Hi Dassodils, Sorry to hear about your troubles. I have 3 Apple laptops and I don't install any anti-virus on them, and have never had a problem. There are not many viruses written for the Apple platform (when compared with Windows); there are even less for Linux (I have several laptops running Linux and they too are virus clean, no anti-virus used). That being said, I use Apples built in Time Machine to back up my Macs to an external hard drive. It's really easy, just buy any external hard drive that is at least 2x the size of the hard drive in your Apple, and then go into System, and set up the Time Machine. Select the external hard drive as the destination, and let it do it's thing. I usually attach the external drive about once a month to let it do the backup. One note on the hard drive, I find that the ones that are formatted for Windows are less expensive than the ones specifically formatted for a Mac. So I buy the Windows hard drives, and let the Apple re-format them to it's preferred disk scheme. It's less expensive, and it only takes a few minutes to complete, and you only need do it one time.

So do you have an Apple laptop, and are you using Boot Camp on the Apple to run Windows XP, or do you have a Windows only laptop?

apple lapis usually have built in strong antivirus.i have heard that in an apple latop you are not required to install any third party antivirus softwares. so i think there might be some other reason for your lapi being switched off suddenly. and in regards of good antivirus you should preferably opt for an original one just like "netprotector"(really cheap),or good option would be "kapsersky"(moderately costly). hope your laptop doesnt catch virus next time and wish you a happy new year in advance. have a lovely day ahead.

hey thanks for your information.it seems that netprotector is not a good option. but i would like to know whether even the original net-protector antivirus is not reliable.i had used it 6 months ago.it was good at detcting viruses which even those antivirus software installed from over internet could not detect. i am not objecting you but the important thing is one should at the end be co-fronted with the truth by the way happy new year charlestng.

Norton is one of the best. I had it and it was wonderful but it is expensive and no free software that I am aware of. I use AVG and mallware. Its free and you can get it from downloads.com good luck to you!

There are rules when dealing with data. 1. Having Backup: I have one external hard disk that contain all of my photo and data, and some data I have back up in DVD disc. 2. Make two partition in your system. Always save any data in second partition (different from operating system partition). There are 2 reason why doing this. First, virus main target is primary partition. Second, avoid loosing data because of lazy technician just doing format. You can actually import the data out of the hard disk. But most technician will only format it, because it will save their time (taking out the data will take 1 hour to 1 day depend of the amount and the condition. 3. Disable any autorun and system restore function, it might be used by the virus. 4. Do not just install any programs you got from internet, better having sandbox function 5. Install better firewall, especially if you get fast internet connection. 6. Best antivirus? better to be careful. I also rarely update. So far no problem

Yes I got a virus attack couple weeks ago. My harddisk is damaged and my xomputer won't start up. I lost everything my school work, pictures, songs everything! One simple thing you always need to do is making a back-up and always update your antivirus. I used to work with Avast, Mcafee, Norton or Avira. Why didn't you try to run in safe mode and try running the virus scan.

For me, my installer CD is a very important thing compare to my whole unit (computer) meaning, besides a copy of installers, i have made it back-upped twice to all my installers, that whenever problems later occurs, such as a virus attack, then i delete the OS only and booth up in CD with an OS installer and re-install all... there are two types of data's found in a hard drive... the PROGRAMS and the FILES programs will normally replaced or re-installed using installer and back-up installer cd's, but i make a 1,000 percent sure that my FILES are all still intact.
