I have a bad habit of always wanting to buy my books. Even though there have been a few times I have read books from the library due to being out of print and not able to find one used. But mostly, I purchase them. Am I odd? Or would you rather purchase your books also?

I don't like to borrow books for two reasons. The first is that I wouldn't want to give it back. The second is that I always forget to return them on time and I am always leaving them out (so i remember to return it) which causes it to get lost.
I love to buy my books but I only like to buy thme used now. It is so much cheaper to buy a used book than a new one. I like getting them from Amazon.com. You can get some hardcover books for under a dollar, plus shipping which is cheap. I like to read them over and over and I like to show them off. I can't show off a borrowed book. I need a whole room just for my books and I am never going to be done my collection!
You should try www.bookcrossing.com I belong there. It is a place where you "catch" and "release" books into the "wild". You read them, comment on the in an online journal on the website then you let them go for another reader to enjoy.

These are REAL books! You look up your area on the website to see when people "release" them into the wild and you go and try to find it. Or you can request to meet up with someone to read a book that they have. I have released one book so far, at a restaurant. I am excited to see if someone actually reads it and adds it to the site.

I am completely with you AxranraRose82. I too wouldn't want to give it back, like to display them, forget to return on time, and try to protect it from 7 kids so it doesn't get lost is not easy!
I absolutely love shopping on Amazon.com.
I will have to check out the bookcrossing.com. It sounds very interesting!
When you "catch" a book...is this an e-book? Or are you looking up and giving your opinions about books you have read?

I feel the same way you do about books. I have this urge to own all the books I read and then I rarely get rid of them unless I didn't enjoy them that much or whatever may be the reason, but otherwise I horde them all. lol

That's a good way to describe me, I am a book horde. LOL
I don't even like lending my books out either because a few have not returned.

I always loved that my family had a couple bookcases full of books growing up. I too have a pretty good library of my own. For now I buy because I want my library to continue to grow. However I do take my son to the library from time to time. He enjoys it there and it is a way to teach him how a library works and how to check out books. Me, I buy, my son, he gets plenty of books bought for him and checks out library books too.

I hope to have a room filled with books one day!
And knowing that I read every single one on them!
I tell my daughter that once she gets older and starts reading books
like I read, then she will have all that she needs. From the beginning of a series to the end!
Now,of course, I have a book case full of kids books too.
I enjoy reading those really cute books to them.
Like, 'If You Give a Pig a Pancake' or 'Its Not Easy Being a Bunny'. :)

I get that! I am reading a series...and would like to own the entire collection.
Have you ever read Dean Knootz? How would you compare King and Knootz?

for me? I would have to say I buy them, for my wife there is the liberary. Now before you start yelling chauvinist, let me explian. My wife can tear thrugh a five to six hundred page book in about seven hours. We already have 2 1/2 bookshelves overflowing with books, While I haven;t read them all she has read them two, three, four, or more times apiece. We would spend our entire paycheck on books if it weren't for the liberary

Hey, in that case, I completely understand ya. I am I was not going to yell chauvinist. Everyone has their preferences. And if your wife speeds thru books like a hot knife thru butter, I see no reason for her not to get books from a library. :)
Thanks for sharing!!! That is what this is all about.

I also like to buy my books. I dont like getting it from library at all. Books I read, somehow, I have to keep it for good. My hubby always tell me no more books for while since I dont have a open space for books anymore.

I have started hiding books, like I am hiding a bottle of booze. LOL My addiction! ha ha
Anyone going to step in with a intervention?
If you putting books behind other books, then it will look like you have room. :)

I'm a library nut. I go at least once a week. We get books and rent movies. I like to read but don't always want to buy a book. If I like a book I'll go and buy it. I usually buy used or really discounted books. I try to read at least one a week.

I always prefer buying books or anything else instead of renting or borrowing. You are definitely not odd. There is nothing wrong with buying books, especially if you like it. I don't want to have to worry about returning things and getting charged late fees.

No your not odd. I prefer to buy my books too. That way you can read them in your own time not the librarys time. As it is I bought Narnia last yyear and I still havent read the whole book yet. I am glad I own it that way I don have to pay the library for the late fees.

i would buy my books rather than borrow from a library, coz i want to maintain a track of the books i read, and i also underline important quotes and words and maintain book tags too...

I would rather buy the books. Becuse then I could read the books at my own pace and if I wanted to read the book again, I could. Plus by the time I returned the book back to the library I would probably have almost as high of a fee as I would if I just bought the book.

It is an addiction...I'm telling you! LOL
I can't help it! If I see a book I am interested in, I will buy it even if I am already reading a book currently. This way I am never without something to read! Always a book in waiting to be read.

I mostly buy my books because I always forget to return them to the library til they are very late and I don't like to get the evil eye for it. I buy books from Half Price Books which is a book store near me or from half.com which is their website where you can get most books at more than half off. I can't resist the new releases at Target also.

I love to buy books, not just from stores but from auctions, and yard sales and such. The library here just doesn't have much. When i find a book i love then i have to make sure i keep it, i swear i have read some of the books i have over 20 times each, i just love to read!!! I will always buy books, and i will buy my children all the books they can read as well!!!

See, that is what my problem is. I look to see if the library has it and it is checked out AND reserved. Well, if it is reserved, that is at least another month I have to wair before they get it back for me to borrow it.

There's something special, to me, about owning a book and having it on my bookshelf, even though I know I could get it from the library anytime, and even though I know I may not ever read the book.
Sometimes if I like an author I'll buy their books in hardcover. I had a friend whose father was a big reader and his bookshelves were filled with hardcover first editions of Hemingway, John Cheever, etc., and that always seemed cool to me.

First editions are always so neat! I love tracking down really old books at used stores. Once in a while you can find something great that's also fairly inexpensive, you just need to dig :) I found a first edition of a J.M. Barrie book for $1.50 one time. Even though it's more sentimental than practical, I really enjoy finds like that.
