Does time really exist?

All we have is right now. You don’t have yesterday and you don’t have tomorrow. You have just the present. We plan for our futures, but our future never really comes because we never meet the future. We are always in right NOW. So as I think about the concept of time, it is really a man made concept. Like weeks, months, years, days hours seconds are all manmade concepts and we just have now. Time isn’t something that we can hold in our hand. We can’t live tomorrow and we can’t live yesterday or last year. All we can do is live right now.
So please tell me if time truly exists or is it just a concept? What are your thoughts about time.

yes , time actually exists. the present, past and future are like some periods categorise by the peoples to meet time frames. they actully wants to compare their states thats why they are counting its as future , present and past times.

If you were to be asked to identify what time is, what is it? Animal? No... Vegetable? No.. Mineral? No.. Spirit? No.. Does it have matter? No. How do you scientifically prove the existence of time? Yes, we know we age... which is a physiological change that occurs the longer we exist, but even that doesn't truly explain what time is. What is time? The earth revolves every 24 hours and we are exposed to light and dark and we call this 'time' day and night, but what exactly is time? It's a concept, so it's not anything that truly exists.. it's an idea, if you will, to explain our existence.
You might say, yes time exists, because I have a clock on the wall or a watch on my wrist.. but again.. that's a man made device to measure the passage of our existence. Mind boggling!

yes deadbeat,
without the clock peoples predicts the time in the ancient time. the examples of such palace is jantar mantar. astrologers predits the time with the shadow of the sun.

Even without a clock on the wall, people judged the time of the day by the sun or moon position So even without a clock one could tell what part of the day they were in just by looking at the sun or the moon. The concept of time may be man made, however, I think its always been there just different ways to explain it.

Hi PointlessQuestions,Another good discussion.Time is man made and exists only in this dimension. As you say,all we have is right now. It was now when you were born and it will be now when you die. The Biblical story of creation, like all others are just a myth developed when we were trying to explain how everything came about. It's okay to believe it if that's what you want but for the thinking person, not really adequate. You might want to read this article called The Myth of Time, here is the link. http://moses-ingram.quazen.com/reference/t
Blessings.

Hi Pose. I agree. Time is manmade. All we have is a linear existence of now. There is a concept that is also manmade called the ‘arrow of time’ which only goes in one direction. The concept of time is as elusive as the concept of God. I believe in God, but I don’t believe all the stories that have been handed down. Like.. I don’t believe that God formed Adam from the dirt and created Eve from Adam’s rib. I don’t think many preachers actually believe some of the stuff they teach. They sure don’t behave like it. But that’s another discussion.

As Douglas Adams said, in THHGTTG: "Time is an illusion caused by the passage of history. History is an illusion caused by the passage of time."

What you said is exactly why I feel that time is a man made concept. Things happen and we move on from it.. hours (by the clock) and days pass (by the revolving of the earth around the sun) and that is the illusion of time.

I used to wear one, but since I’ve owned a cell phone, which has the time on it, I haven’t had a watch either.

Very well put. All we can do is living in the moment. Just think about years ago when they did not keep track of the time, day, month, etc., they were stress free. They just needed to get through each day. They had no job to go to, they just needed to fend for themselves and their families each day. The more that man got the more stressful their lives became.
Wouldn't it be great if we could just live for each day and not worry about what happened in the past or worry about what the future would bring.

It sure would be nice but, somehow I don't think in this day and age that will happen.
Have a great day.

Of course, it is man made concept. We have time in relation to something. Therefore, we are moving at a specific speed in relation to something which is stationery. So if I take 10 steps to reach the bank and my maid takes 15, it is comparison. Time is a comparison factor. As of now, we only consider time based on our sun, and our earth. Robinson Crusoe considered it from the day he was marooned. :)

If it weren't for mankind, there would be no time, because no one would have thought of it. I think most people take time for granted according to the clock and according to the sun. But if you truly think about time, you can't touch it, examine it, or manipulate it in anyway... yet people think they can by setting their clocks. They believe they can drive faster to save time getting somewhere, but really nothing is actually saved.. it remains a man made concept to measure our existence.
To me, time is as mind boggling as if a tree were to fall in the forest would there be a noise if nothing were there to hear it? Since noise is perceived with the ears and vibration, if nothing were there to perceive it would there be any sound?
Time is also as illusive as the concept of God. We can't measure God, we can't capture God either.. we can't prove the existence of God, yet we who believe in God, do believe to explain our existence.

boy you are in a philosophical mood today,
time is a man made concept created to make things easier to manage things but even if we didn't have a man made concept, the fact that we age shows time does go by, things change all the time like the seasons and so on.
The Hopi is a native people who do not go by the standard concept of time, many of the elders still rely on the moon and sun to tell them the changes of days and the changing of the seasons,
I think that is where the expression came in many moons ago to reflect a long period of time.

