As per ESPN's compilation of top 5 midfielders of the year 2011, the following is the list: Scott Parker, Xavi, David Silva, Mario Gotze and Juan Mata. Ronaldo and Messi were not considered as they were taken into the strikers list rather than the midfielders. The surprise package is Scott Parker getting the nod ahead of other midfielders for the best defensive midfielder in the list. What is your view on this list? Do you think anyone else needed to be on this list? Cheers! Ram PS: The complete article is available at: http://www.espnstar.com/editorial/news/detail/item728382/Top-5-midfielders-of-2011/

Like I said in my previous post, I don't think that the people who made this list are following each and every game in the world, so therefore the list is not the most accurate one. It is a big surprise for me to see Scott Parker here and no Schweinsteiger, Iniesta or Ozil, three of the finest midfielders around. Maybe even Xabi Alonso would deserve to be here instead of Gotze or Juan Mata.

Probably the authors of this list decided to stick with only one player from each club. But I agree in my list Iniesta and Fabregas would definitely make it. Maybe Modric as well. Cheers! Ram

That is a mystery for me also. Xavi is there in the list, but not to include Iniesta in the top of the best midfielders is a sign of weak knowledge about football.

Yes, he is the surprise choice. But he has had a fantastic 2011 without doubt. His industry and hard-work has never been in doubt. He has been one of the key reasons why Tottenham is flying so high in the table. Cheers! Ram

Yes, Modric should have been on that list as per my ratings. I think he did miss quite a few matches at the start of this season due to his fight with Harry Redknapp. He wanted to join Chelsea and that might have cost him some credit. Cheers! Ram

I don't agree with Scott Parker and Juan Mata. I would have put Gareth Bale and Yaya Toure ahead of them.

I agree Gareth Bale deserved either to be on the list or very close to the list. But I think though the start of the year was fantastic for him, he was a bit off color at the start of the season. He is beginning to get back into his flow again now. So that might just have tipped the scales against him. Cheers! Ram

Well, I think most of them deserved in the list. Maybe Ozil and Iniesta should also include in the list since both of them have good contribution to their clubs. Not sure whether the criteria is about their contribution when attacking or defending..I think most of the top five are excellent in support to attack and giving assist to the strikers or even score goals by themselves..nice topis my friend..

Iniesta definitely deserved to be in the list. I think Ozil has been a bit shadowed by Ronaldo. And probably that has meant that he does not make the list. Cheers! Ram
