Do you give books for presents?

Years ago we had no many options for making presents. We couldn't buy fashionable stuff or high tech gadgets. And a good book or gramophone record were a precious present. Then the era of malls and boutiques has arrived, now you can get the latest iPhone or fashion clothes. People rush to buy flashy things and it seemed to me that the books were in the past. But this year I bought a good book for a friend and she was amazed to see it. A few days later I discovered that this book was sold out! Well, maybe the books are still in vogue?

I always give and receive books as presents for birthdays and Christmas. In fact, the very first present I have given to eat of my grandchildren has been a chewable book (that´s what I call them) They are the kind of plastic books with 4 leaves that the baby can take to the tub and "read" while he´s being bathed. Then come the hard leaves books for children up to 3 years old. And so on. I take care of the font size for older readers. Maybe U could be prejudiced: I´m a writer in my native language.

I wouldn´t try to learn Spanish with one of my stories. They are the kind of stories full of hidden meanings and to understand that you would have to have a very good command of the language and of our culture. But I have a lot of fun writing them. Happy New Year!

Nothing can take the place of a good book, whether it's an ereader or a movie. If people like books, they like books. I always give books because they're always on the list for my kids and grandkids. I have a few on my wish list, too. Ours is a reading family and I'm glad of it.

I give books to my kids and grand kids all the time. My daughter says the best gift she ever got...was when she was about 6th grade...we were really short on money, so I started in August going to the library every thursday and going through the shelves of "books for sale" that they disgarded from the library and would sell them. I collected books for both my kids and at christmas..filled (yes completely filled) a box (a box I got from work that held reams of paper)with books! I wrapped it and they opened it and she was totally amazed. She couldn't stop looking at them and flipping through them all. I, at the time, was just glad I was able to get her something she liked. It wasn't until years later on our first christmas that she got married (with her new husband in the family) and we were all talking about our favorite gift we ever got. THat was when she said about this gift and said it was her best gift ever and she'll never forget it! Here a "yard sale" type of a box of books...was her favorite gift ever! Books are great.

Happy Holidays, Coffeebreak! This is one of the most amazing stories I've ever heard.
You didn't have money for expensive presents but you have made a really precious gift to your kids. And you gave them a love for reading! I wish all the best to you and your family.

Thanks fannitia...It really was something special when I heard her tell her husband that...I made her repeat it! And yeah, just to know that I did something with next to nothing that meant alot to her...that was the gift to me that I'll never forget. I was thinking about that last night and remembered last year, our first christmas with my son's new wife...and my daughter was telling her about her box of books...even better that I know that she remembers it so well..just meant alot to her to! The best to you and your family too!

I will buy books for my friends that I know like to read. I'll buy a book for someone if they change their mind a lot about things they're interested in. But then there are those few people that I know that will feel insult if you buy them a book. Funny thing is I like books, but I never get them as gifts.

I love books! Specially ones about Computer Science or Science in general. I wouldn't mind having a book as a present from someone, but I'm not sure if that applies to 95% of earth inhabitants :P
It also depends on the age of the person you're giving the book to. The number of people who like reading increases with age I believe. For example, I wouldn't get my teenager cousin a book for his birthday, but I would definitely do that for my Grandfather. He is a book collector of some sort.

Hello Good Evening. I really appreciate your gesture of presenting a good book to a friend. This type of presenting books as presents though appears to be sidelined over other things like Mobile Phones etc , there are people who still likes to have good books as their presents. This is very true like presentation of good motivational books especially to youngsters.
WISH YOU AND ALL IN YOUR FAMILY A HAPPY PROSPEROUS AND PEACEFUL NEW YEAR 2012.
With Regards

Yes, definitely! Books will always be in vogue no matter how much people download online reading material. Though this sounds optimistic and I don’t really know whether my son’s grandkids would actually ever hold a book in their hand, but to me and many others, a good book is one of the most appreciated gifts ever. I’m trying to ward off the onslaught of technology on my son; I take him often to book stores just to browse and feel the books, the school library has plenty of appropriate good reads and we make it a point to visit the annual book fair in our city where the crowd is just awesome. I truly believe that if inculcated properly in our children, books are here to stay and be appreciated forever.

I nearly always give books to my grandchildren. Bought my oldest grandaughter a set of classics this year. She's not really old enough to appreciate them right now but hopefully she will one of these days.HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Some of my most treasured gifts (and possessions in general) are books. They're wonderful. I know my 20-years-younger nephews probably wouldn't agree and would probably wonder where the "on" button is, but I think a book is a wonderful gift.

Yes, I do, but usually with something else. I try to find books that they would really enjoy, most of the time something from childhood that meant something to them. The books are used mostly since they are no longer in print and are probably paperback. Because the condition is very good- but not new, I treat it as more like a thoughtful consideration in addition to the other gift. Sometimes it's obvious they appreciate the book more. I recently found the complete set of Little House on the Prairie books for my wife. The collection was new and still in the original packaging. She loved it.

Yes there are books and then books. I think you have to be be very intune to buy the right book for the right person then your present would be a big hit..A friend of mine who is a big book reader has just bought a new electronic thing that stores books that she will get on line, I am not sure that would be the same as having the actual book.

Hi, Lilaclady! This time I had a chance to find just the right thing. I don't know what to say about these electronic readers... I like to have and old paper book in my hands but on the other hand now I wear glasses and they use smaller and smaller fonts.
I gave up reading newspapers in my bed and open them on my computer instead. But I still prefer what is for me a real book. Happy Holidays!

Well, it depends who you give - I love books myself an used to give books as presents, but for those who hate reading books, it would be the worse present ever!
