Here's a free lesson to all those struggling to play their guitar. The trick to the answer is to with left hand to brain to right hand and the synchronizing of the three.
This is how to train all three to synchronize together.
This depends on whether you are left or right handed but lets say you are right handed. Place you left hand index finger on the 12th fret on the high E string and use your right strumming hand to pick the string in a downward and upward motion continuously, which is called alternate picking (downward and upward), then move your left hand index finger up or down one fret counting four times on each fret. Practice daily and this will build finger dexterity and synchronized coordination.
Try to build speed slowly and clearly.

Hi puppynut,
This exercise will build INDEX finger dexterity but how about the other fingers on the left hand? And after mastering this technique where does one go from here? Hope you continue to provide more tips on effective guitar technique. Thanks for sharing.

Most people think that their left hand or fret hand is the weaker hand when in fact the right or strumming hand often is. This exercise was to combat premature plucking or fingering, what we are trying to create is unison. In response to your question I use the four finger method which is the first (index) finger on the 12th, the second finger on the 13th fret, the third on the 14th and the fourth on the 15th, and using the up and down (alternate picking), repeat that fingering in that order. Hope that helps. Thanks
