When do I start cutting my own hair?

professional hair cutting kit - cutting your own hair

One of the gifts I got this Christmas was a 'professional hair-cutting kit'. Although I'm grateful of the gift, and I understand that it could be useful for my two young kids, I ended the day thinking to myself "surely that person that gave me the kit didn't expect me to cut my own hair?!" I know that times are tough, and money is hard to come by, but I can always scrape up the $10-12 to get my haircut by a real barber every 6-8 weeks. I wouldn't want to go on that route of cutting my own hair, as I know I'll surely mess up my 'do'! And as my job involves meeting people, I know it could get embarassing. How about you? Have you cut your own hair? Have you ever attempted cutting your own hair? How did it turn out? Don't you find it difficult? Would a 'professional hair-cutting kit' be any good to you?

I have been cutting my hair for the last years, and I'm happy with the results. I'm saving lots of money as well, as I have a short fringe and it grows horribly quickly, making me have to cut it once every two weeks. I'm not using a professional hair cutting kit, but just normal scissors. Cutting your own hair can be easy or difficult depending on your haircut, but with practice anyone can do it. If you're afraid of messing up your haircut, you can try first cutting just small bits of your hair, and then trying to cut different parts and so on. Of course, if you mess up, you can go to the hair salon to get it fixed, so don't be afraid of trying

I think I would do that! I would try once, and I'll make sure the barber/salon is open, and I have money to get it 'fixed' if I mess up. Thanks!

My dad has hair clippers and he'll occasionally use them on himself. He has super short hair to begin with so he just puts on a #2 blade and trims all over. The only problem he has is doing the line on the back of his neck so he usually gets me or my mom to do it. I'm sure it's a useful thing to have around, but I would imagine that cutting your hair would be kind of hard, especially if you keep it longer and have to do some actually styling and hairdressing lol. If you keep it around, I'm sure it'll come in handy one day!

I guess that would be the easiest way to use it and still have a semblance of a haircut. To just pick a number and buzz all around. But like you said, getting that line at the back would be a tricky part, specially while holding a mirror with one hand, and the eyes watching the other mirror at the back! Phew! Really hard!

I'm not sure but it seems you may have been re-gifted, i.e. given a gift that was previously given to the person who gave it to you. I have thick wavy hair and the hairdressers even have trouble cutting it properly. It can take a while for someone not proficient enough. I have cut/trimmed my own hair when it was short and I trimmed 3 inches off the length a short while back (it's very long now). I would never attempt an all over job...how can I see the back???. A kit would be no good to me either friend.

I don't have thick wavy hair, in fact just he opposite. Thin, straight hair, and this is actually one of the reasons I don't think this would also work for me. Because if I scr*w up, it would be even harder to fix. Or balance on the other side, so much more the back! There's an idea: maybe I should just re-gift this next year! Thanks.

" Give me a head with Hair!" Like my mom before me, I Love men with long hair! Me? I am growing out my hair so the idea of cutting my own hair Never comes to mind. I agree with you . If you need a hair cut , Don't do it yourself! Leave it to the pros or a gifted amateur!

I think somewhere in me is a 'gifted amateur'! And I intend to prove that on my kids! Unfortunately, I didn't know that I was getting this kit for Christmas so we all went to the barbers on the 23rd. So it may be a few weeks before I can discover the 'gifted' person within me! Happy New Year Sarah!

I've thought about cutting my own hair, because for me it's more like $20 for a cheap place to cut a centimeter off my hair. But I worried about it being uneven, so never did it. I cut my daughter's hair once myself. It was slighly uneven, but not terrible. I learned never to try to cut my boys' hair myself under any circumstances.. but I will trim my daughter's bangs now and then when necessary. Sometimes they're slightly uneven, but it's better than paying $20 just to get her bangs trimmed!

I hope it works and their hair comes out okay. I tried clippers on my boys' before and it didn't work so well for me, but I bought a cheapo pair of clippers. I found a barber nearby who will do boys haircuts for $7 each, with tip I pay about $35 to get all 4 boys haircuts.. and I do it all at once when it's needed, I'd say every 3 months maybe.. I let it get a little long, then cut it super short so that's why I can go so long in between. My daughter and I will usually get hair cuts once a year, if that. She had one just before school started, but I'm thinking I might bring her to get another one soon. I won't be needing one for awhile, but with taxes I'm seriously debating a perm. I've wanted one for years but have been putting it off. Thankfully hubby is cheap. He just shaves his head twice a week.

With me and the kids, the cost of getting hair cuts do pile up. So, I think this 'kit' would be good to save a few dollars from their haircuts. Not mine though as I think it would really be difficult. That lesson you learned about not cutting your boy's hair is something I think I still have to face. Thanks kat!

yeah,in fact, I have never tried to cut my own hair. i think it is hard for me. I will go to the barber shop every month or every two months. It costs us a lot. Every time, it will cost me about USD4.00; I am trying to find a cheap shop.

