One of my goals for 2012 is to declutter my belongings...i have started that by taking 4 garbage bags I had filled yesterday to the charity bin this morning...I also listed quite a few items to my facebook group Cassy's Craft for sale but I still have loads of stuff to get through..
I have quite a few boxes of books that I'm not going to unpack as I am going to declutter them the slow way by reading the books before I get rid of them as the majority of the books I own, I have never read - I'm starting with the quick reads, the mills & boon romances as I know I will never read them again so I am reading them & then getting rid of them either by selling or giving them away...
Other than the books, I still have loads of boxes to go through...alot have been packed in boxes for at least 4 years...I am always going through them & every time I do, I always get rid of things either by selling or giving them away.
My question to you is, how do I just be ruthless & get rid of the lot?? I need it gone but some of the stuff I just can't bear to get rid of because some have sentimental value but i haven't used them in years & know they would be better off with an owner who would use them.

I am a packrat and it´s very difficult for me to get rid of things. I have come to the realisation that there are some things I cannot do. I will NOT declutter some drawers. I have tried to do that several times, but I make several piles and afterwards, I put them all together again as I cannot dispose of any. I don´t see you giving away or selling your books. People either just throw things (books or other stuff) or they wait until they can use them. Will you read all those books? How long will that take you? Do you want to make yourself read that much? Can´t you browse them and sort some you will never read and give out right now? If you can´t do that, then accept that you will live with those boxes. I have been living with stuff that I cannot part with for years

I have managed to get rid of alot of stuff but can't part with my unread books until I have read them...i have started reading the ones I know I will never read again & have finished 3 so far & have had no problems in getting rid of them once read..you are right with the books, I will have to live with those boxes until I read them.

I thought so. A packrat, just like me. But it is SO much fun to read!

Good on you to have started even if the new hasn't even started yet!
I think I would like to have that as one of my goals (or intentions, thanks GG). There are a lot of items in my garage that I could certainly get rid of. They are in well-packed and well arrange boxes, but I just know that some of them I could really do without.
The trouble for me is that it would be hard also to sift through all the items as I'm sure most have sentimental value.
Hoarder alert!

Maybe you can just try to think of how it will be helping someone else. I have a lot of my daughter's stuff that another little girl could be using. I am not able to get rid of it (the clothing) because she is my only baby, and I'm just not ready to part with it. Even if I do get rid of the majority of it, I will still keep some of the items from when she was a newborn. Those items are the hardest for me to get rid of. If you know of someone personally who might use and appreciate the items, you can give them to them, but if not you can donate them.

Wow, your post is such an eye-opener. It is making me think of having my own decluttering too. I know I need as very badly. The house is so full of stuff I no longer use. So, yes, maybe I should not be so sentimental about certain things and start getting rid of clutter. I would suggest the same thing to you. Just forget about things that we often consider as important because practically they just lie in one corner unused and gathering dust.
