Let us be practical. We are all feeling the negative impact of global crisis. Why waste money by buying and later on lighting up these fireworks that harm the environment, humans, and the wallet? If the rationale of fireworks is to drive away evil spirits by making a lot of noise, then this can be done by millions of other ways except wasting your money on fireworks. There are many things in the house that can create so much noise. Be creative. You can use your old pans and kettles, drums or other musical instruments, honk your cars, etc. How about you? Do you waste your money on fireworks display?

I am proud to say that I have never bought a single firework for the new year celebration. I see it as a waste of money. It also is harmful for the environment. I know that for many, they usually spend so much, they say that it is tradition and it drives away evil spirits. But somehow, I do not agree with such. We can always say our prayer to drive evil away. On the other hand, having fireworks can lead to injuries as well.

It is already a happy tradition so I don't think I will stop using fireworks every New Year. We have been doing it since I was a kid. The reason? It's fun and entertaining!
I know you are just concerned but it is only once a year! Now how about other things like watching T.V.? It uses electricity, so it affects the environment and we pay for the electricity too!
You can't replace the amazement of seeing colorful fireworks by banging pans!
Happy New Year!

I do not care for fireworks at all. They are loud and I am sure they are terrible for the environment. People make a huge deal out of them but I think they are boring. My daughter used to be so terrified of them but at 8 she likes them now. There are fireworks in town tonight for hometown days. My daughter wanted to go see them but I didnt want to go so my sister said my daughter could go with her and her kids.

I never buy fireworks, unlike my friends who rush to shops and buy loads of them. And, I always get some from them so I can light up one or two as well. It's defininitely not good for the environment but people don't go out with drums and such because it simply doesn't have the same feeling.

Hi there Cutie! As for our family, we just sleep the new year celebration over, no honking of horns, no jumping, no fireworks just zzzzzzzzleep. We dont follow the round fruits superstition either. You are right, i do find it quite wasteful...

I have stopped buying fireworks a long long time ago! I really cannot make sense of blowing thousands for just a few minutes of excitement and noise and smoke! I know some of the fireworks really look good, in fact I too enjoy looking at them, but I would never ever spend money to buy them actually! I am totally against it!

That is why we did not buy that many. Me and hubby only bought one "fountain" for midnight and then some pops for the kids..and a horn to make it noisier. I actually do not believe in superstition of driving bad luck away but then... it is also not fun without the noise hahaha we just got used to it and i know the kids love it too.. it is only once a year!

I don't spend money on fireworks, but I do go downtown and watch them on the square. I never thought about the global crisis aspect of it, but it is one thing our family really enjoys and there's 100's of thousands of people there watching the same ones so I imagine most of us are not buying and lighting them ourselves.

I hate fireworks, but it already be the tradition in New Years Eve almost every country make huge expense to buy a ton of fireworks.....People like it, to see the lighting on the sky but they are never thinking about their money spend by country for useless stuff and burn on the sky.

I'm also like you. I don't support fireworks either since I'm the type of person who likes peaceful and quiet surroundings. Last night I just slept throughout the new year and I felt annoyed because I couldn't sleep no matter how much I tried because of my neighbors.

What a coincidence! Here in our city the government also announced to cancel the fireworks show during the Chinese New Year. Since it creates the air pollution and also it costs a lot of money. I agree to it. But I wish the government could use this money in a right way.

When I was younger, I never thought about fireworks for New Year's Eve, only for the Fourth of July. I remember when I first moved to Alaska (1970) how the first New Year's Eve we lived there people would walk in the streets at midnight banging trash can lids or something like that then go back inside to warm up. It wasn't until I was teaching English in China and the foreign teachers shot of fireworks on New Year's Eve that I knew that was tradition, but it was even more common to see it on Chinese New Year a month or so later. I never really cared for fireworks when it was cold outside and everywhere I lived the winter was always cold. Oh well...

Yes I also feel such we are wasting the money if purchasing more fireworks. But some people not understand this and they spread the pollution not like to celebrate eco friendly Diwali.
