Do people still write statements by hand?

I was watching an old UK cop show yesterday and was curious to know if witnesses still write their statements by hand. Given that a lot of people can't even spell or write a good sentence to save their lives now because of the lazy way text-speak has taken over, do the Police still expect a written statement? Maybe now the witnesses are just plonked in front of a PC and told to tap away, with the spellcheck on. Does anybody know out there?

I would think they would record their statements, then maybe the computer would print it out for them to sign. Or someone else would type from the recording for them to sign. I don't think much hand written items are allowed. Just a guess on my part. It's been a long time since I went to court.

I don't think so. In the UK it's your own choice. You may write your own statement or just speak and they'll write it down or record the whole thing for you. Of course it's always easier if you can write. You don't have to go over all the mess.
