It's high time that Justice Corona be impeached. From the time he was the appointed by GMA to be the Chief Justice, there was already a doubtful motive in having him. Much more when he issued the TRo of Arroyo seeking medical treatment abroad.
It's plain obvious that he is trying to return the old favor. Now, he has to answer that.

I agree with you. His appointment has always been his problem. If we let him off knowing that he is a midnight appointee, then the other midnight appointees will have a field day. We cannot sanction what is not right from the start. My only hope is that the prosecution does it in a legal way so that Corona will have no reason to stir up trouble later.

I think this will be a soap-opera trial. Most likely it will be a trial by publicity because the impeachment trial is not exactly a legal trial. It is more of a poltiical one as said by senator-judges (a lot of them are not lawyers, as one notes) - a good reason why Congress (House of Representatives) passed the articles of impeachment quite easily. Besides, it will come done on a numbers game, as the same in lower House. I cannot say that I will be be so intent in following this trial becuase I am predicting there will be stalling and ridiculous, boring but legal procedures. I guess I will sneak a peek from time to time. But for most of time, I'll stick to my work and to cable.
As for the Corona's guilt, the prosecution has the burden of proof. I am assuming Corona picked the best defense possible. Another thing to note and hope is that miscarried of justice should not happen. Hasty justice isn't a solution - two wrongs doesn't make a right. I think I have preferred a trial where there is more objectivity, less drama, less political and less emotions. I hope this trial won't get us another People Power. Methinks we proved that the process works but should not be overused. Its meaning might find itself in contempt.

You're right, and Filipinos sure love their soap operas. That might be the reason why a lot of people will be glued to the television. Sure there will be a lot of stalling and delaying, but then again, the lawyers are there and so it can be expected. It's a numbers game, and this early, most of them have shown their biases.
I think we have learned our lesson from EDSA 2 where as a result, we had GMA for president. I hope that if people think of doing people power again, they will consider what is at stake. But it's so unlikely that Corona will attract followers willing to an EDSA for him - his charisma is next only to GMA.

For me, Corona wasn't supposed to be where he is at the moment. His appointment is already questionable from the very start and that's the fact. It may be a bit too fast for majority of the congressmen to vote in favor of his impeachment but that is irrelevant. That should have been done a long time ago. It's never too late to correct a mistake no matter how long that mistake was committed.

There are 8 grounds for his impeachment which mostly refer to behavior unbecoming of a justice of the Supreme Court. The prosecutors say that he failed to report his SALN, he says that he did, but the SALNs of justices are not disclosed to the public for their safety. He is accused of favoring GMA especially in the issuance of the TRO while he says that his vote is just one among the many and he followed the law in the decisions.
I see that you are from Davao. What is the mood there regarding the impeachment? Does he have sympathizers there?

I am not actually a fan of Justice Corona but what seems to be controversial for me right now is not the impeachment issue but how it was hurriedly done with speed from a Congress that is widely known for sitting down on the most important issues. No matter how they explain their position, it leaves so much to be desired that many are of the opinion that they wanted to be in the president's favor this Christmas. Out former chief justice Serafin Cuevas has decided to be his counsel in the impeachment trial and this speaks a lot more than words can do. I am disappointed that there were more pressing issues for the welfare of the people that continued to be ignored like the RH Bill. why that it have to be politics all the time when many are living in poverty and deprivation. Will impeaching Justice Corona the answer to our economic woes or just to allow the executive branch of the country to be so powerful?

I agree that it seems that Congress that is playing politics again, over and above other priority bills. But I look at from a different perspective - making a corruption-free institution which will be the foundation of development. In my opinion, corruption has stalled the progress. Justice is an important cornerstone of economic progress and development. If this administration is perceived to be tough on corruption, then those from the lower echelon will think twice before doing any hanky-panky. It is always important to make a strong foundation so that it will not crumble under the weight of problems that we face. Even if we have an RH bill or an FOI, if we have a judiciary who continue to justify misdeeds, where will we all go for help? Just my 2 cents worth of opinion.

He should have not been CJ Corona at all if only he had the integrity and the sensitivity to public perception (delicadeza), by not acceding to his appointment by the former PGMA. Then this issue on impeachment is nonexistent.

So another set of impeachment trial/drama will soon be watched by millions of Filipinos in the coming days. I just hopes everything will be be done in an orderly manner and will be finished at all. We have seen the Erap impeachment did not go through as expected because of the overly emotional prosecutors and defendant on some trivial things like the opening of the controversial envelope which when opened was just simple document that has no real evidence that can hold to pin down the president. Looking back at all this things I hope this one would not be repeated again in this coming impeachment trial. This is the first time that the Judiciary is put on questionable position and this should be cleared once and for all. I think of all the three branches of the government this one should not be tainted with politics since they are holding what the nations is all about upholding "law of the land". This branch being tainted by political favors is not good in the eyes of the masses. This one should not be controlled by any branch Legislative and Executive so it should be cleansed so that Justice can be served in accordance with the law and not by some influential people. I think this is the real essence of the impeachment trial.
Although the legislative is the one that can hold and check this out, they should remain unbiased since we can see that Executive and Legislative are really being closed to one another. They should present their case in accordance and hopefully they have the evidence to prove or else this is just another funds wasted from government coffers.

In my own opinion, I believe that Chief Justice Corona should be impeached because he is a midnight appointee of GMA and his past records shows that he used the Supreme Court to favor GMA and rich tycoons like Lucio Tan.