$4?! That's actually really cheap already. That's even barely our tip to the barber or hairdresser when me and the kids go get our haircut. I wish there were shops that cheap around here. Thanks hugh123.

It is wonderful that one of the gifts that you got for Christmas was a professional hair cutting kit. Money is short and hair cuts cost loads. It will be useful for you and your two young kids. Some people are talented and can successfully cut hair. My sister is like that are cuts her kids hair very well indeed. I have tried cutting my dogs fur and I was useless even with a professional grooming kit. I am not good at cutting my little girl's fringe. I have long hair and haven't cut it for ages. I go to a barber to get my disabled son's hair cut. It costs just five pounds. I have my dog's fur cut for twenty pounds each. I have two dogs. I wouldn't wish to get a professional hair cutting kit because I am not talented at cutting hair. Good luck.

I guess it all depends if you got it or not -the talent to cut hair. Even if you have a 'professional' cutting kit, it would still come uneven if you don't really know how to. I think I would find out if I practiced on my kid's hair. But definitely not my own. Thanks.

Oh, I did tried once or is it twice... It didn't went too bad. Because, I was just trimming bits off my fringe area, as it is getting into my eyes. I mean, I do that because, trimming bits like this cost a little too much at the salon. I mean $10-$12 for a tiny trim. Definitely not worth it. It is not difficult either. My mum used to cut my younger brothers hair when they are way smaller. Like below 12, schools in my country has regulations where the hair should be nice and short above the eye brows and ears for boys. Because it save a lot of money for her, as she need to take care all 4 of us. So money like these goes into filling our small little stomach. I mean, if you do know the hair stylist or the barber very well, I guess you are comfortable with them cutting your kids hair. For people, like my mum, other than saving that bit of money, it is also safer for her to cut our hair then. I mean, she will scold and she has her ways of making my brother sit still. At the barber or salon, somehow, my brothers never listen and never sit still, so the hairdo often stray... So my mum had to do the cutting. And the type of hairdo she does is like crude cut, the soldier hair cut... Haha... I am sure you can imagine my young brothers' look when they find themselves without hair. Amusing! Anyway, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I think that's what I want to do with my kid's hairs. A military cut! If only I could do it perfectly. Maybe I could ask them to sit perfectly still and practice on them! Thanks ksherrie! And I hope that you've had a great Christmas, and a Happy New Year too!

No way, I'd ruin it. Heck I'd hesitate to cut the children's hair, much less my own, and at least with theirs I could see what I was doing.

I think so too! I'd ruin whatever 'do' I have. But maybe I would try it on the kids. Just a regular buzz all over. Who knows?! Maybe there's a career for me waiting, in hair cutting! Thanks Dawn!

I've never cut my own hair, well okay I've trimmed it. I've had my ex cut my hair before though and he's no where near a pro at it. My sister took a class in high school for cutting hair and so when I can I have her do it as she'll do it free of charge. I may also have her dye my hair next time she can, not sure about that though. I need a cut and trim now myself. The hair cutting kit? Nah wouldn't do me much good, I'd just have it in a drawer waiting for my sister to come by and use it.

I think the same. When I saw the 'professional' word on the box, I was thinking that it would need a professional to use it. And I'm sure I'm not. And I think it would really be hard to use it on my own hair. Thanks!

I messed my hair up once when I was a lot younger thinking I could do it myself and promised myself that I would never try it again. I have considered going to school to do hair so I wouldn't have to let anyone else do it..not because of the money but because I was mad they didn't do it right. I would trim my girls' hair but it wasn't a complicated cut...just a ends kind of thing. I'm thinking I wouldn't put a hair cutting kit to mush use either.

Maybe I need something like that! To mess up my hair just once so I wouldn't think twice anymore of not using that professional 'kit' on myself. I would use it on my kids, as I'm sure they can still forgive me if I mess up their hair! Thanks Jen!

If I didn't have so much hair with so much oomph to it I'd certainly feel more comfortable about trying to cut it myself, but as it stands, I wouldn't try it. Not to say I haven't trimmed it a couple of times in the past when it was becoming a mess and needed a quick fix when I didn't have the time or money to get it done professionally, but even that was a task since I have so much hair. I'd feel more comfortable letting someone else use the kit on me if I were you, and only then if I was certain they had a steady enough hand and good eyes for the job.

I think that's what I'd do. Until I find somebody with a steady hand, who I can trust with the kit, I would continue going to the barber, as I just don't trust myself to do a good job. Thanks!
