If you need to be away from work for the holiday, I think you should go for it. Hopefully the rest of the year you can tolerate them and work productively with them.
Every year, I take my birthday off work... and my husband's birthday, and my children's birthdays. Frankly, I don't want to be at work when I feel I should be spending time with my family on our special days.
Okay, it's not the same thing, but it's kind of similar. And if you need to be away from work on New Year's, and you ask for the day off ahead of time & it's granted, why not take the day off? Then you can celebrate the new year without having to worry about the people at work. :)
