Environment can change music genre ?

Do you believe....the environment can change the genre of music that we like ?
10 years ago, I'm the biggest fan of boys band like westlife, BSB, A1 and many more, their genre are pop.
But, when I was in college, most of my friend like Metallica, Iron Maiden and other Heavy Metal Or Trash Metal.....
And then, I became very fond of metal genre beyond the pop genre.
How about you Mylotters ?
