before graduating from university, i usually took a part time job to make money because i want to support myself.
during that time almost all my classmates try to have a part time job, they think it is an honor to be dependent, to earn money by themself not by asking parents.
but on the other hand, when we take a job, of course our time spend on study will be much less and our study will be affected much or less.
now i really doubt is it good for us to take a part time job during the school? If you are a parent now, would you like your children to do this/

I guess it all depends on whether you are able to cope with your studies or not if you take up the part time job. While I was in university, I opted not to take up a part time job because I knew very well that I will not be able to cope with my studies well if I did that (in fact, I was already struggling a bit trying to keep up with studying and doing assignments even without a part time job! ). I know a few of my coursemates took up part time jobs; some were able to cope really well juggling between studying and working, while some others just struggled and had to quit their part time jobs after finding the going too tough to handle. So yeah, overall, there are pros and cons to the issue, and I think it's a matter of finding out which would suit our schedule.......

I agree with gerald because it really depends on your coping abilities. As a parent, I think I wouldn't mind if my child takes a part time job because it will teach my child independence, saving and money management, and the value of work. However, I also know that part-time jobs can cause severe repercussions on ones grades because jobs will eat time that's supposedly for study. So, perhaps, I'll make an agreement with my daughter that if her grades fall below this point then the part-time jobs should stop. Studies would be the priority.

hi jakeyangchao,
When I was in the university, our family experienced difficulties in finances. Because of that I decided to take a part time job to somehow help me in my schooling. I agree with you that it is difficult to study and work at the same time. I remember our instructor when he told us that we cannot do two things at the same time. That is what he said after he put something on the table and he want also to put other thing exactly on the place where the first object is placed. He said that for the second object to occupy the place, he must remove the first object. With that, he added that we must set priority. However, with my case during that time, even how much I want just to study, I cannot do because of financial problem. It was really difficult during those times because I work in the morning and study in the afternoon. Once I am inside our room I feel so sleepy because I stay late at night to study.
It is really good that if you study, you give focus on it. It is not easy to do two things at the same time. It is because you need to focus on both because both are important but due to the circumstances, you cannot. There will always be a time that you will neglect either your job or your study. What is worst is when it is your body or health that is neglected.

Hi... I think, it is a good habit.. As long as the studies aren't affected, it should work fine.. being on your own is something everyone likes... It is appreciated by friends and family... Just make sure that it does not affect your studies and grades...
Take care ... Good Luck!!!!

I think its a matter of choice and being able to manage your time. I am working part-time too and though its online, I must confess that I still have some issues between studies and work. I am half-hearted with kids working though, if they are my kids then I prefer that they do a bit part-time job to be independent. Working online is a life saving thing to learn especially now that the economy is not stable.

If the studies of my child will not be negatively affected, then I'll allow it. Not all things will be learned in school and not all graduates will become successful. Skills in successfully managing and interacting with people of different background is a must. What I can advise my child is take a part time that is related to the degree he/she is taking so that he/she can establish as early as possible the network of people and knowledge that can help him/her to be successful :)

currently i'm still a student and i have a part-time job. i started working part time since 2nd year college and at first it was difficult but it was fulfilling. i think it is not a bad idea to work part time. at least you'll also gain experience from working. it's just a matter of time management. you should manage your time well for school and work. so i think it will be fine to allow college students/children to engage in part time job. :)

It is good to take a part time job during the school if you can handle and take balance with your work and studies. And that your grades will not be seriously affected. Its a good thing for a work experience as well as you are helping for the financial aspect especially when your parents has no enough money to send you to school. Its also a way of learning how to be financially independent.

Well, I have long since finsihed my full-time education, but if you can manage it, I don't see that there's a problem with taking a part-time job. I would, as it would give me some extra cash to look after my expenses..
I have since been back to uni. on part-time courses which meant that I had a part time education with a full-time job.
I am not a parent, but if I were, I would encourage my children to do this, but would have to remind them that there is only so much they can do, and not to burn themselves out. Many students party nearly every night from what I experienced living near to a university, and I think that this can hurt their health and studies far more than a part-time job. But usually pubs and clubs don't help the situation by offering very cheep booze, but I guess they will pay in other ways. _Derek

I think it is a good idea to take up a part-time job when studying at the university. I have always taken tuition in my college and university days. Teaching is a lucrative way to earn money by doing something constructive. I would advise all students to take part-time teaching jobs as they can help us earn pocket money for ourselves.

Yes, I would still want my kids to get some part time job even when they are in school. I think that education is preparation for the real life. And education shouldn't be confined in books or the walls of the classroom. There are lessons to be learned by working. And managing time to ensure that they can keep up with studies, while working is just another lesson to be learned.

That's really tough . I, myself a college student and I've tried working part time while studying before . I was always being in a hurry, I couldn't focus on my study . It was really difficult for me to manage my time . But, I have this friend, he is my classmate . He is still working part time until now, from what I see, I think he manage to set his time perfectly .
In my opinion, I think, working part time while studying really depends on a person of how they manage their time . For them who can't handle two or more tasks at once, I think, It's best for them to stay focus at one thing .

I don't think that I will do a part time job while I am studying in a university. I just don't want to. The reasons are my capabilities in handling my studies and my job together in the same. I am doubted if I can these two jobs in the same time. I will have children in university, I would never let him working while studying in a university. I thought I would better to pass them from their uni session and help them to find a suitable job for them.

I'm also looking for a part time job. I'm in first year and would also like to be independent. If you have any online jobs, but with a flexible program.
I've tryed oDesk, freelancer and elance but it's hard to compete with skilled engineers.

It is if you really need it. Financial problems are not uncommon in a lot of students. If it helps you financially and it doesn't bother with your studies then go for it. Working while studying for the purpose of having something to do and you really don't need it would be kind of stupid. Work has the tendency to disturb our study and if becomes a disadvantage already then most probably you might wanna stop working.

If in case I have a child, I would let him/her do it if I can see that s/he can do it. And if I see the kids' passion to work and study. If my child can't then I have to stop him/her from doing it and tell him/her to just concentrate on his/her studies.
I was a working student in my school before and it has given me a lot of privileges. I have to maintain good marks as a requirement to continue with the scholarship til I graduated. And I am so glad I have finished it with good marks and at the same time I learned things while I'm working.

Hi jakey, I think I remember you saying that you are going to be an engineer. If I'm right, I don't think it's a good idea to take up a part time job as engineering studies are heavy (I'm stuck with one). I advice you to try to do stuff online during your free time, and that's what I'm doing.
As you get to know more, you will learn more and support yourself well. I just started earning but I need to invest them to make more money to go completely independent and pay my fees too, which is about $3500 a year!!!
So I'm still living off my father's money, but I hope within the next year, I'll be independent and pay my debts that I have to my father. And I would love to see my kid (The day I have one), to go independent. Nothing would make me happier.

If I have enough money to give to them like an extra money everyday even if they are still in the house and don't have any appointments. But if they like to then why not. It's much better that they'll have an experience in working before graduating so that they'll not be shocked what are the circumstances in working.
