Purpose of a blog?

Please don't see me as unintelligent but this is an outright honest question, What is the purpose of a blog? I haven't spent a lot of time online and do mosly the same things online like check my e-mail and play an occasional game, so I am not that savey in certain aspects. Really what is a blog for? As well as twitter? Are they just another way of anouncing what is going on in your life or are there multiple purposes? Thanks in advance for clarifications

I will explain my purpose in blogging with two words: "share" and "enjoy".
I shared things that I know and things that happened in my life, and then I enjoyed the traffics that coming in (naturally it came from search engine results) and then enjoyed to have a conversation with the visitors in comment section as well.. 
But it's subjective, anyway - everyone may have different opinion about that.. :)

I have two blog sites and I enjoy blogging. I also monetize my blog sites and I am earning from it.

People might post blogs to announce the daily activities of that day, or they might want to vent out their anger toward certain people, a certain objects or happening. Sometimes, we wrote blog to educate other people, and in hope of other people learn from it. For me now, blogging become an earning tool. I want to make money from it.
