Happy New Year, MyLotters!
Right now I'm in a bit of a pinch because my mother asked me to research a bunch of things because my baby brother started to vomit the watermelon he ate VERY early this morning. And one of those things I had to research is what kind of food is good to give to my 5 year old brother? I got the result that bland and soft foods are good but the next question bothered me. Is cacao okay to give to him?
When I searched the net I only got results where dogs shouldn't eat cacao because they are usually poisonous to them (google is really stupid in times of emergencies). If you can reply ASAP, that would really be a big help. Thanks in advance!

Bland and soft foods and the first thing came into your mind was Cocoa? Your idea has me laughing, you know! Maybe, a forage could help.

@sabado_dc: Next time, please read the description. Sometimes titles are just there to attract people. And by the act of not reading alone, Steve Jobs gave Bill Gates the chance to cheat him, okay? ^^
@ajagogo: He didn't have an empty stomach. We were awake the whole night because it's the 1st of January over here so we're celebrating. ^^
It turned out it was a good thing he ate the melons as it gave him "something" to throw out. Puking in an empty stomach feels worse. Melons are fruits rich in fiber. It's natural that it only upsets people's stomach as it cleanses it from toxins that should have already been thrown out. So if your stomach gets upset after you eat fruits, it only tells you that you need to throw out your garbage soon or you'll get sicker.
Happy MyLotting and Happy New Year!

Same here, got confused with your question. Your brother vomits because his young stomach cannot tolerate the coldness of the melon. Even adults can sometimes experience this. That is why it is always not advisable to eat this kind of fruit when you are empty-stomached. Maybe a soup can help to warm his stomach.

Warm broth is the best until the vomiting is under control. Chocolate in any form is not. Cocoa is not. He may be getting a stomach virus. Gatorade is another product good for children with vomiting because it restores the electrolytes in the body that are lost with vomiting or diarrhea. But avoid dairy products they seem to sour on an upset stomach and extend vomiting. Just a few things I remember about child rearing and stomach issues. Hope he feels better quick!

Thanks for the tip! It's a good thing that I told my mother not to push through with her cacao idea. And my brother is not having a stomach virus. It seems this episode is just one of the family's chronic allergies. There are times when our stomach just does what it wants without us knowing about its plan.

By the way, I noticed something in your explanation that tells me you think Cacao and Cocoa are one and the same so I'll post this:
Cacao and Cocoa means two different things, contrary to some people's belief, though both are almost similar. Cacao is the bean that came from cacao plants. Cocoa is the term used to call cacao beans after they are harvested, fermented and dried. In short, Cacao is the raw material; Cocoa is the product after undergoing a process of fermentation.
Naturally, Cacao is not sweet compared to the already flavored Cocoa. And because Cacao is natural, we can only usually get it out of our system unlike processed goods. I still have to research more on the Cacao because we usually intake Cacao to stop certain illnesses but we haven't tried it on stomach ache, thus my surprise when my mother asked me. Though just to be safe, I already advised my mother to hold the Cacao. I hope this information adds something to your knowledge. Happy MyLotting!

Well firstly I will advice you to find out whether the watermelon was fresh or not.
May be that some part of it was rotten or something.
Ok now next, Well I don't actually know the reason but i have seen in India that parents never give their children "fruits" to eat at morning or in night. They only give fruit in noon time and when i inquired about it, they said its something related to cold. I have a niece who is very naughty and thus never eats nutritious things so her mother gives her some supplementary diets which are damn nutritious, you can check for such supplements in market.

Beware of supplements which use lactose as a binder. I have to watch medicine where the pills have lactose as a binder also. One of my spray asthma medicines used lactose in it, and I found I couldn't use it either without having a reaction.

Yes, we are aware of the lactose in some supplements. And that's what my mother is so strict about. What we take mostly are those from fruits and barley, but then again we have to change some point in time because our body can get immune to it and won't have anymore the desired effect. Sometimes, we take those that came from mushrooms with cancer-preventive "features". As much as possible also, we don't take those in capsules but in liquid beverages due to my baby brother.

since your brother vomit, you must replace the minerals he vomited..you can give him a ready made oral rehydrating solution to replace the electrolytes..then just let him drink soup and eat soft foods..you better must know the cause of his vomiting to know the foods that must be avoided..cacao fruit maybe ok..as long as it won't irritate his stomach..

