I had this firecracker talk with my kids a day before new year. Here in the Philippines it has been a bit traditional to buy our own firecracker and use it on midnight of New Year... But these past few years so many are injured because of these firecrackers and mostly are children..and after new year, they have no fingers left on their hands..some are really badly injured. So i decided to have a talk to with the kids. We actually did not buy any firecrackers, except for one "fountain" and a sparkler the kids could use. But i still had that talk with the kids, i told them never to pick up any firecrackers that was lit - well lit or unlit, never pick it up. I really stressed that out since there are kids around the neighborhood playing with firecrackers ( i want to whack the kid's parents for allowing their kids to play such) call me paranoid but that talk took me more than 30 minutes lol telling them over and over again not to eat without washing their hands after handling firecrackers since it could poison them... and all my daughter said was..mama, its a bit useless because you are not even allowing us to handle a sparkler for more than 5 minutes lol!

I would suggest you make them wear at least kitchen gloves so they will be free from those poisonous powders that might stick to their hands when lighting up a sparkler. It's better to be safe than sorry We never lit any fountain or sparkler on New Year's Eve because we feel it's just a waste of money and dangerous too. We just watched the neighbors lighting up their firecrakers

good idea..but that time i didn't really have the time to look for gloves that will suit their little hands, they only have those white cloth gloves which is a bit more dangerous because it might burn easily if a spark from the sparkler will hit them.. so i didn't let them use it

Oh yeah that one's dangerous because of its material.

They need to be careful with the sparklers as well because they are very hot and do not cool off fast. I think it is okay to be paranoid about something so important.

hello jaz, what you told your kids is absolutely correct and the right thing to do.However kids are very smart and understand what they have been told to do.Its best to convey what you want once and leave them to themselves because if you keep on and on they rebel and do exactly the opposite.Once they have finished what they are doing just rremind them that they have to wash their hands and i am sure they will do it.
