Make them work for that old shoe. Laughs are good at Christmas and anytime. I can understand that some people might think this is strange. I think that there are those in every country not just specific ones. People do have different ways of celebrating. The important part is the joy and love when we all come together.

Lost hope??? Tell ole Birdie about it. Who knows. I might give you a new idea to accomplish that which you lost hope in. I haven't lost hope. Sometimes things move like a tortoise however even slowly one can make progress given enough time. We can't be giving up just when victory is at hand. We can tap dance our way around any obstacle. The sun is shining and when it's raining that is nothing more than LIQUID SUNSHINE.

Someone's old shoe for Christmas? There was not a pair there? I think your idea of giving the gift back to them with the box within a box would be a Great idea, and then maybe get them a nicer gift as well just in case they would not take the joke well. I can remember many times being upset by the type of gift I get from someone, and wish more people could think first for sure.

Yes, shoes do come in pairs. I can only assume the other one will be my birthday gift. Yes, people who joke often think more of the laughs than people's feelings. I'm willing to bet they will be surpised when they discover that old shoe finds it's way back home to them. Yes, boxing it several times will make them work harder for their old shoe. Still, like you said, one must give nice gifts at Christmas as well.I receive lots of gag gifts, however I do not really give many except to return gift to our little jokers.

First of all,I must wish you a merry Christmas! What a fun, you got other's old shoe for Christmas. You are really a person who is generous to people .When you got it,You didn't get anger with them but put yourself in their shoes-money is tight. With the economic climate being as it is,they made the best of things,I admire them for that.

It's okay to receive a gag gift but not an old shoe
It won't be useful to you anyway. If one would want his gift to be funny he must at least buy something good or make a creative one. Something that you can display in your room or put on your office table.
Merry Christmas and hope you won't get any stuff like that again.

I can almost see how the person's reaction would be once you do that to him

most of my families idea of a gag gift is to quadruple box the gift and use two roles of masking tape or duck tape, which gets pretty annoying if your the reciepient of several of those in one year! We also have a tradition on the other side of my family which we call hobo christmas. We do not buy presents for the adults but take something from our home that we no longer want or use and wrap it. When all the guests are together there is a draw from the hat to see who picks a gift first, the next person can either steal the first persons gift or choose another gift. We have definatly gone home with some "interesting" things from our hobo christmases

My daughter has some gag gifts up her sleeve. She is making chocolate covered bacon for her brother and also giving him a roll of toilet paper. I have in the past given one or two myself...it's all in good spirits though. My one sister a long time ago made a very ugly dish in ceramics. She always just hated it. When my dad passed away I took the dish....waited a couple of years and wrapped it up for her and put it under her tree from Santa. It now is passed from person to person as a hostess gift. You have to find a different use for it each time you pass it...so it's been a soap dish...a candy dish.....a fish bowl...fun!

I like gag gifts. I have never been hurt or angry when I received a gag gift, I just laugh when I get something crazy or unexpected. I have also given gag gifts to my family especially my brother and my parents and I love to watch their expression when they open the gifts I am from a family where we joke a lot and gag gifts is one of the ways that we joke and tease eachother. The gag gift is an extra gift and I always give my family real gifts as well.

I miss my grandmother so much at this time of the year. she was the gag gift giver of our family. she was always good for a good joke or prank at christmas. i can remember my younger brother complaining one year that all he got was little presents for christmas. My grandmother pulled a fast one on him. she found the biggesst box that she could and put a ratty old sneaker and a dirty sock in it with a gotcha note attached to it. We all had a good laugh about it and my brother did not complain about his christmas gifts anymore.