You are right. I am philosophical for the moment. It makes me happy to focus on things like this. I love pondering things. Time is so illusive… it’s like God… we can’t see it, touch it, or manipulate it, but we see the presence of it as it passes and we look forward to it as we hope for our futures.
Physically, we age through the progression of our existence, and we have come to call that progression time. I wonder who coined the passage of our existence into the word, “time”? Something else to ponder.

To me, time is a man-made concept invented to give understanding to the 'then, now and future' of our existence. Without mankind, I think it is safe to say there would be no time as it would not have been invented. I further believe that outside of this planet and away from the influence of mankind, time really does not exist at all.

Time is really an amazing concept if you think about it deeply. I tend to get stuck in things like this for days sometimes when I am only thinking of concepts… or black holes or whatever. I think I should have been a physicist in another life…lol!

Time is defined as: the continuous passage of existence in which events pass from a state of potentiality in the future, through the present, to a state of finality in the past.
I cannot conceive of living without being able to measure time. So, to me, time truly exists.
Now, that being said, I don't mean that time is something that can be manipulated or jumped around in. So, although it would be nice to be able to go back and change something that didn't work out like we planned or to go forward to see how a decision might work out, this will never happen. However we can make use of the past by remembering how certain decisions worked out we can better choose how to make similar decisions in the future.

Yes it does, but it's not something that we can stop at will or slow down even. I wish we could because time really does go by so very fast. I think about what the bible says about time, it says that just one day is a thousand years to God, so think about that, our tomorrow is a thousand years to Him. That's hard to believe, but there it is. The one thing I do know about time is that as you get older it seems to go faster & faster so we have to grab each & every moment as it comes. Don't waste time on silly emotions such as hate, anger, jealousy, or bitterness because then you will have a future filled with nothing but regrets.

Yes, the bible speaks of time. One day is a thousand years and a thousand years is a day. We can't examine time... we can remember the past, but it's not really the same thing. I know there is a definition for time in science, but it is so mind boggling because we don't really live in time, we live in the present only. We did live in the past.. past tense.. like I was alive last year... but like all of us, I live in the present.

Excellent. As I read this I also watch Sun Tv. (tamil) Here also the speaker is highlighting about the importance of time. Every year brings new things for many le and in the same way it takes away good things from many people. Rich are made poor. Poor are made rich. That is life and that is the effect of time.
2011 saw me becoming a member of mylot. It made be active. I wish I will enjoy mylot 2012 also. Happy new year.

PointlessQuestions..I have always heard time is an illusion. I do believe it is just a method we use to comprehend the world but perhaps someday we will understand the true meaning of 'now'...
I also hear/read the same thing about space..there is no time or space and there are multiple dimensions within the same 'space'...pretty fascination stuff

Yes time really exists, if it didn't we wouldn't go forward, we wouldn't have a second, minute, or an hour. Everything would be the same. No sunrise, sunset with the passing of the time. There would be no way to judge how long a person worked if there was not time.

I know what you are saying, and your reasoning is like most everyone else’s. In space where the planets revolve, does time exist? Time is a man made concept to explain the passage of our existence. The earth revolving to show light and dark doesn’t prove time, but it is how we explain it. Hours and minutes are man made concepts also. Can you capture time? Can you prove it exists? Can you look at it under a microscope? No, because it is a concept. It is nothing tangible. We conceive time through our existence. None of us can do anything else. Time is not a person, place or thing, so how can it truly exist? It is a concept, which is used to explain our existence. Years are also man made concepts. There are still civilizations today that do not live according to time as we know it. Winterose mentioned the Hopi Indians who use the moon to judge the passage of time as they know it.

Yes, time and dates are man-made concept right.
So why worry about tomorrow and we are not even condemned to live with the past either.
Let live to the fullest each day.
Make the most of it- like other says "live like a one day millionaire" .
I wonder why people are planning too much of tomorrow when they never ever knew if tomorrow comes.
Or maybe tomorrow comes- but who knows if we still wake up the next day.
Time is there- and we can never chase it to run faster and do many things.
We can never turn the past back and make undone things done.
But- we can make the most of what we can do while we are breathing!
