nytol and unisom are too different compounds. Are they effective? valerian and melatonin have been recommended by a native american friend. What about them? And tryptophan. I don't even know if that is sold as a product. It's the stuff in turkey. Obviously I have trouble sleeping. I took Ambien once. It was effective, but it's addictive I understand. My problem is that I can finaly fall asleep around midnight or 1 A.M., but I sleep only 5-6 hours. I used to take a daytime nap for 1-2 hours to make up for it, but now I've a full time job and can't do it. Is there anything out there that is effective for you to give you 8 hrs sleep? Thanks.

One thing I've heard psychiatrists recommend over the years, as they don't like to prescribe sleeping medications, is that people take regular strength benadryl to help them sleep. For some it does work and some it doesn't but they claimed there is no addiction risk. I have known several people who have done this to help them sleep. And for most it worked, some it didn't. But before taking anything whether over the counter, or prescribed you should consult with a doctor. I tried melatonin once, and it did Not help me sleep. Sometimes the old fashioned methods of warm bath or a warm drink are best.