Thanks for replying!
Baby bro is okay now. It really is just an episode of allergy. So right now, we'll have to determine once again what foods are okay with his stomach.
I gave him cocoa (not cacao anymore) this morning as he seem to be looking at me drink mine as if he really wants it. And he turned out okay after observing him for the next four hours after he drank it.
Now he's out and eating again.

My grandmother use to say before having watermelon make sure you do not intake milk or yogurt. I hope he did not have milk and then ended up eating watermelon and even after consuming watermelon wait for some time to have any milk product.
Just for future notice.
I hope he is feeling good.

Yes you do sound like rapping. I'm like you, lactose intolerant but I do take a pill that counter acts lactose and I can eat dairy. Happy to hear your brother is feeling better, I hate when children get sick, they don't usually know how to tell all that they feel. I still don't push milk products, it is easier to avoid that remember to take the pill.

He didn't. All of us don't like milk because we're all lactose intolerant. But we;re okay if it's fresh milk that most find stinky.
He only had water. WE only had water. We're the type of people who don't drink soft drinks unless if we ate something that needs the acid to break it down. lol (I sound like rapping.)

Is the pill natural or synthetic? My mother is so careful especially on our food that sometimes I wonder whether she's gonna take the food (during grocery) or not.
I can understand her worries because even I don't want to see my siblings suffer similar or worse problems than I have. I sometimes wish there's this miracle potion that we can just drink and that'll cure it all. Sadly, the problem is in our genes so it's a bit difficult to stop asthma or allergic reactions.

Most of the time you need to worry with vomitting is dehydration, its best to keep the diet on the more bland side, maybe toast, rice, tea, small amounts of juice, staying away from dairy is usually a good thing to follow is the 'BRAT" Diet.
Broth
Rice
Apple Sauce
Toast
Hope this helps.

Allergic people are really advised against dairy. But we're okay with the very natural form of the products. It seems our body can only handle the most natural which is a bit difficult to come by. We gave him barley juice and some raspberry with apple juice separately. And a bunch of water, of course. We gave him congee with chicken (raised naturally and free ranged) and he ate a lot. After he slept he never threw up anymore. I guess he threw it using the natural way of throwing out via the comfort room in the end. But we are still giving him alkaline water and the juices for precaution.

I am sorry to reply to your post this late. But this might be helpful to somebody at some times. If the baby is vomiting a lot,Immediately give him a oral re hydration solution which can be bought from the medical shop available as small sachets. If it is not available, mix a handful of sugar and a pinch of salt to 1 liter of water and administer to the baby. This will prevent the baby from dehydration.Other than that,if he is vomiting a foods, try giving the foods little by little so that he gets adjusted to it.I don't recommend cacao nor any other chocolate.Happy mylotting.

The best thing to give to your brother if he is sick is chicken broth one sip every 15 minutes to see if he is going to keep it down to start with and then, an hour after he kept it down, give him some bread alone without anything on it, than 2 to 3 hours later let him sip a little bit of apple juice if is alright he is going to kepp it down, unless he has a fever than bring his fever down with Tylenol and he is going to feel better and keep his food down. Good luck!

i am late in responding since this is just my first day in this site. but i just want to share my knowledge based on what we are doing in our field of work.
first, if someone experience vomiting, the first thing to do is to relax the stomach. sometimes vomiting can be due to irritation due to foods taken. what you have to do is to let someone not to eat for a period of time. 30 minutes can do. since vomiting already occured, and if you let him/her eat another one can result to another episode of vomiting. so to control or prevent it to vomit again must be the first priority since consistent vomiting may result to dehydration.
after a period of nothing per orem, as what we called in no oral intake in medical field, you can have small frequent feedings. either biscuits or any foods which you think the person can tolerate, since providing bulk foods can promote irritation thus resulting to vomiting.and of course, don't forget to give water in small amount. do not let him drink large volume.
if you think he/she vomitted much, oral rehydration salts will do. sometimes, it comes in sachet preparation and 1 sachet is to be dissolved in 1 glass of water. do not let him drink the whole volume in one taking. a sip will do, but must be given in a number of times to replace the fluid loss.this can also be given to person with diarrhea to prevent dehydration and to promote hydration.
